4K is not just a better format for resolution, but also for colors and sound.

we become aware of the fact that we are trying to enjoy a movie because we’ve waited for them and paid high prices for them and got excited about them and it just isn’t an organic experience. maybe just put it on the shelf and wait for the time you’re ready to rewatch it for itself rather than because it’s been upgraded etc.. it will call out to you when you’re ready

I personally don't think found footage movies belong on 4k....it makes it too nice looking and defeats the purpose of it being a found video camera footage

Yeah, it's down to the source material. I have no objection to 4K if it's shot on a 4K phone, but if they're shooting on professional 4K cameras and not 'dirtying up' the image properly, then it feels fake. I think The Blair Witch Project hits the sweet spot.

Isn't 4K just giving us the best interpretation of the film makers original vision? So if it looks great on 4K, wouldn't that mean it was originally supposed to look great?
    These are honest questions.
Like Frogman looks like it's filmed using a potato half the time, but I wouldn't say a Blu-Ray is too much for it. Even though it looks like it'd fit better on a VHS. Just to be clear, I love that movie and the Blu-Ray release.

I've pondered this too. If the film is shot on 16mm and SD video, the optimal format is HD. That allows for maxed out bitrates. The technical limitations of the source create part of the atmosphere. When material starts being uprezzed to 4K with HDR and WCG (and AI) or is made using pro cameras instead of consumer ones, the atmosphere dies. I mean, if the film is shot on a mobile phone at 4K, then make it 4K by all means, but there's literally no point in putting consumer camera SD or HD material on anything more than Blu-ray. It's like creating video file the size of a football field to house materials the size of a regular paperback book! The Blair Witch Project remaster represents the filmmakers' intentions perfectly. I remember wondering back in the day why they were using a kinescope on the DVD!

Seeing how good my Cloverfield looked I'd be down for more on 4k. Granted that one was special effects heavy and with Dolby vision

At a certain point, isn’t it about the size of modern TVs? When you hit a certain size of TV screen, everything needs to be in 1080 or 4K, otherwise it’ll look worse than intended.

Yeah found footage doesn't need 4k, those kind are good with dvd or blu ray

  • @timlorenz8003

Yes, it absolutely is not needed. There are many films where it is not needed and even hurts the films. There are some where even a blu ray version isn't needed.

For me, I only pick up 4K if it's the only option, which is rare, or if it's a favorite that I know will look great in 4k. I'm not huge into 4k and most of the time I don't notice much of a difference. There are exceptions like Halloween, Alligator, and Night of the Comet. Found footage I don't feel is needed on 4k but everyone is different.

I’ll buy them on 4k if I don’t already own it but it does seem pointless, found footage is suppose to look like crap to feel more authentic.

How do you feel about watching FF flicks in a theater? If you can enjoy them there then there shouldn't be an issue with watching them on 4K or Blu-ray.

4K actually removes the immersion for these found footage films. They aren’t supposed to look pristine. Imo

The Visit is a bad example because it's a wink wink found footage film. It's not purely. It's framed a little too well in most shots. Something like Blair, Cloverfield, or REC, you want that raw, grittiness look, not sharp.

  • @gcaplan1

Think it largely depends on nature of film but more specific what was it shot on . If shot on film then yes if shot at 1080 or 720 likely no unless there’s a big colorange . The visit I think could be better than the Blu-ray .

You feel the same way about that as I do about people buying regular TV sitcoms on 4k. Way overkill. Game of thrones with modern fx, sure on 4k. Friends. Fuck no lol

Honestly found footage isn't my thing, I like a few don't take this wrong, but I usually find it to dizzy to watch and I play FPS games like original Doom and up, so it's not the movement, its usually all the blurr and jank in the picture, could love the movie but if there's a bunch of movement and shaking going on, I simply can't watch it it physically mess with me.
I'm also taking about what I consider found footage, the movies where you are carrying a camera that you film with or that camera is attached to you.
Blair Witch style, not stationary cameras like computer cameras where the whole movie is talking place pretty much through those cameras, that's not what I myself consider found footage.
As I said found footage ain't my thing, but I have yet to watch one of these movies and like anything about this particular camera style. Simply put if you know your looking through a camera to begin with the danger is somehow lessend.

I don’t think it’s necessarily pointless. You are widening the playing field for any potential data. I personally don’t care what KIND of movie I’m watching-I want it in its maximum potential-at least naturally (I don’t want anything artificially added). Plus, if there are multiple supplements, it has the storage capacity for all of that data without sacrificing picture.

If it's a found footage film it isn't supposed to look good. It's the point of a found footage film. I'd rather watch the blair witch on vhs than blu ray, dvd, and never on 4k. It's better the blurriness the lack of definition defines the genre.

Found footage on 4K. It just doesn’t sound right to me. The point of 4K is better immersion. Found footage on DVD or Blu-Ray is full immersion to me. I know someone who watches found footage only on their phone. They sit in a dark room, have their headphones on, and watch found footage only on their phone for full immersion. It’s found footage so they act like what is advertised. 4K is great but for found footage it just doesn’t hit the mark of what the film is trying to be in my opinion

If a movie is supposed to look better fuzzy, dark, and using 'out of focus' as an intended effect, 4K is useless. Like Shrooms or The Erotic Witch Project, keep your DVD's. I'm getting sick of this 4K worship like nothing else matters.

I think found footage is pointless in general. I see it as horrible and lazy film making.
