I became homeless 2 months ago. My job cut my overtime and within a few months I couldn't maintain my bills. I'm currently couch surfing with relatives hoping to find employment that will sustain me. I'm a 56 year old widow who has continued to work but just can't earn enough to survive. Homelessness isn't just drug addicts and lazy people. If you'd told me 30 years ago that we'd be living in a time where a person working full-time couldn't afford a roof over their head I wouldn't have believed it.

I know its cruel to say, but I hope the kitty was able to see that Brian had passed. That way it can understand and grieve, and not feel like it was abandoned. I pray Brian is resting easy now . I was homeless in my car for a bit, had to leave my kids with my family until I got temporary shelter and then I was able to live in temporary shelter with my kids. People don't understand that having your kids with you enables you to get quicker placement and wonder why I didn't leave them with family. So instead of years in temporary shelter it only took six months. I've since gotten back into the workforce and have a great job and apartment and both my now adult kids have lives of their own. I was never any less of a person while homeless and neither were my kids, but yes, we were often treated as such. It's a sad commentary on our world the attitudes about homeless people. In exactly 1 month my family went from living in a 3 bedroom house with 2 vehicles to living out of our suburban. My wife went to work making 9 dollars an hour which doesn't even cover the most frugal grocery bill and gas in the truck to get her there. In a similar attempt to feel safe, warm, and cozy, people do the same thing when they blame victims and survivors of horrific crimes. They don't even realize how weak they seem and that most healthy/happy and rational people don't need to hurt others to placate themselves by pretending bad things only happen to bad people. They advocate for change, if they can...not actively try to make the world harsher and worse. It's a giant red flag and huge character flaw to want to harm and hurt another human being just so that you'll feel better while keeping your head in the sand.

I was homeless and addicted for many many years. I sincerely appreciate that Dreading is raising awareness on behalf of the homeless community. I have been verbally and physically attacked many times and even hospitalized a half dozen times over my homelessness, and the attacks mostly came from “average Joe” type people, usually not other homeless folks. Anyways, I too found myself homeless again recently, about 4 years ago, after finally getting sober, 5 years clean now, and I again found myself in numerous violent self defense situations. Being in a “working while homeless” situation was probably the hardest period of my life. I have since saved enough to put a roof over my head and I am extremely grateful for that and for my job. Again my gratitude extends* to Dreading for raising awareness and for covering this case. Alohas everyone and have a blessed day.

That sucks dude, I always try to help out the homeless where I live, I don't have much myself but I will give what I can even if its a few dollars or buy a coffee for or give them smokes if I can. In a wealthy country like mine there should not be any homeless but 9 years of a heartless conservatives (the LNP) that cut funding to homeless programs and didn't inject any money into social housing programs (only money for their rich mates to be had) has lead to even a working class homeless as in people living in cars or wherever that working. I hope you do well and the future is brighter, I understand a bit as I was couch surfing in my younger years for a bit and slept in the bush-land because of domestic violence at home from a abusive POS father.

I’m ashamed to say that even as a firefighter I’ve been horrified at some of the things I hear people in fire/EMS say, who should absolutely be held to a higher standard of dignity and respect for human life.
They don’t always say it to someone’s face, but even learning behind the scenes that someone detests another human being for being homeless or addicted makes me immediately not trust them.
Knocks them down several notches for me. You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat people that have no power/status in society. Be kind, folks. Simple Kindness can keep someone off the edge for one more day.

Gives away everything we give him, to others that he perceives are more needy. And he was kicked off of his psych medication assistance after missing an appointment 1 time. This country has absolutely no idea how to provide compassionate care for people who need it. Cutthroat capitalistic ideals are in our DNA. Cory and Dalton are no different from those that make it impossible for homeless people to find warmth, food, or shelter in a doorway. Their actions are just more direct. A friend of mine once told me that instead of giving money to the homeless, she makes gift bags that contain high protein nonperishable foods, towels/wash cloths, detergent, water, socks, hand sanitizer, menstrual pads (no tampons bc if they're low on supplies, they're less likely to remove the tampons and could die from toxic shock syndrome), toothbrush/toothpaste, soap, and a few other items that could help improve their quality of life. She keeps the bags in the back of her car, and when she sees a homeless person asking for money, she offers them the bag. Most of the time they'll take it because they truly did just need money for food/toiletries/clothes, and now you can trust that they wont use your money for drugs, etc. I now also carry bags in my car, and always have at least one that also contains extra necessities for a child (SOCKS!!, underwear, extra blanket, etc.)

I can’t put into words how much I appreciate the way you approached this video. For most of my life one of my parents was homeless because they struggled with mental health issues, disability and substance abuse. They actually suffered an attack that left them with a brain injury while homeless that they never fully seemed to remember or understand. People fail to realize that the homeless have families and loved ones who worry about them. Go to sleep hoping they are warm and dry. We once had a normal life and were what most would consider a normal family. My parents problem wasn’t working or having a job. It was all the other things that came along with life that was hard for them and leading them to that life.
Thank you for humanizing the homeless because so many forget that they are just one bad day away from losing everything too.

All it takes is a string of unfortunate events. I’ve found that homeless people are the most giving people on earth because they know what it’s like to desperately need something. Thank you for covering this.
EDIT: thanks for all the well wishes! Thank you, I should have mentioned that I since have pulled out of that rut and am in the place of my life, but again I appreciate it. To the rest of you, hang in there, you can do it too!

I was homeless for 8 years till my city set me up with housing... Your ability to see the homeless without the veil of stigma and prejudice is a rare and very appreciated. The amount of times whenever I was homeless (I didn't "look homeless") that I'd see people tormenting the homeless and introduced myself as one of those who didn't have a place to go... would either be a good opening to explain the way social services and mental health systems had failed most of my comrades.... Or it'd be a good opening for those people to get embarrassed or invite me to their places (I'd say naw show them pictures of my cliffside setup, gravity shower and invite them to come hangout if they wanted.)
If they were rude I'd just ignore them and usually help whoever was being tormented ignore them too.

Even making it out of homelessness (a privilege not lots of people have) people don't commend you despite it being the hardest thing I've had to do. I dont talk about it much but any person I talked to assumed I was a prostitute, didn't talk to anyone else. It does something to your soul and self esteem that can never be repaired to be considered no better than trash on the street and only worth kindness if you give something in return. She hadn't done anything to provoke him, she was literally just SITTING there in front of his gallery. That's it, just sitting there! He did this during the really bad winter storms here in the Bay area too, and so she ended up in the hospital with severe hypothermia.
And yet, when someone reposted the story on Reddit, 99% of comments were filled with other men applauding the guy, calling him a hero, saying HE'S the true victim, etc. Anyone voicing support for the homeless victim got downvoted into oblivion.

I remember once when I was in high school I was catching a later train home than usual, there was this homeless man who used to sit in the station that we'd all walk past everyday, but without all my schoolmates surrounding me it didn't feel right just ignoring him when he asked for change. I told him that I genuinely didn't have any cash on me and apologised, which he was so kind about and said I had nothing to apologise for. I know it was kind of dangerous but I sat decently far enough away and there were other people around so I just, talked to him, about his day, what he does. In hindsight I know he was probably not telling me a bunch of stuff cause I was a kid and he didn't want to make me sad, and he never asked me questions that would make me feel unsafe (personal info ect), just about my hobbies and the puffle keychain I had on my bag lol. Eventually my train came and I said goodbye and he thanked me for talking to him. I spent the next few years always smiling and waving at him as I walked past with my friends until I stopped taking the train to and from school, and he's not there anymore when ever I've been in there so I really have no idea what happened to him but I hope he's okay. I don't think any single conversation has had such an impact on my life and how I think about things, I come from a very privilaged life so the distance was huge, and I grew up in the early 2000s where the villianisation of drug users was huge and homeless might have well been a synonym for 'druggie', but just sitting and talking to him showed me these were just people. Not every person who's homeless is because o drug use or uses drugs, And so what if they use any money I give them for drugs? So what if they're in the situation they're in for drugs? It sucks but these are people living in such tough situations wanting some relief and it's not my place to infantilise them and their choices of how they do so.
Idk man, I get that you end up looking when you see someone on the street, but please smile at them when you do, it's small but it shows them that you see them as a person and they really don't get that enough I think. Also money. Give them money. Legit always carry some cash with me now just in case.
This all probably sounds very naive and silly, I don't even know why I'm talking about this here, I never really do as I don't want to reduce this guys impact to white privileged girl inspo and it's not even super related to this video, I think maybe I just want to put it somewhere even if if it's just in the comments of a true crime video.

I had a great job, house, wife, 2 cars. Hurt my back at work. Was on long term disability. Over a year getting better. My wife wanted more $ than what disability was paying. For better or worse my ass. She slept with the neighbor. I left the house, had all my belongings in my car. Disability ran out. Couldn't pay the car note. It got repo'd with ALL I owned. House in foreclosure. Lost everything. She even took the 20k settlement for my injury to pay off her car before she cheated. It wasn't enough to break my heart, she wanted blood. Was homeless for 5+ years. Slept outside all year round. Almost killed several times. Chicago is NOT friendly towards homeless. There were hammer attacks, acid thrown, kidnapping, torture, and other unspeakable things. Most look at you like scum. I had a bad streak of events lead to it. Not by choice or laziness or drugs. It's sick that we put moral value on the ability to remain housed. Especially as times become harsher and people struggle more than ever. Most are just a few tragic events or bad choices away from living on the streets and the moment you cross that line, suddenly you have no value to society. Most won't blow your brains out while you sleep like these cowards, but so many of us are perfectly okay with demonizing and degrading homeless people as if they are not real human beings

This doctor would let me give my report, and then wait FOR EVER to respond. He was well known for this and even though I knew to expect it, it was still a very uncomfortable silence, longer than it should typically take for a doctor to respond back with some orders. Some of the friends I’ve made while walking in the downtown part of my city are homeless, and seeing how they are treated like nothing is so heartbreaking. Nobody should be treated like dirt just because they don’t have a house or place to live. It always bothers me how when I’m out with friends some of them will try and ignore or avoid looking at the homeless people, as if they are a burden. The hostile architecture is also so sad. They would rather force homeless people away from the areas than actually help them. Such hateful hearts these people have. Oh how I hope Brian is at peace and i hope he and his little street kitty will reunite in the after life someday too. Such a horrible horrible thing.

People said how they wanted to be homeless and are dangerous. Very rarely have a met a homeless person who wouldn’t do whatever they could to help another. When they are it’s due to mental illness and obviously need resources. The hatred these people had over people they didn’t know or interact with shocked me. There's a hunting area here in a patch of woods that's around 50 acres big and surrounded by homes on all sides, and the police station is only about 2 miles from there, and there is a somewhat large public park right on the edge of the area. Like i said though, I'm just talking about my area of the south in the mountains where a gunshot will echo and bounce off the hills for miles. It's the kind of area where you can go from a decent mid-city sized downtown to absolute rurality two miles down the road. After escaping from a violent and abusive ex, I moved to a town far away where I didn’t know anyone, and ended up homeless for a time, living in my car. My parents had long since abandoned me, and didn’t care.
The only person who was kind to me during that horrible time was a formerly homeless man named Bill, who had gotten sober and worked his way up to a job and a small apartment. He had virtually no money, and very little food, but he allowed me to stay with him for free, and made sure I wasn’t going completely hungry. When nobody else cared if I lived or died, he helped me so much.
Bill and I are family now. We may not be related, but he has been kinder and more caring than any of my biological grandparents ever were. I got a job and moved into my own apartment nearby. Now, as he’s getting older, I’m the one making sure he’s well cared for. I will be there for him, always. Thank you so much, Bill. I don’t know what I would have done without you.
If you’re reading this, just know that everyone has a story. And nobody chooses to be homeless. The simplest forms of kindness can change people’s lives, while cruelty only makes the world a more
    miserable place.

@@robinsmith4158 In my own experience, unless it’s an obviously disabled person (like they’re missing a leg), the people who usually need money and food and help the most are the ones who _don’t_ panhandle, or only do so when they have no choice.
Sickeningly, there’s a disgusting amount of people out there who aren’t actually homeless or disabled who panhandle under the guise of being desperate. There used to be one guy in town who went around in a wheelchair with a blanket over his perfectly fine legs. We all hated him.
My advice is to offer assistance to those who aren’t asking. If you see someone who’s clearly homeless and you’re on your way to the store, buy them a sandwich and a bottle of water. Hell, buy them a pair of socks. A clean t-shirt. When people have the necessities they need to survive, they can spend what money they are able to get on things like applying for a driver’s license, or paying an outstanding court fee.

When the detective asks who Dalton was with and he says "Cory Fitzwater". The detective then asks "family or friend?: To which Dalton replies "Yep, family friend". I don't know why that part always just makes me fucking burst out laughing.

Your video about the astronaut, Lisa Nowak, was recommended to me and after watching it I’ve now binged through almost all of your videos! Keep up the good work!

There really arent words for the feeling of surviving without stability; neither a place to lay your head, nor enough food.
    This changes you forever.
No child ever said they wanted to be homeless when they grew up.

"We're cut country, so we didn't pay attention to it."
I was in Whitney Tx when i heard 3 gunshots. It was out of city limits, and at 1am. I called the police just to make a record. I'm "cut country". I don't ignore gunshots.

It's absolutely sickening the way he acts like Brian just had zero value. He felt zero remorse.

I absolutely hate "anti-homeless architecture. Putting spikes on walls and middle railings on benches helps nobody. If you want to help the homeless, put money into affordable housing.

Couldn’t agree more, it’s inhumane and promotes the hate and criminalisation of poverty and homelessness.

Daltons is one of the funniest interrogations. Dumb as a bag of rocks and seems to think he's playing "20 questions" with the cops and they're trying to help him. 'Duhhhh am I getting warmer' is the vibe i get the whole time

I got the same vibe. It’s like he thinks that he’s part of the investigation team and he won’t be in any trouble whatsoever.

Dreading's approach, voice tone, pace & volume really excentuate the true story. I can't put my finger on it but he sounds so familiar and very sure & descriptive. Props. Love your entertainment, brotha!
