      Excellent Video clip! Sorry for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (probably on Google)? It is a smashing exclusive product for mastering guitar scales minus the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my m8 got astronomical success with it.

    Your trick ( 9:50 minute mark) really helped me! I've moved into combining the major and minor in "major key" blues jams, and your simple trick (just move three frets up and play that note's scale) sort of demystified a ton of confusing theory concepts for me!
    THANK YOU!

    • @mcluhanmedia1223
      @mcluhanmedia1223 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      00xanawolf00 That trick is really just determining the relative major from the relative minor of a key. The relative minor is always three half steps below the relative major (e.g. G, F#, F, E) and the relative major is always three half steps above the relative minor (e.g. E, F, F#, G). G is thus the relative major and E the relative minor. The relative major and minor are always in the same key and share the same notes. For example: G Major = G, A, B, C, D, E, F#, G and E Minor = E, F#, G, A, B, C, D, E. The main difference is that you start and stop on a different note.

      mcluhanmedia1223 You right Sir

    • @Stan_sprinkle
      @Stan_sprinkle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mcluhanmedia1223 I guess because I learned blues first, I learned minor pentatonic scales first, so I never had to do this translation. E blues you play E min pentatonic. No translation needed. For me, the inverse of what he’s teaching here was my discovery: that songs in, say, G major can be played with the E minor pent scale (where g is the 2nd note in the scale). I think my guitar teacher taught me this using Eric Johnson as an example - he would often switch to the relative minor pentatonic scale for each major chord in the same solo, eg, G-C-D progression, solo in Em-Am-Bm

    Reminds me of my first driving lesson. "So we're parked at the curb right now, here's the clutch, here's the gearbox, put on the blinker, start the car, slowly release the clutch while hovering over the throttle, look in the side mirror, look behind you, turn the wheels to the left, and just roll. It's not that complicated once you know where everything is!.. WTF are you doing?!! (panics and stalls)"

  • @voronOsphere
    @voronOsphere ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's the same scale, but I would just tell someone to play D Minor Pentatonic (the position they already seem to know much more than F Major Pentatonic) over D Minor Blues or D7 Major Style Blues. I would eventually explain to them, that they could use the other positions, 1st by showing them the F Major Pentatonic and revealing to them it's the exact same notes.
    My assumption is that most of your students must be less likely to be as familiar with the Minor Pentatonic Scale, compared to the Major Pentatonic Scale. Meanwhile, most of my friends don't know what the heck a Major Pentatonic Scale even is.
    Anyhow, I found this lesson very helpful and I'm now a subscriber! Thanks!

    Well done video, very calm and educational guitar teacher!
    I can offer my two cents on the '3 half-steps up' thing.
    First of all, a lot of confusion stems from the fact that some teachers call every position that plays the same by the same name while others call the pentatonic position with the root on the E string 'position 1', differentiating between major and minor.
    The latter leads to the 'minor pentatonic position 1' ( good old 3 2 2 2 3 3 tone spacing ) being the 'major pentatonic position 5' as it's the form that is the nearest to the left ( for a right-handed guitar ) of 'major's position 1'. Similarly, 'major's position 2' would be 'minor's position 3' in this system and so on.
    So the way I made sense of it all was to assume that the sensei in the video numbers all positions by the way they are played, which makes the 'major position 1' also the 'minor position 1' ( 2 3 3 2 2 2 tone spacing ). If you approach it in this manner you search for the root note on the E string and start with ( 2 3 3 2 2 2 ) - and you are now playing a major pentatonic when you climb up and down the fretboard from there.
    If you want to play minor ( which fits a broader range of music styles to begin with ) and want to start with the same shape 'position 1', you have to start 3 frets higher than you started on for major.
    In the same vein you have to move 3 frets down if you started learning the minor pentatonics before the major ones. So if you, like a lot of people, learned the ( 3 2 2 2 3 3 ) shape as your benchmark 'minor position 1', then you start the shape on the E string root note and you have a minor pentatonic scale. And if you move this shape 3 frets down, you now play a major pentatonic scale.
    So all that is being said by 'moving up 3 frets / half-steps' is that you should use ( mostly, you can do what you want!! ) the minor pentatonic for blues-y stuff and you do that by pushing every major shape 3 frets higher. So in a way, most guys here are right :)
    This does not take into account that you have to emphasize the correct root note for whatever you are playing, which basically makes the same scale play differently in both major and minor as you try to land on different notes within the shape to resolve things.
    The easiest for me was to just have a 'minor position 1' and a 'major position 1' so I could always start with the one I needed on the root note of the E string - the sequence of shapes stays the same, so you can easily find you way up and down if you know the five different shapes and how they connect. After a few months of playing around with the shapes you memorize the root notes in each shape as they are always 'in the same place' within the tone spacing.
    Get to a root note anywhere on the fret, do a ( 2 3 3 ) shape, adjust for the b string if you have to and you play in major. Take the last note as the new root.
    Do a ( 3 2 2 ) shape, adjust for the b string and you play minor. You can again take the last note as new root.
