Oron in Akwa Ibom state is the biggest crayfish market in the Southern part of Nigeria and arguably the largest crayfish market in Nigeria. The crayfish from Oron is from fresh waters of the south. It is usually very neat and healthy for consumption. Oron market days are Sundays and Wednesdays, but the best day to shop is on Sunday. The market starts as early as 6/7am as the fishermen bring in their wares and the vendors quickly make purchases for resale.
If you hope to start crayfish business. It is quite lucrative and you can make as much as N500 to N1000 (some make more) on each custard bucket depending on your bargaining power and ability to market your products.
Imagine making N500 or N1000 on each custard in a bag containing 30 custard buckets. That is automatically N15,000 or N30,000.

Thank you for this video. For someone just starting out , someone suggested going to the market with your own bags to curtail the incident of having your bags stuffed with dirt. Is this possible?

The truth is that someone who is new can never really escape from some of these things. Even those of us who have traded for years still encounter such, but now we have suppliers who we have traded with for years, and they can't forfeit those years for something that bad.
Is not every seller that will allow you to open the bag to check and how many sellers will you check?
Aim to get big seeds, clean crayfish, and heavy bags, so even where there is much dirt, you will still have much to cover up.

Any of the crayfish is fine if you want to start, provided it is well dried.

Yes, it is. The cost of fishing and drying went up as well, you can imagine what is happening in Nigeria now but then July ending and August is usually the best time to get crayfish (from my experience).

For the crayfish, some vendors allow that but others may argue. What we do for customers sometimes is to clean at a little fee. A lot of times we are not there, but we use vendors we have done business with in the past to select the crayfish bags.
