god, now im in love. the silky sound of the grenadilla is absolutely gorgeous and the full sound of the pink ivory is chilling. i dont have the money right now, especially as just a high school student lol, but hopefully one day ill be able to get my hands on one of these
I am a big fan of the mopane headjoint. The grenadilla sounds too ‘clean’ for me. Very interesting! When buying my clarinet a few months ago, I had compared mopane and grenadilla wood and it had been the other way around. I chose grenadilla. Maybe I’ll give the flute a try someday. With the right amount of money 😅, I’ll certainly look out for wooden headjoints. They made a huge difference in sound.
A colleague of mine recently tried a Mancke wooden headjoint and loved it so much she ended up buying it. I would also be interested to see a video about trying different Lefreques!
Mopane is by far the best, the top register is fantastic, the whole 3 octaves range are totally even, and on the highest register it grows incredibly, seemlessly.
Just stumbled across this video. I did the same thing with my piccolo and opted for a new Mancke headjoint since I had an older Weissman piccolo. The body was perfect but I wasn’t happy with the headjoint. Listening to you play I’m like now I want a wood headjoint for my flute to have the options but I just bought a gold headjoint! I don’t need it right now but what fun to have the option!
Interesting! I actually got a Burkart Pro piccolo in February! I tried this piccolo with a couple of Mancke head joints and I loved the different sounds I was able to get with the head joints. Ultimately, I decided on the Burkart Clarion head because I really liked the resistance and the darker sound of grenadilla. I think two of the Mancke heads that I tried were wave style heads and I find that the wave cut doesn't really work with my playing. I tried some of Mancke's metal flute heads and I was in love. He studied with the amazing Dana Sheridan, so I really love his work. 😊

I tried a wave a few years ago from another maker and really liked it, but when it was time for me to buy one, I just found myself over blowing all of the wave heads.😊 For my taste, I didn’t like the wood heads with the riser. Interesting sound, but not for me.
I think the most wooden headjoints can make easier to display more emotion of the timbre,which will sound a little bit wet,in the sense of synesthesia,i love this “wet”!!!!
All the wooden head joints sounded great. My favorite, though and without hesitation, is the grenadilla wood. But the others were all right up there, too. An interesting comparison. Thanks for sharing with us!
My fave is 1st, 2nd is the Grenadilla wood. Also, the Myazawa flute has an amazing sound. I have a 30 yr old one in the pcm metal, with gold riser. I will not part with it, but would like to try wooden head joint!
Definitely preferred the Grenadilla. It seemed to have the most consistency but I really liked the lower register on all of them. I’m not sure if I’d favour them over silver/gold head joints though. Going to watch your gold head joint video now 😛

Hi Gina. Your review resulted in me buying the Pink Ivory headjoint. A beautiful low end timbre to the sound. Mancke recommend only playing 25 mins a day for the first six months and lightly oiling the inside with almond oil twice a week. I realised today that after 25mins of playing the 3rd octave, particularly top F#, was getting more difficult to play. Don't know whether this is the wood reacting to the warm moist air making it more difficult to play but I reckon the 25mins limit is there for a reason. Anyway thanks for a great video.
25 minutes at first because since our breath is warm the wood expands as we play, and playing it too much without allowing the wood to expand slowly could cause cracks down the line
I hope someday you could try a Filipino Handmade Flute by Mr. Candelaria. He was a student of Mr. Albert Cooper in flute making. I tried his silver headjoint and all i can say it's worldclass. Sir James Galway also tried it- the handmade flute and was amazed of the craftmanship.
After a long time I finally took out my flute and practiced again, but then the cork fell out of the head joint... Guess I won't be practicing for a while because the repair shop is closed...
Oh no! Flutes need to have the cork replaced every two years or so :( There are actually quite a few flute repair shops that you can send your flute to get fixed right now. Where are you located so I can help you!?
@@GinaLuciani every two years? I didn't know that🤔 I'm from Switzerland... On monday, many places will open up again and I hope that the repair shop does too, but as far as I know we won't start band practice until june/july.
My favorite was definitely the Cocobolo - such fluidity and sensitivity of tone! By the way - I don't quite get why some of the headjoints had a golden ring or "riser" to form the blowing edge. To me, that kind of mitigates the whole purpose of a wooden head joint. If you're going to get a wooden head joint, why not go wood all the way - why backtrack into metal a bit???
Gina Luciani I like the Mopane. Pink Ivory doesn’t like me. I like the grenadilla because they have a little slip and doesn’t stick to my lip. The Cocus is average. The sound of the Cocobolo is magnificent!!! I can’t decide!!
I just bought a mopane baroque headjoint for my Powell Sonaré flute, from Alexandre Lavoie, here, in Montréal. It was on sale for $1,200. canadian. I love it! The sound is beautiful and it is easier to play than my metal headjoint.

wood is so tricky! I love playing on them but over the years I've found that my older wooden head joint has become warped.
Oh no! I haven't heard of that happening! Just curious, what type of climate do you live in? Dry? Humid?

The mopane headjoint is less ‘agressive’ than the pink ivory one. Particularly in regard of the staccato.
I’d love to see this video but with piccolo headjoints!
Seems like with metal risers and thinning the headjoint, the goal is to make the wood headjoint sound similar to a metal headjoint.

I'm sad the headjoints are so expensive! The headjoints cost what entire flutes do. They add such a beautiful quality to the sound too...
