The definition of racism: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
Coming from a mixed asian person who has been told so many times for speaking out about racism that I am attention seeking or hate black people, this comment section surprisingly made me smile a little. The argument that our stereotypes are gentler or nicer is disgusting to me because we are sometimes either fetishized or looked at as disgusting subhumans. People have actually treated me that way which is crazy to me now. With other races, it’s super racist to assume things about people. But I feel like for us, it’s so simple and not racist at all. Changing a person's skin colour can heavily affect the lore in the character and change them. @@kimclitRacism has a broader definition than that, you don't have to outright say something racist to be racist. Changing someone of any race into a different one to fit you ideologies is racist.
It's not like the characters are white, they're Asian. You can't call others hypocrites when you (I assume) think that blackwashing is okay, but whitewashing isn't. Of course, neither are okay in any circumstance(imo), but that doesn't make you any less of a hypocrite if you do think that way. Asian people still get discriminated against, it's not like they have the same privileges as white people and never get discriminated against. Racism goes both ways, racism is defined as when someone discriminates against someone for their race/skin colour, it doesn't mean discriminating against black people.
EXACTLY! It seems like some people don’t know the definition of racism, and just assume it’s only towards black people. Of course, they have a history of being discriminated against, and it’s more common for people to be racist towards black people, which is not ok, but others experience it too even if it’s not as common. (Asians for example, though sadly it’s not rare to find someone be racist towards an Asian.) Basically, racism isn’t ok no matter who you are being racist too, even if that person isn’t good themselves two wrongs don’t make a right, and one person doesn’t represent a whole race.
actually, racism is discrimination against a certain race, not color (hence why it's called *RAC* ism.) i think the correct word you're looking for is colorism i believe !

Although I love seeing people who look like me on TV/Video games, no. If Whitewashing a character is bad, then so is Black, Asian, Hispanic, etc washing. The only time I accept this is if the creator themselves change the race of their own character for example: I have an OC I like to draw a lot and she's Afro-Latina like me. I usually draw her in a skin tone similar to mine but I could whitewash her myself if I wanted to. I don't but I could because its my character.
In my opinion, as a POC, race is a very delicate topic, but I’d say changing a character’s race completely is NOT okay. Nor is a form of darkening or lightening their skin, if this character is yours and it’s for design elements of some kind, that’s up to you, but otherwise it’s not okay. Some Examples I Don’t find Racist are: - Giving characters without race or any real skin color a race for headcanon (for example, Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony FiM.) - Adding a race onto a character with a set race AS LONG AS YOU DON’T DARKEN OR LIGHTEN THEIR SKIN! - Using a character of one race as a base for a personal character of another so long as you don’t use heavy stereotypes. Examples I do find racist are: - Giving said character an entirely different race and removing their own entirely. - Darkening or Lightening a character’s skin. - Saying that a character that isn’t associated with any certain race cannot be a race (Example: “Disgust from Inside out can’t be black!” Even though technically, a headcanoned human design of her can because she has no race.) Remember that this is based off what I feel is reasonable as a person of color, and there are likely other ways to headcanon characters without being offensive.
Here’s the thing, a lot of black people don’t want to. We’d prefer to just change the color of existing characters to feed our egos or ride off nostalgia

YOU GIVE THE OTHER KID SOME CANDY FROM THE STORE INSTEAD OF STEALING FROM THE OTHER! I agree with you here.
@@Storybook5571idk you kinda sound like “oh no a character that was white is black now oh no I feel 400+ years of oppression and erasure from another group with more power than me to this day piling on top of me, the agony!” Like there is most certainly a difference between white washing and ‘black washing’ like white washing is actually done to erase a character’s racial identity and black washing is literally just fanart most of the time, like do you think that a black artist making race swapped Sherlock Holmes hates white people, no probably not. Do you think that someone drawing a white version of Miles Morales just doesn’t like black/Latino people, yes, probably, like white people already have a lot of characters, while people of color have to make our own characters most of the time to get even a little representation, like companies don’t care about black people most of the time, they care about money, I mean, I’m glad we’re getting some representation, but it doesn’t feel genuine most of the time, and then people get mad that a white character is black now, like unless if it’s a real person being race swapped to be black, what’s the issue?

The definition of racism:
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
Coming from a mixed asian person who has been told so many times for speaking out about racism that I am attention seeking or hate black people, this comment section surprisingly made me smile a little. I have been repeatedly told things like “you can’t have curly hair, you’re asian” or “it’s so messed up that you eat dog meat in your country” or even “aren’t asians supposed to be skinny? you look like you have an eating disorder” which are all direct quotes. For some people it’s the actual norm. I am not at all trying to say we have it so much harder than everyone else, this is just the part that annoys me most.

Changing a person's skin colour can heavily affect the lore in the character and change them.
(Asians for example, though sadly it’s not rare to find someone be racist towards an Asian.)
Basically, racism isn’t ok no matter who you are being racist too, even if that person isn’t good themselves two wrongs don’t make a right, and one person doesn’t represent a whole race.

EXACTLY
True
White washing exist also but nobody says shit about it . That’s crazy
The most reasonable take I’ve seen.
What??
In my opinion, as a POC, race is a very delicate topic, but I’d say changing a character’s race completely is NOT okay. Nor is a form of darkening or lightening their skin, if this character is yours and it’s for design elements of some kind, that’s up to you, but otherwise it’s not okay.
Some Examples I Don’t find Racist are:
- Giving characters without race or any real skin color a race for headcanon (for example, Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony FiM.)
- Adding a race onto a character with a set race AS LONG AS YOU DON’T DARKEN OR LIGHTEN THEIR SKIN!
- Using a character of one race as a base for a personal character of another so long as you don’t use heavy stereotypes.
Examples I do find racist are:
- Giving said character an entirely different race and removing their own entirely.
- Darkening or Lightening a character’s skin.
- Saying that a character that isn’t associated with any certain race cannot be a race (Example: “Disgust from Inside out can’t be black!” Even though technically, a headcanoned human design of her can because she has no race.)
Remember that this is based off what I feel is reasonable as a person of color, and there are likely other ways to headcanon characters without being offensive.
