@pdoggspeaks You are getting it completely wrong here, 4 of the Indian batsman that RR have retained have all been unearthed by RR, these players doesn’t had any value until RR backed and Played them regularly and all of them are now in the India Senior Team. I agree that 14 for Jurel may feel a bit over priced but he is an Indian Middle Order Batsman and even if there is a whole in setup after the Auction, RR can trade him and get the players they want by using Jurel’s value as am pretty Sure there will be at least 2-3 teams that still need quality Indian Players in the middle order. When it comes to bowling, if you look at RR the bowlers that performed well are Avesh Khan( was in very bad form when he came to RR from LSG), Prasid Krishna, Kuldeep Sen, Karthik Tyagi and even Sandeep Sharma for that matter all of them are really underrated bowlers and RR got the best out of them. Spin was the best weapon to RR in last cycle but am not sure with exiting Retention slab they won’t think to retain Ashwin ,as he won’t go beyond 6-8 CRS , Yuzi might have a good offer from RCB and he might have not agreed to the a 10-12 Cr retention as he may be assured more from RCB. Hetti is a good call if Buttler is not fit and is not coming to auction. Getting a good left handed middle order batsman is a tough task in an auction. I feel RR might go hard for Abhibav Manohar or an Indian fisnisher who played in one of the Indian domestic leagues, and for quality Indian Fast bowlers. They will try and get one or two of Washi, Ashwin or Tanush kottaiyan, they will also go for Midhun the spinner. One more thing look at KKR they were playing less than the amount in the Auction Purse by paying 12 crore to the player and remaining 2 as deduction, rather than that it is always good to give it to the player the entire 14 as they deserve it , this will be the taught that Dravid had and that’s how Jurel and Hetti may have received that money.

Hi pdogg, I think the reason for retaining jurel is maybe he will bat at number 3 . I think sanju will open with jaiswal because sanju is fighting for one of the opening spots in Indian team, so that may be the reason for not retaining butler . And they may have felt there is not much quality Indian players who can bat at number 3 because big players like pant , rahul and Iyer will go for plenty. Still I feel they should have retained chahal or bolt but I think this is the reason they retained jurel.

Prasanna, the minimum squad size is 18. RR already have 6. It's not going to be tough to fill in 12 players with 41 Cr remaining. Besides, one-trick pony Dube at 12 Cr is even worse than Hetmyer/Jurel. Teams like RR,SRH,MI,KKR will try to cap their squads to 20 max.
With this budget RR might even spend 15CR on a single player with that 41Cr budget. We have seen them doing that. If you look at the released names like Trent, Ash, Chahal etc it might look like the worst retention. But tbh with 41Cr theyll get a decent bowling unit . They might sign a leg spinner, left arm pacer & right arm pacer for a total of 20Cr. They might spend 10Cr on a foreign batting allrounder. And remaining 11Cr on other remaining players.
It’s going to be difficult for RR because there are 9 teams in contention with better purse value. Rightly pointed out by PDogg other teams will raise the bid for RR to give up half way on most players.
Poor strategy from RR but doesn't look all that poor if we look at it this way. Instead of building a core, they fixed their top 5 with the retentions with Sandeep Sharma as their lead bowler. Perhaps Sanju wanted to open the innings considering the Indian team selection, so they might have let go of Buttler. Like Octopus said, Dhruv Jurel hasn't been given ample chances in a specific position. In the last match he played, he got more time and made it count. I feel that they might want to try Jurel at 3. Doesn't look too bad with only one foreigner in the current line-up. They might as well go for lesser-known foreign spinners and fast bowlers and assign them a role although it will be a huge risk. @pdoggspeaks You are getting it completely wrong here, 4 of the Indian batsman that RR have retained have all been unearthed by RR, these players doesn’t had any value until RR backed and Played them regularly and all of them are now in the India Senior Team. I agree that 14 for Jurel may feel a bit over priced but he is an Indian Middle Order Batsman and even if there is a whole in setup after the Auction, RR can trade him and get the players they want by using Jurel’s value as am pretty Sure there will be at least 2-3 teams that still need quality Indian Players in the middle order.
When it comes to bowling, if you look at RR the bowlers that performed well are Avesh Khan( was in very bad form when he came to RR from LSG), Prasid Krishna, Kuldeep Sen, Karthik Tyagi and even Sandeep Sharma for that matter all of them are really underrated bowlers and RR got the best out of them.
Spin was the best weapon to RR in last cycle but am not sure with exiting Retention slab they won’t think to retain Ashwin ,as he won’t go beyond 6-8 CRS , Yuzi might have a good offer from RCB and he might have not agreed to the a 10-12 Cr retention as he may be assured more from RCB.
Hetti is a good call if Buttler is not fit and is not coming to auction. Getting a good left handed middle order batsman is a tough task in an auction.
I feel RR might go hard for Abhibav Manohar or an Indian fisnisher who played in one of the Indian domestic leagues, and for quality Indian Fast bowlers.
They will try and get one or two of Washi, Ashwin or Tanush kottaiyan, they will also go for Midhun the spinner.
One more thing look at KKR they were playing less than the amount in the Auction Purse by paying 12 crore to the player and remaining 2 as deduction, rather than that it is always good to give it to the player the entire 14 as they deserve it , this will be the taught that Dravid had and that’s how Jurel and Hetti may have received that money.
I agree that RR have had a bad retention considering their bowling core they let go bar SANDEEP SHARMA, however I disagree with PDOGG in the sense they will do bad in all 3 years simply because they have set up their top 5 already which is pretty strong

Will they challenge for the title or even win? Mostly no but you can never know since RR is the only one team who won the IPL without much stars as well

Hi pdogg, I think the reason for retaining jurel is maybe he will bat at number 3 . I think sanju will open with jaiswal because sanju is fighting for one of the opening spots in Indian team, so that may be the reason for not retaining butler . And they may have felt there is not much quality Indian players who can bat at number 3 because big players like pant , rahul and Iyer will go for plenty. Still I feel they should have retained chahal or bolt but I think this is the reason they retained jurel.

Rr did a blunder but i think they are going for supply demand very few are available for middle order and finishers. They will buyback their spinners and they easily get foreign opener and a bowlers

I think RR did a good job retaining the Indian core. Only issue is spending 11Cr for Hetmeyr. But they will easily manage to get a good team. Lot of options available in mega auction.
I think what many of you fail to understand is the money they MAY go for in auctions and saving the remaining money, it's not just about blindly retaining indian players, bumrah or kohli for 18 is one thing considering they are greats, jurel for 14 is ridiculous
@Ashvin404 can't agree, it depents on the the team's strategy. What many others fail to understand is this team had Faith in Parag and Jaiswal when others written them off. They believe Jurel will bring that value in long-term and thay don't want to gamble with his value. Its also a message to that particular player from the franchise that thay value him. 👍🏼

I think RR can still able to form a strong 11 pdogg sir. They are considering Dhruv jurel as next sanju Samson and last year also ashwin and chahal not had their best season.
Samson played a predominant role in this cherry picking retention stated by Dravid. Samson messed up. He may pay big price in the tournament .
Bro what do you think dravid , sangakkara are brainless , RRs retentions are as expected Top 4 Indian core batters left handed finisher and an experienced all 3 phase bowler set . Aswin is not great in ipl as you said in last 2 seasons 4 overs 36 runs 0 wicket , yuzi also faded in last 2 seasons , Buttler is a match winner but being a strong pillar of RR jos just left the team in playoffs ,so they don't want to retain such English players any more . Ss , jaiswal, parag , Jurel are RR people , they could easily get good replacement for aswin and yuzi from domestic talent scout, also pleanty of options available for boult and Jos . Only thing they can do better is used RTM for Jurel and hetti , 16 cr for ss , 14 for jaiswal , 13 cr for parag , 4 cr sandeep. If they convince them then they 33 cr remaining with that they could easily use RTM for hetti and Jurel . So they could save 10 cr atleast. May be when we retain someone the bond will increase that is the choice may be . Any way hetti surely go for 11 cr or above because no other options are available Miller , Rutherford, stoinis , time David are the only other options. Jurel may reach 10 cr surely. So it's not bad from RR .

So IPL retentions are based on many factors like team bond , and many factors , it's not like how bcci selection, that's y pant , Iyer , kl arshdeep are not retained and Jurel is retained. RR kept faith in parag for the last 7 yrs when he is just 17 and now it paid for them . Jurel is the find of royals so they don't want to throw away their find to some other team and also on retaining Jurel his loyalty for team increase, Venky Iyer said he became sad when kkr retention list get out. So we can't say RR retention is poor. From franchise side it's really nice.

Prasanna, the minimum squad size is 18. RR already have 6. It's not going to be tough to fill in 12 players with 41 Cr remaining. Besides, one-trick pony Dube at 12 Cr is even worse than Hetmyer/Jurel.
Teams like RR,SRH,MI,KKR will try to cap their squads to 20 max.

With this budget RR might even spend 15CR on a single player with that 41Cr budget. We have seen them doing that.
If you look at the released names like Trent, Ash, Chahal etc it might look like the worst retention. But tbh with 41Cr theyll get a decent bowling unit . They might sign a leg spinner, left arm pacer & right arm pacer for a total of 20Cr. They might spend 10Cr on a foreign batting allrounder. And remaining 11Cr on other remaining players.
LSG could not risk sending Nicolas Pooran to the auctions. But RTM could have been used for Mayank and Bishnoi.
It’s going to be difficult for RR because there are 9 teams in contention with better purse value. Rightly pointed out by PDogg other teams will raise the bid for RR to give up half way on most players.
Poor strategy from RR but doesn't look all that poor if we look at it this way. Instead of building a core, they fixed their top 5 with the retentions with Sandeep Sharma as their lead bowler.
Perhaps Sanju wanted to open the innings considering the Indian team selection, so they might have let go of Buttler.
Like Octopus said, Dhruv Jurel hasn't been given ample chances in a specific position. In the last match he played, he got more time and made it count. I feel that they might want to try Jurel at 3.
Doesn't look too bad with only one foreigner in the current line-up. They might as well go for lesser-known foreign spinners and fast bowlers and assign them a role although it will be a huge risk.

And coming to RR who did not retain butler may be the decision was taken by Sanju himself as he wants to open the batting with jaiswal as he is currently opening in Indian T20 and Dru jurel can play at no3.
