  • Brian Eno asks if virtualised desires explains Fermi's paradox

    150 years ago life was short and luxuries scarce. Fast forward to today and life is long and affluent. So why are we still unfulfilled? Is it human nature to be dissatisfied with our lot in life? Do we need discontent to drive us to succeed? To innovate? Or is our dissatisfaction a form of greed encouraged by a relentlessly material culture that is not good for our own well being or the planet
    Brian Eno is a musician, record producer, visual artist, and theorist best known for his pioneering work in ambient music and contributions to rock, pop, and electronica.

    I would have done so much better in life if Brian Eno had been my father. Every time I hear him talking I hung from his lips!

    Before this, I had never pictured Brian Eno eating a twix. Now I have.

    Very good, cogent pop philosophy from the highly creative, pop musician. As an artist I love Derrida, Baudrillard, et al. and hyperreality, simulacra, etc., which is, intrinsically Eno's argument. However, his theorizing does lead us to a negative conclusion. Fin de siecle, if you will. How about positive adaptation? Then again, that's my creativity, my desire.... However, I refuse to be drawn in to misanthropy and wanton negativity....

    This is like watching a Bruce Lee film. The video and audio are completely out of sync. Did he deliver the lecture in another language then translate into English?

    Not everyone enjoys sweet things nor is everyone imbued with desire. Neither is everyone sexual. These generalisations are based on consensus reality. Choose your own reality. We're not all Brian Eno
    Thankfully!

    Why haven't we discovered aliens? they're all exploring their own virtual realities 👽🤔

    Firstly: Exploring is also a desire many of us have, so if anything "having no desires" is what would kill us.
    secondly:
    an advanced civilization hiding and enjoying their own consciousness somewhere... maybe, but it would make more sense to grow that consciousness bigger and bigger so it can enjoy more and more of it's own existence... maybe that's behind dark matter. A civilization that already finished evolving into a big super consciousness which always experiences happiness. But I don't think that's true since it would already be all around us and using all matter as fuel for it's own existence via nuclear fusion

      There's also the possibilty that the true nature of existience is something akin to nihilism, and once a civilisation discovers concrete evidence of that they cease to have any motivation or interests. We're like little children filled with wonder and curiosity and we expect aliens to be the same way - they might well be more like jaded adults who have "seen it all before" and couldn't care less as long as we stay off their lawn

    • @JuliusUnique
      @JuliusUnique 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@da-p6814 that's a fairly depressing view, I don't think it is that way. It would be stupid not to be happy and make others happy in an advanced civilisation

    • @crescentsi
      @crescentsi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean by an advanced civilisation? Are we civilised? Advanced as in progression or as in alteration? A misappropriation of regression?

    • @JuliusUnique
      @JuliusUnique 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crescentsi advanced in technology, advanced in using logic to deal with reality, advanced in education and of course I mean advanced in progression, alteration literally is used if nothing was advancing wtf, and misappropriation of regression also is another way to say "progression"
