You made me homesick, for a place I've never seen... I live in California near the foothills of the Seira Nevada Mountains. Lots of farm land with old oak trees, creeks and rivers. Reminds me of the mountains there, quite a lot. We have wonderful people too. Many blessing and hugs, as you all heal the land and help people find some type of normal.
Glad everyone was safe and you had enough food and water to stay put rather than trying to force a route and getting into a worse situation. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Shug, good to see you with Hickery! I'm so glad that everyone got out safely. A trip you will remember. JUL-2016 I was on Fall Lake solo trip with 100 MPH winds and large trees coming down all around me. I'm glad that I had my Piragis canoe rental tied to a tree. Take Care!
I do enjoy a nice rain on the tarp while I sleep, but there is a limit to that level of enjoyment. Obviously you made the best of it. Glad no one was injured with all the broken branches and fallen trees. My Lord!
I was hanging not far from you in Jefferson National Forest, doing hurricane relief right after you were there. Had no idea the guy that taught me most everything about hanging was right next door! I didn’t know about the fall hang, hope to see you there with better weather next year!
Good on you for helping out with the Relief~ All I can do is contribute some moola from up here so I did. The only way I can get through this is to remember cities that got rebuilt after WW2 and some I have visited. It can be done.
The first hammock hang my husband and I ever had with brand new setups, we enjoyed in Acadia National Park in Maine during tropical storm remnants. What a wild first night in a hammock, lol. I had just come down through Shenandoah, Blue Ridge Parkway, and GSMNP camping with my son a week or so before Helene. It’s one of my favorite places in the US. Prayers going out to all involved. Thank you for sharing your experience. Been watching you since 2012.
We kinda got lucky up there compared to what happened down mountain! I got to visit Acadia once but did not get to camp. Was performing on a cruise ship.
Glad you guys made it out safely. Helene kicked our keisters in WNC, East TN and SW Virginia as well as all the areas between the gulf and here. It was bad enough in the house, I couldn't imagine it with just a tarp and hammock.

Awesome adventure in sector soggy, Shug, considering the conditions you all were in. Those frog legs looked scrumptuous...hahaha. Glad that everyone made it out safely. My brother and I experienced that decades ago in the South Pacific and it was quite a memorable experience. Sad though for those who were affected. Our hearts go out to them.
Asheville here - so glad you all were safe and didn't catch any of those big limbs or trees too directly. Reminded me of the time you and Hickory caught that nasty lightening storm up in the gorge - you boys do have a knack for finding the most pucker-worthy weather to hang in😄 Helene caught us all by surprise. So much will never be the same, but hopefully that doesn't mean it can't be good again. Hope to see you back in WNC after we get things rinsed off and swept up a bit.
Was north of you in KY! Wind gusting 60-65 MPH. Warbonnet Superfly came through like the champ it has in similar rain and sleet. First time I worried though cause the 2 - 3 foot hardwood were uprooted.
First and foremost I shall pray for the families who lost lives and homes. This was a devastating storm. I don’t need to tell you this but you guys are very lucky! Thank goodness you guys are ok. Shug, I’ll tell ya! Nothing like hangin during a hurricane to gain confidence in your setup! Oh my goodness! I did a solo trip on the summer solstice weekend on the long trail and it stormed like a you know what and I was warm, comfy and dry in my ddhammocks setup the whole time. Little river flowing underneath my setup 😃. I was good. I enjoyed my Netflix movies with no worry at all. So good to see you out there. Take care. NQU

It’s still hard to process, Shug. I’m in the Piedmont of NC, but I am not mentally prepared to travel into WNC yet. The human toll is incalculable. There are places I have enjoyed that were wiped off the map by Helene. All the places you’ve mentioned were affected, but I’m sure you and Hickery thought of others, of towns and restaurants and even places like the Foothills Trail, too. It’s doubling sickening when folk try to politicize tragedy, trying to capitalize on this or that to earn a vote or make a buck. The misinformation is distressing and dangerous, yet some folks will pass it on, unquestioned, if it aligns with this or that belief - whether or not it is accurate or it diminishes hope for those struggling with unfathomable loss. The need is real; if we’re human and empathetic, party or narrative doesn’t matter. I’ve stood atop the Basin Cove overlook on the BRP, trying to imagine the horror that swept through the valley below in 1916. I’ve hiked Doughton Park trails, that flood in my mind. WNC was hammered, gobsmacked, destroyed, and 2024 may well replace 1916 in the annals of mountain lore. So pondering the natural toll seems wrong, and yet I wonder about the wilderness places, Shining Rock, the gorge … it’s the same old song, just a drop of water in the endless sea.
There have been good videos from folks that live in Asheville and around. True stuff. I pay no attention to politics and all that bullshit. But I feel empathetic and am impressed by folks doing for themselves.
You made me homesick, for a place I've never seen... I live in California near the foothills of the Seira Nevada Mountains. Lots of farm land with old oak trees, creeks and rivers.
@@shugemery agreed.
