Washington Parks Bike Tour: BEAUTIFUL Yakima Canyon!

- The Washington Parks Loop is a bike route that goes through some of Washington State's most gorgeous places: North Cascades National Park, Olympic National Park, Mount Rainier National Park, plus countless state parks. We began our ride in Selah, which is a town right next to Yakima, and spent our first day of our trip riding through the beautiful Yakima Canyon! Cherish the time with your dad. Thanks for mentioning this trip, or start of one. I live in Yakima so this route interests me greatly. Although my quests for the most part will be mostly on gravel terrain.
It’s a beautiful area!! Maybe I’ll be able to go back and ride the route one day! I’m actually currently with my dad- about to ride the GAP and C&O trail out east.

Gary here in Rapid City SD - we have some absolutely stunning bicycling here in the Black Hills area - road biking - mountain biking - it's a great place to ride. People are nice and friendly here too. So keep the Black Hills in mind for a future bike tour. See you on the road 🙂
Oh- we definitely have it on our list! We are wanting to ride the Mickelson Trail. I haven’t looked into the mountain biking in that area- I’ll check it out. Adventure Cycling Association has a route called Parks, Peaks, and Prairies (or something along those lines) that goes through that whole area- that’s on my list too!! It’s such a beautiful area! Growing up, we would always just drive through the area on the way to Tetons or Yellowstone. My husband and I decided on our way home from Glacier one year that we needed to take a dedicated trip to the area, and so we did. We loved it!!

I lived near that canyon on the Ellensburg side. Great place to ride on 2 wheel.

i am so glad you share your awesome videos. i really like your voice,and your sayings. i biked today on my gravel bike. i am going on a bike tour in a week. that hostil on da katy trail , i think is in tebetts!! i aint stayed there yet , but i will at some point!!

Definitely agree how you stored the car in the storage unit. Airports are also not a safe area to park and they don't insure the safety. Good decision on your part with your dad.

Sorry to hear about the personal health issues that cut your trip short. I have used Amtrak on cycle tours on the West coast,may be something to consider for the future. You arrive rested and booking ahead saves on costs, bike transportation is extremely easy with Amtrak as well. Trusting you will get to complete the trip in the future, wishing you tailwinds. P.S. you will enjoy sleeping in the van as the rain falls, remember all those mornings you packed you bike up in the rain, the comforts of camper and is not to be understated.
Thank you! My only experience with Amtrak was when we rode the GAP and C&O and it was a great experience! I met a couple of cyclists on my Pacific Coast ride who utilized Amtrak- so I definitely need to do some research on it pertaining to bike route locations! As far as the van- hearing the rain is one thing I am very excited about!!

Parking your car in a storage unit is a great idea. I suppose if you fly to your next destination, you could store your bike cases in a storage unit. Keep pedaling.

Hi, short rides are my most frequent.
At the end or middle of my day, 20-25 miles.
A 10 hour mandated rest break from driving a commercial truck.
I keep the bicycle in trucks cab, out of the weather and away from the view questionable eyes.
Normally I drive 500 to 700 miles in a shift, weather, load etc may vary this number.

Honey! I drive 150,000 miles a year, and I still ride my bicycle as often as my work schedule allows.

Did you get to see the "Welcome to Yakima, the Palm Springs of Washington" billboard?
Something else to consider re a loop of the Olympic Peninsula is logging trucks. Lots of them on roads that often have little to no shoulder. As for Mt. Rainier, it's a difficult ride through the park on an unloaded, lightweight bike, let alone loaded touring. Hope you get the opportunity to visit us again.
We did see that sign!! Good to know about the logging trucks. Those are never fun. I encountered lots of logging trucks when I rode through the Appalachians. We didn’t run into too many riding the Pacific Coast, but we didn’t ride the Olympic Peninsula- so that is good to know. Also- good to know about Mt. Rainier. It seems like all the videos I could find were just videos of people riding through there and nobody ever mentioned what the riding was like, as far as difficulty level.

Good idea to store your car in the stirage unit while doing a long distance ride. Great video, too bad that it was cut short. I'm heading to my bike tour Erie Canal bike trail next month can't wait.👍

Can't wait to see your next adventures! A few weekends ago, I attempted the Trans Am section through southern Illinois. Started at Cave-in-Rock and made it to Ava, Illinois before I had to call it quits. I did 101 miles out of the planned 135. Over 6,600+ of elevation. I was beat but its still the best ride I've ever done so I'm happy with it. I'll try it again next year. It's put on by St. Nick Bike Club here in southern Illinois. You might enjoy it - I know you're close. I'm in Metropolis area, right across the Paducah.
That section is tough!! And yeah- 6,600 ft…..I’d be dead haha!! I probably was dead when I rode it…ha!!! I’ll have to check out the bike club!! And yes- we are very close! I live over by KY lake and am in Paducah several times a week! Occasionally go through Metropolis to go hike around in Shawnee.

Sorry about the trip . I did want to ask , did you get reservations for all your planned camp sites ?
Thank you! Our first night (and only night) we just spend at a KOA. After that, we didn’t have any reservations anywhere. I know that can get tricky near the national parks, but the state parks in Washington are required by law to accommodate cyclists and hikers who are traveling by their own power. From my experience previously riding through Washington near the coast, that has been true. The maps that I follow also list a lot of places with hiker/biker sites that you don’t have to reserve ahead of time. I have ran into situations where the hiker/biker sites were full, but they still have to accommodate you if that is the case. With all that being said, I’m sure there are places who may try to contest the requirements or who may not be fully aware of the requirements.
How sad to hear of you having to abort your trip... hope things work out OK and that you'll get a chance to do the trip in the near future.
Yeah, we were pretty bummed…but it was the right decision. We will definitely try again though!!
Gosh, wear some sun protection for your arms!
Have you heard of sunscreen?
Sunscreen only stops UV. White lycra arm covers stop UV and reduce heat from the sun. Makes riding in 90+deg much more bearable.
