I would suggest that the main difference is in the vowel sound that immediately follows the consonant. In pronouncing either of these consonants, the toungue is anticipating the pronunciation of a velarized vowel which follows. No one seems to explain this process.
Yes the vowel sound directly after the consonant makes the difference very obvious. However, the consonant sounds themselves should be different in that heaviness (due to tongue positioning) as well. And that is usually the part that's harder for people to hear and produce.
Thank you loved the way you teach. Please let people know that only ض sounds like ‘Dhwaad’ the rest of the alphabets like ذ،ز،ظ are not pronounced as ‘Dh’. It’s an issue with many writing any Sūra from Quran in English like زِکر as ‘Dhikr’ which is wrong it will be ‘zikr’.
