Gotta love Dennis Wilson. One of the few drummers who played open-handed style (non-crossed, left-side ride cymbal).
What he lacked in technical proficiency (and perhaps subtlety) he made up for with enthusiasm and sheer propulsive power. At one point he breaks a stick, and literally doesn't miss a beat.

For all the talk of Brian Wilson being a genius, and I'm sure he is, for me, it's his falsetto singing, on so many of the early and mid 60s Beach Boys songs, that blows me away. Brian was a big, tall guy, playing bass guitar when performing live, at least, and yet he can simultaneously sing this incredible falsetto. I'd like to say Brian Wilson's singing, is as iconic and essential to classic rock history as even that of Robert Plant.
And, despite so many commenters here, and in general, being negative about Mike Love, I think his lead singing is outstanding (I think he's in some Vocal Hall of Fame, for his work with The Beach Boys), and I appreciate his maturity and stage presence.

    • @roseforyoubabe

@@roseforyoubabe I don’t know, hard to beat Brian Wilson’s 1964 falsetto. The end of “Fun, Fun, Fun” where Wilson does his “Wooh ooooh.....” that’s pretty iconic. Then again, Barry Gibbs “Nights on Broadway” falsetto was pretty iconic too.

Pretty much all Beach Boys songs could have gone to 3- 3:30 min.. most were too short but I guess that is how they were back then.

    Two comments regarding previous posts.
    1. Mike Love did play an instrument - the saxophone. Fun, Fun, Fun is one song where he plays the sax (I think)
    2. Chuck Berry DID get credit for Surfin' USA. He got both song and lyric credit even though he didnt write the lyrics. Now this might have happened after The T.A.M.I. Show but he did get credit
Beach Boys are my favorite band of all time and this song is my favorite.

On this day in 1964 {April 18th} the Beach Boys performed "I Get Around" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'...
One month later on May 23th, 1964 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #76; and on June 28th it peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} and spent 15 weeks on the Top 100 {and for 9 of those 15 weeks it was on the Top 10}...
The record's B-side, "Don't Worry Baby", also charted; it peaked at #24 and stayed on the Top 100 for 10 weeks...
On the same 'Bandstand' show they performed "Fun Fun Fun", it had preceded "I Get Around" on the Top 100 and reached #5...
R.I.P. Dennis Wilson {1944-1983}, Carl Wilson {1946-1998}, and Dick Clark {who passed away on this day in 2012 at the age of 82}...

Al Jardine is the guitarist all the way on the left. He and Brian were high school friends.
Brian Wilson was the songwriter and producer of all the great BB hits. Mike Love wrote some of the lyrics for some of the songs, despite his lawsuits to the contrary. Dennis drowned in 1983 and Carl succumbed to cancer in 1997 or 1998.

Great live performance! It is such a shame that Brian had the anxiety disorder because he had a great stage presence to go along with his amazing vocals and bass playing. Had he stayed healthy, they might have really given the Beatles a run for their money!

    • @sardu55
      @sardu55 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

John Lennon thought so and had a lot of respect for Wilson's writing and the bands performing. Actually, they did give the Beatles a run for their money and head-to-head did well against them. Ironically, what knocked them out of the box was music from fellow Americans, female American singers. For example, the T.A.M.I. concert they're playing here was actually headlined by a female singer: Leslie Gore. She was the show headliner.

What incredible energy! Gorgeous, explosive Dennis attacks the drums while shaking his blond hair like mad, breaks a drumstick at 1:05, but hardly misses a beat as he grabs another stick and keeps pounding away!
Mike Love is simply repulsive, but the rest of them are adorable. This was when they were young and healthy and hadn't started doing the drugs that led to Brian's breakdowns and Dennis's death. If only they could have stayed this way.

There's a motel across the street from Disneyland with a coffee kiosk (called Kowabunga) that played Beach Boys 24/7. My favorite time was early morning, before the kids woke up and clamored to leave for the park ... and I would have a quiet half hour of coffee, muffins and the soothing sound of the Beach Boys. All in the gentle warmth of a California sunrise surrounded by palm trees. And then the kids woke up! Yikes!!

Well to be fair, it’s hard for such a niche genre to be popular for that long, there’s only so much to say about surfing. It’s only because of how amazing The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, and other acts were that the surf genre remained popular as long as it did.
