We just got back from car camping today, and were caught in a thunderstorm. Thank you for this very informative video! I’ll be better prepared next time…

I was stuck in a kayak going down the peace river in Florida during a lighting storm. I never paddled so fast in my life. As soon as phones got internet access... lets just say my friends call me Radar now.

Pretty cool awareness video, Scott. I've been trapped and chased by many storms in the high elevation area on my backpacking trips before. It is super scary and something to be mindful of always. Take care and have a nice day.

Went through this the other night and can attest to the fact it is f'n loud! Was on an air mattress so was fine but it was at night and the flash was blindingly bright!

In the early 1990s I was at Big Bend National Park camped near Emory Peak. I was asleep in my small backpacking tent among some trees. It was early morning, still dark and a heavy thunder storm moved in. I was quite concerned being stuck in my tent on the ground and no where else to shelter. I remember, wishing I was anyplace else but there in that moment. Thankfully the storm moved off and I was not harmed.

Like they say, "If you can see it, flee it. If you can hear it, clear it." And while it's not exact, being off the summit by noon isn't the worst mantra if you're above treeline. Knowing clouds, particularly cumulonimbus, timing passes and being aware of the moisture on the ground isn't a bad call either. I've only been caught once, after many years, and a little pee came out.

I was drawn to your "defend" post when I saw your cabin tent and wondered
How you liked it. Is it a Eureka? Back in the 90's I bought the version one generation before yours. It was a disaster. Leaked and allowed storm driven rain under the outer layer. I wrote Eureka an extensive critical letter. 2 years later, your version came out. Main change was that they made the fly bigger and tied down farther. Mine dud not take high winds. A problem with adirondack thunder storms.

The one we have here is just an Ozark Trail 10x14 cabin tent. It worked well for three seasons but had similar issue with wind getting under the fly.
We now have more of a yurt style tent that is single layer.

I have had 1 encounter in the backcountry where the lightning and thunder were simultaneous… hunkered in a tent was the most scared I have been in a long time

@@RestlessWonderer Mine was 60 mph straight line winds. heavy rain. a 20 degree drop in temperature and so many strikes you couldn't keep track all the while sitting in the middle of an island here on the Gulf of Mexico!!
