    I've been watching your channel for a couple of years now. I started because I wanted information on portable mills (one of which I have since purchased) but I find that more and more I am enjoying a way of life that I never really knew existed or forgotten. I grew up in upstate New York on a couple hundred acres but as kids we were all told that our best destiny was in the city, programming computers or something like that. I spent 30 years in school and/or chasing money and jobs up and down the east coast. It has taken more years than I care to admit for me to re/discover a more fulfilling way of life.
    I haven't fired my poor old Marlin in decades. Sigh.
    Thanks again for being a decent guy, raising a solid family and reminding people, especially those of us who have lost something in the distractions of modern life, that there are more important things than smart phones and Netflix. It has taken me a long time to remember who I am and your example is a candle in the darkness.

    I bought a cabin in East Tennessee and starting about four years ago, each Christmas we’ve had trouble finding nice trees, I paid $300 last year for a 12 footer. It’s getting so crazy, I’ve been planting three trees each spring, hopefully on 5-7 more years I’ll never have to buy one again.

    As a retired firefighter I say well done cleaning your chimney. It is one of the easy thing to do to prevent your house from going up in flames. To my eye, you did a bang up job. From experience I can tell you , looking down a chimney with the residue on fire is like looking down into the jaws of hell. That fire was put out with no serious damage to the chimney, or house itself, but I've been to other fires where the home owners weren't so lucky. Again, well done.

    • @falllineridge
      @falllineridge  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to hear that from a pro, Jim. This chimney did catch fire about 3 years ago. Thankfully it was not a serious one and did no damage. Left me with a healthy respect for creosote buildup though.

    Beagles are a great dog & really good with kids. My oldest son's 1st dog was a Beagle, he was his 1st bday present. Not everyone likes the sound of a Beagle baying but it's a sound I really miss.
    They do like to roam/wander & once their nose hits a scent... let's just say they have a mind of their own.😁
    Underground fencing didn't work with ours, I hope you have more success than we did. They're prone to hip dysplasia when they get old. Our last Beagle (we had 2) died of old age 11 yrs ago & aside from babysitting our son's Coon Hound, I just can't bring myself to adopt another one. Such great dogs though. I really hope Cricket brings as much joy to your family as our Butch & Louis brought to us.

      Mike, that's a rough story brother. Sadly I think a lot of people have the same story. Reminds me of the story of the two men who had an abusive father. One of them grew up to be very abusive himself. Someone asked him what happened, he said, "I watched my dad." The other one grew up to be a loving and kind father. Someone asked him why he was that way and he said, "I watched my dad."
      I was blessed myself to have a great dad, I hope to pass that down to my own son.
      Thanks for watching, Mike!

    I use to climb up on the roof twice a year to clean the clay liner, using the fireplace. Pain in the neck! 8 years ago I had a fireplace insert installed with a 6” stainless steel liner. I burn well seasoned firewood and haven’t had any creosote build up and the Insert drafts excellent! Now I clean the 6” pipe once a year and only a small residue of powder comes down.👍

    I used to use a cool cable meter at a previous job. You could connect it to the one end and it would tell you how many feet out the break was. You would just use a locator and pace it off then dig down and there would be the break. Your little rig was not as fast but it certainly did the trick.

    Run some quick, hot fires in your stove to help eliminate the creosote. With a well made chimney with ceramic clay liners a chimney fire cleans them out. Close supervision required. Don't shut yer dang stove down so much. Beagle looked happy to get out. I used to have a Beagle, prefer cats by a far margin. One day the Beagle will figure out that a dead run over the wire is freedom to follow it's nose. Then the wire keeps him out. Could be a blessing. Cute puppy, though.

    I made a chimney cap for my chimney pretty close to the design you have. I had a 15 foot steel rod with abscraperbthatbI welded on to the end of thebrodnandbusedbthatbto scrape out the creosote from the ceramic liner in the chimney. My scraperbacted like your hoe but it was 15 feet long. I would bend the rod to one side if the chimney putting pressure on the scraper, which I kep pretty sharp. I like how the English used to do it - cut a bunch of Holly and pull it up and down the chimney with a rope to remove the creosote. A metal detector should find your buried wire.
