We all are known that this ballet dance perfomance was belong to Khmer empire and indian empire. We called it lkhoun Khoul in cambodia, it called lkhoun khon to thailand. Both are beautiful, but the only huge difference is the form. As you can see in the Cambodian performance, the dancers forms are curved; from their toes to their fingers, elbow etc. As for the Thai dancers they are curved, but not as flexible as the Cambodian dancers. Being a Cambodian dancers myself, we were trained at a young age to do stretches for our flexibility; to be able to bend every part of our body. Some may say we are double jointed 😅🙋🏻♀️

@@crAZNimal The Khmer Royal Ballet of the Cambodian court were still performing all of these dances based on the training they all got from the Siamese Royal Court up until the 1960s. I think it’s really important to stress how close in relationship the culture and familial bonds the Thai and Khmer royalty used to share. Some Thai dancers were also part of the Cambodian royal ballet. At that time, the royal ballet dancers were property of the king, they could not leave the palace nor get married, as their jobs were to perform dance that functioned as ceremonial rituals and eventually used in foreign policy, to engage with other countries, literally dancing slaves with emanated status. Queen Kossamak in 1940s began to distinguish Khmer arts from Thai influence by gathering all the Khmer dance masters to develop Khmer royal dances. They began training a new generation of Apsara dancers that became the blue print of how Cambodia systematically move forward with the arts and recreating old stories from the walls of Angkor Wat, and even revitalizing Khmer costumes based on the wall carvings.
There’s no shame in recent history because Cambodia is still a young nation and an old identity seeking to establish itself. We’re left with a long legacy of decline for the last 500 years before the French occupation, where it was strong Siamese influence on contemporary Cambodian arts.
Sorry for the long read, but Cambodians should know the reality instead of living a lie. Most “ancient” apsara dance numbers today developed in the 1940s onward and the first iteration of indigenous Khmer Royal Ballet was in the 1960s. The scene “churning of the milk sea” was also recently created. There’s a reason why the technical skills and the arts to produce a fantastic performance theater, looks underdeveloped to the grand scale of what Thais produce. This isn’t to insult the efforts of the Khmer, but to objectively state my point that Cambodia did not have the time and capital to refine their arts and move completely away from the Siamese influence. I take the fine example of Israel reviving a dead language and culture to establish a modern country. Same with Khmer, using ancient history to create a modern nation state for Khmers.

Khon was initially a part of a sacred Brahman ceremony to recount the glory of Lord Vishnu. There were no audiences, as everybody participated in the ceremony. Later on, the performance became focused on the glorification of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu whose story was recounted in the epic Ramayana.
As Indian influences spread to Southeast Asia, the story of Ramayana became popular among the ruling class. Each country came up with their own rendition of the tale, with Thailand’s version being called Ramakien (Glory of Lord Ram). Many forms of Ramayana theatre also became popular within in the region. Lakhon Khol is a traditional mask theatre performance of Cambodia that had its origins during the Angkor period. It is believed to have begun during the 10th century through the inscription K. 99 Sambor Prei Kuk temple in the reign of King Jayavarman V
I guess in Cambodia, L’khon Khol Wat Svay Andet is a unique masked theater only performed exclusively by men, even the female characters are by men. This is probably why it was selected to be on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list for safeguarding.

เขมรเป็นเมืองขึ้นของไทยมาตั้งแต่สมัยสมเด็จพระบรมราชา(เจ้าสามพระยา)ครั้งกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นราชธานีตลอดต่อมาถึงสมัยรัชกาลที่5 แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ รวมเวลาที่เขมรเป็นเมืองขึ้นของไทย 430ปี ในระหว่างนั้นนครวัดถูกทิ้งร้างอยู่ในป่าดงดิบทึบ เจ้าเขมรซึ่งเป็นเจ้าประเทศราชต้องส่งโอรสและธิดามาเป็นตัวประกันที่ในพระราชวังของไทยตามธรรมเนียมปฏิบัติ ขนบธรรมเนียมต่างๆ รวมทั้งการละครก็สูญหายไปแต่โชคดีที่มาได้รับศิลปการละครทั้งหลายจากวังหลวงของไทย ที่เห็นชัดเจนคือการแต่งกายของตัวละครจะไม่เหมือนภาพแกะสลักที่นครวัด แต่จะลอกแบบของไทยไป 100% ทั้งเรื่อง การแต่งกาย การขับร้อง การเอื้อนเสียง แต่เล่นได้ไม่ดีเท่าไทย คือรับได้เฉพาะที่ง่ายๆ ที่เป็นพื้นฐานเท่านั้น ในระหว่าที่เป็นเมืองขึ้นของไทยเขมรก็ถูกญวณแย่งดินแดนและเจ้าเขมรก็แตกความสามัคคีกัน บ้านแตกสาแหรกขาดไม่มีเวลาฟื้นฟูศิลปวัฒนธรรม โขนที่เขมรเล่นอยู่คือโขนที่คัดลอกไปจากไทย ถ้าเป็นโขนเขมรจริงๆ แต่ครั้งโบราญต้องแต่งตัวแบบภาพแกะสลักที่นครวัด แต่เพราะนครวัดสูญหายไปถึง400ปี วัฒนธรรมเขมรจึงขาดตอน
และเขมรยังตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของฝรั่งเศสอีก 90ปี รวมเเล้วเขมรตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของไทยและฝรั่งเศสเป็นเวลา 520ปี ทำให้เขมรสูญเสียอัตลักษณ์ทางวัฒนธรรมจนต้องขอให้ไทยส่งครูไปสอนการรำละครให้ ละครและโขนจึงคล้ายคลึงกับของไทยแม้ไม่ดีเท่า นอกจากนั้นในสมัยรัชการที่5 หม่อมเจ้าฉวีวาด ปราโมช คือผู้ที่นำคณะละครจากบวรราชวังในกรมพระราชวังบวรวิชัยชาญไปสอนให้ที่ราชสำนักเขมร เขมรยังโชคร้ายซำ้เข้าไปอีกเมื่อคนมีความรู้ของเขมรถูกพอล พต ฆ่าล้างเผ่าพันธุ์เสียนับล้านคน เขมรที่เหลืออยู่ในปัจจุบันจึงอวดดีด้อยค่าไทยเพื่อให้รู้สึกว่าตนเหนือกว่า แต่ความจริงไม่ใช่ ใครก็มองพฤติกรรมนี้ออก คิดๆ ดูก็น่าสงสารเขาเหมือนกันที่เขามีพฤติกรรมแบบเด็กๆ เราเป็นผู้ใหญ่ก็แผ่เมตตาก็แล้วกัน
