Soldiers like these fought for freedom and liberty so that the generation after them could live in a peaceful world. We owe these men with the deepest gratitude.
Historians tell us we are now living in the longest period of world peace. Lots of little wars, but no more big wars: WW I, WW II, the Hundred Years War, the war of 5 Chinas, more.
You know what would be great: a German story. One of the proud and young German solders losing there innocence, having to watch as there nation crumbles, lose the war, and finding out the horrors that there leaders are doing... and still live to tell it. No doubt that happened in real life, at least i hope.
Try as I might, and whilst recognising the many individually brave and good Germans simply fighting for their country, I just cannot help but feel that they were ultimately part of one of the greatest expansionist evils in history. Their army had to be defeated and we should admire the sacrifices of those who lost so much bringing down the German war machine. You bomb Rotterdam, London, Glasgow and decide rationally to murder 12-20 million Russians, 6 million Jews, countless gypsies, homosexuals, priests, communists and anyone else you find who you disagree with. You seek to enslave an entire continent in your evil ways and yet somehow the story needs to be told sympathetically of those who enabled it. That is not a story I particularly care about to be honest.
There's a sample of what you described, which is a beautiful german production from an independant producer that works by crowd funding. The series is "Verstaubt sind die gesichter" (Dusty faces). It's a ten episodes lasting about twenty minutes each, with very good production for such limited budget
I just now found out that the guy is British. Wow, I was like, nooooo way ha ha I've watched Band of Brothers dozens of times and I would have never thought that "Lieutenant/Captain/Major Winters" is English.
To have worked on this series will be somthing i will treasure in my memory banks for the rest of my life, Thank you Tom Hanks for speaking with me and for honouring these men of easy company, Whats your next plan?
This series has been an important part of growing up. Thank you for your hard work in such a wonderful series of a group of heroes who fought a monstrous tyranny and forged a brotherhood
Yes! Apparently Damian was doing Shakespeare when Speilberg discovered him. The amazing thing is, I've seen the series a dozen times and I can find only one spot where he lapses into his native tongue. In Part 5 "Crossroads," when he and Tab whisper about the MG42 that's firing down the road. Tab says, "What's down that road?" Dick says, "Regimental headquarters, but that's three MILES away." Only Brits emphasize "miles" when talking about distance. OK, I've got too much time on my hands.
@@taroman7100 Ya i was gonna say in North America (i'm from Toronto) when we want to emphasize how far away something is we stress the unit of distance as well. I've never met an American who doesn't do the same
Major Winters is the greatest soldier of WW2. He lives up to the great American ideal that victory is everything. He never tolerates failure. He could have been the top General in the American army, but wanted to stay with his men. What a hero.
So does the guy from "House" and the guy from "Still Standing" and the guy who played Erin's boss in "Erin Brockovitch" Always blows me away to find out someone is British when I'm use to them without the accent.
That's the mark of a truly great actor, to be able to fake an accent so well you'd never even know their real nationality without actually knowing the actor's background.
Schwimmer , beside Damien Lewis were the key leads of this show, incredible performances from them and the rest. Historic and only the original 506 PIR men, the actual warfighters after, the 101st were better to represent them. I hail my British countrymen, the Paras and Marines as equal heroes, no movie for them yet, they don't need one. we remember them.
They should do another mini series about The Big Red One, with that title. It'd be interesting to see what they did in Africa, Italy, and all the other stuff that happened before Band of Brothers takes place.
Anybody knows what happened to Ranney? He was in group with Lipton in the mission to destroy the 4 cannons, but it seems we never saw him again after that...
To many Grandfather Pvt Orval Villiemere Canadian Army Sicily, Monte cassino italy, Normandy France, Caen France and Holland Many of times paired up with Americans like a band of brothers
The allied cemetery at Monte Cassino is the most sad and difficult I have ever been to in Europe. Every Canadian alive should make it a point to visit it since most of the soldiers buried there are Canadian. the families of the KIA were allowed to make a short sentence on each tombstone and the comments were so sad. It was a very difficult battle for all the allied units prior to the liberation of Rome.
He was a great, great man. But I would not call him the greatest soldier of WW2. He was A soldier. And we are all soldiers to a man. You should read how some of the medal of honor winners got their medals.
im sorry but whoever thinks that the Pacific tops BofB honestly needs to watch them both again. The pacific is great, but the story of Dick Winters and E-company is far more exceptionally done than the pacific.
There wasnt the comradery established by the guys in Pacific. I found the soldier played by Rami Malek was obnoxious and perverse. Besides watching our guys wasted by asians did not help when only two months later the A-bomb took care of it.
It's not the same, is it? I watched it through once. I didnt know about John Basilone. However, the bonding there and fighting asians just not the same. I felt those poor guys were thrown into a meat grinder. Several months later they used the A-bomb. Damned generals sacrificing 50,000 men for what?
@NewYorkComedian hey there... what a good idea infact:) lets hope they make a good movie about it.. really good idea I must say;) from denmark. an a true ww2 "fan"
The Big Red One (1980) is a fictitious action/comedy that lampoons the battles the 1st Infantry took part in and focuses on stupid characters who never existed. Band of Brothers and The Pacific focus on the real people who were there. Some research needs to be done and create a story about the actual men who were in the 1st Infantry division.
And women, think about all the field nurses that got burried in the rubble of the hospital they were working in to save the lifes of said men just because it got bombed.
I might differ there. My mind always goes to those who spied and were alone, tortured and killed, and whose names will never be known. I never even knew growing up that there were ANY attempts to assassinate Hitler by the Germans, let alone 43!
I know that there were opportunities to assassinate Hitler based on good intelligence by resistance groups that were actually deliberately abandoned because Hitler was doing such a good job of losing the war, they wanted him to stay.
Ben Glancy and as was mentioned in the feature film Valkyrie, if you get Hitler but not Himmler, or other top leaders, you could end up in just as bad or worse situation. it's possible Himmler may have been able to surrender earlier and therefore save lives. but Goebbels was a fanatic, he would have gone down just like Hitler, did in fact.
Of course, it's not worth the risk when Hitler already overrode his commanders and lost the war. Blitzkrieg tactics is all he knew and the Russians checkmated that tactic.
It's an American series about Americans, from one specific company's point of view. All those countries are free to make their own movies/series about soldiers from their ranks and what they went thru. I'm sure there are great stories to be told, but they're beyond the scope of this series.
David Schwimmer proved what a great actor he is. All the people who loved Ross, hated Lt/Cpt Sobel. That is the work of a great actor.
People who knew him personally said he was pretty a fun and cool guy. It shows how professional and dedicated he was as a commander.

Don't vote for the fascist.
I hope Damian Lewis appreciated the absolute giant he was privileged to portray.

13 years later, but still a good comment. I’d definitely watch a well-done series as you describe.

There is a movie out by that named; it was released in the early 80s.
@HalDanGhor I'd like to know that as well, you can often spot him the first 2 episodes, but seems to be dissapeared later on..

JB252 the Army issued Medals of honor to soldiers who massacred unarmed native Americans ( wounded knee)
BEST WWII SERIE EVER!!
You cant say that he was the greatest Soldier in the War because every soldier was great in his own Way! "There are no Heroes in the War"
No singular hero. Today the word hero is thrown about like cheap shit.
Still, there's been a movie...You couldn't make a movie like SPR in 1980...
@boebagie Yeap! He seemed to be a interesting soldier to see evolve in the movie. Just too bad he seemed to disappear...
