It's scary how time repeats itself over and over they say we've come a long way but it looks like to me we've gone a long way back.... this man was great and spoke the truth about America
@@nikovibez1568 (20 born in ‘04) I believe this was some time in 1974, as Gerald Ford had been sworn in to replace Nixon, and he speaks about Nelson Rockefeller getting ready to become VP. (Neither were elected because of Watergate)
Everytime I hear this, i want to cry that it is not heard as it should be heard! We could put things like this in class and when finished, give them a test at end of and ask what they got from this educational artist genius! Have Mercy for heroes such as this and rappers, TAKE NOTE!
I remember, when this was released in 1975. I was 21 years old and I was already 'conscious'. It is still relevant today, given who is in the Whitehouse. And most like, the same result will occur--nothing but Pardons will occur.
RIP, Brother Gil. I'll never forget the time I sat right next to as your performed at Yoshi's in Frisco. Just a year later, you passed over to the other side.
When I first heard this song/rap in the 70s the politics of Watergate was unprecedented. The end where Gil Scott says "what goes around...comes around" has had no truer meaning than the days since 9/11. The revolution will not be televised - it's live!
It amazes me how subjects like this one can bring people together to argue, but seldom to agree. There are several certainties that could be the basis for a collective move forward if we were to recognize them. 1. There is something definitely wrong. 2. None of us has THE solution. 3. As long as we let insignificant ideological, religious, or philosophical nuances grow into insurmountable obstacles to our collective work, then we will always be stuck. Look for agreements not arguments...
It is so sad that my realization of this genius only came after his death. I loved "B Movie" 30 years ago, and for some reason never followed through and became a fan. We need more poets like Gil to open our minds to todays inequalities.....

I just now discovered Gill Scott Heron and I am sad sad. Everything there is to know is within his words, within his speech. And fifty years later ‘shit’ was learnd But what a beautiful speaker. This beauty just can’t be understood by the hating bunch.
Respectful correction, Gil did not endorse the title 'Grandfather of rap' he preferred to be thought of as a poet. I agree in that the content and intent of his words were far more intellectual than most rap.
Rap GIL- Scott Heron's time which is my time is when BROTHERS got 2 gether to TALK CURRENT EVENTS, not gendre of music & yes he is a poet for those that understand. Food For Thought Go Figure 🤔
Rap of 2 day have a few poets but they come @ u with street knowledge. Ice Cube, & T, KRS, which hits the lower intellect no less the truth. Example, In a rest. with my lady BLK. SIS. all the characteristics of a white Coco Chanel that type will not listen to that music to vulgar, but the White Kid n the burbs r all up on it.
Yeah apparently he didn't like the Godfather of Rap thing. But he also didn't really have a problem with rap music he just wished more rappers were more conscious and talked about social issues. Which since the 90s theres been tons of great conscious rappers.
WOW! Ok, i'm white and this guy is a serious genius. I found him in GTA 4 video game track, and compared to the crap rap/pop lady crap- crap, and the music of today, they couldn't come close to the talent level this man has. And i was born way after all of this music was recorded. Not was Gil Scott a musician, he was a master speaker, poet and preacher of the street too. Damn!
Considering how much Gil Scott-Heron had to say about Ford - “the oatmeal man”, he would probably have had much more to share with us had he lived long enough to witness Trump “the orange man” of today! But that’s not to imply that he wouldn’t have had anything to say about all who were in power between them!
What´s so interesting about gil´s art is how his stuff sounds like it was recorded in the 00s. Anybody knows "watergate blues"? Man, all you have to do is exchange the words "vietnamese" with "iraqi" and the whole song could be about TODAY!!!! Long live Gil!
i remember when these words were first spoken...we were proud and awake...somehow we believe the struggle is over..dont think that because a blackman is running for the highest office of the land...we aint catching hell...
WOW!! This is my first time ever hearing this and if this was first done in '75 yes things have gotten a little better but we've still got a long way to go!!!!
Everything about this is good. Remember, please, to avaoid judging and labeling, My Irish orphaned grandfather who lived at the YMCA in Brockton, Massachusetts, and learned to box there, became a champion featherweight boxer, ate oatmeal for breakfast everyday. Nothing tepid or indecisive about James Boomer Donahue, who went on to work for the telephone company, and bring my father, Paul Foley, into that profession. Dad was born in 1929, youngest of eight children, in the first year of the depression. He worked for the phone company for 38 years and died of asbestos lung cancer one year after he retired, in Marlborough, Massachusetts. He was not a smoker. He was my father
Ain't nobody denying that a lot of political pardons are just that--political. The point Gil is making hear is that the powerful and privileged rarely go to jail. Check out Lindsay Lohan as a good example.
where does this performance take place? Please post if ya know. When God made Gil, he broke the mold. A poetic genius of the political poetry genre where so few dare to tread. Whose got the torch now?
"They call it due process and some people are overdue" That line resonates so much with me, it is so simple and yet relevant to current affairs. Know what I'm sayin. Where's the accountability hiding. Will we ever know? hah
you have it a lot better than it was back then....don't forget...these people like Gil were only special because the suffering they endured brought it out of them.....do you really wish you were exposed to that kind of suffering? there's enough injustice in your own time to fight against.....don't wish you were in the past.....it may seem like simpler times, but really nothing has changed...the deceivers deceive.....and the believers believe....been that way for a Loooong time....
ioreodream Nixon was committed a crime he never went to court or nor was he arrested. The question is how did the president become involved as Ford was president at the time. You have to go through due process before the president can even intervene in the process. But this never happened.
It's 2024 and this is still as relevant as ever.
