It could be that this had already happened, somehow been ruled ok, and the teacher had to say what the school told them to say. The biggest issue I have with these kind of ''''romance'''' books is that these '''authors''' don't even have a clue what they are writing about. And I am not talking about baseball. I don't think the author framed a grooming situation as a romance with malicious intent, or wrote a r*pe scene and pretends its just sexy time because they love r*pe. They just don't have a clue about consent or grooming or abuse. Most fan fictions have a better grasp on these concepts but somehow this still got a publisher.
I hope no victim of abuse, who thinks the way they are being treated is normal, picks up one of these books.

This line is one of the most horrifying things I've ever read, because it's so real. Her father clearly knows that Chase is a dangerous, predatory person, but his only problem with hiring him, giving him money and a platform to enable to hurt more girls is the threat to his own family.
He'll protect his own but let others become potential victims.

That intro about 19yo man dating a 14 year old girl hit close because i happened to be in class with this type of guy. He didn't pass first grade like 3 or 4 times and for some reason nobody kicked him out so when i got to highschool he was already legal adult in same class with literal children and guess what he did... of course he started grooming both girls and boys. I had bad vibes about him instantly but for some reason everyone admired him for being older (even tho he was a total loser who couldn't pass a grade) so i immediately became his target of bulling so this adult man was not only grooming 14 year olds but he was also mentally and physically abusing ones he couldn't since i wasn't the only one. Of course in same fashion i was always told im overreacting and jealous of his "girlfriends" every time i went to the teacher with concerns not even about me but others.
It's been almost 10 years and i still think about this mainly because that was the most cruel bullying i have ever experienced but also because i lost many of my friends to his grooming. I'm still baffled he was not only allowed in school with minors but that every time i talked about it with adults i was antagonized. Your story made me feel a bit less lonely about that.

And some people have the gall to complain about “haters” and “negative” reviews in reader spaces when garbage like this book gets churned out. The content is so fundamentally disturbing, and I fail to see how GROOMING of all things is appealing to read for romance.
The idea of engaging in young girls romantically or sexually is sickening. I’m convinced this is just subterfuge to get young girls to think getting hitched and knocked up as soon as possible is acceptable.

As someone who has been through a manipulative and abusive relationship (albeit a platonic one and not a romantic one) seeing this book with such an abusive relationship being marked as romance and light hearted on websites like goodreads and storygraph is just so shocking. It seems that this book was written with the author thinking this is a good and healthy relationship which just astounds me because HE ASSAULTED HER AND THERE IS NO WAY TO TWIST THAT INTO SOMETHING ROMANTIC. I thought this book was a dark romance or a psychological thriller when you were describing it, not an actual romance!

Nah, cause as a child of age gap parents myself, that 19 y/o was predatory for pursuing a 14 y/o. My parents had 20 years between them, but they didn't meet until my mom was almost 30 and had been in multiple long-term relationships with men her own age. Even they had issues in their marriage directly related to their age gap. Nothing about a dude in his mid-twenties pursuing a 17 y/o is even close to okay.

    • @Paroex
      @Paroex 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

This is not too dunk on you, but rather to recontextualise something very common for people:
You choke when something is stuck in your airways, like food or some small object.
When someone is restricting your breathing by adding external pressure to your neck whether with their hands or an implement, they are strangling you. You don't have to die for it to be strangling.
I honestly think it's a conscious effort by people who want to sanitise their actions by removing it from the actual, correct descriptor, because "strangling" sounds too violent to be marketed successfully.
Can strangling be okay if 100 % consensual and with loads of safety precautions and pre-planning? Yes. But brain damage is a thing, and there's not much margin of error to play around with there.

you can rewrite that murder pilot so easily to make more sense than the reporter being obsessed for no reason. And make the divorce make sense. Toby’s gay and Ty knows about the lovers (men of course). The reporter is an estranged ex lover obsessed and stalking Toby. NOT that I want Ty to be with chase. But Toby being outed would make a divorce make more sense considering she does love Toby. And I would hope a 4 year marriage means more than like a week of grooming. And this helps it be less of an after thought.
However chase being the murder would have been more interesting. Chase killing yankee fans that looked like Ty because he was so obsessed with having her that no one could. Turn it into a classic stalking situation to start commentary on the topic rather than romanticizing grooming.

I thought it was a little weird at the time, now obviously I know that it was super creepy. I think if you genuinely rewrote this under the lense of thriller or psychological drama it would be a scarily real life depiction of grooming and the horrors of it. Kinda like when you take out the romantic music out of a romcom and it quickly becomes a stalker thriller.
The coercion, the lovebombing, the adults around them who are either unaware or dont care, the fact that this girl is a plaything for this adult man because she knows no better.
    Its actually terrifying man.

Wisconsin has a lot of towns, districts and places that are named based off of the Native folks who were here before white folks (Most often, based off of a version transcribed by said Europeans to the point it's far removed from the original and barely recognizable). It's weird hearing someone go on about Milwaukee not being a real place, as I felt like it was one of the few cities folks outside of Wisconsin may be aware of. The history of place names though, such as Milwaukee, is pretty interesting to look into.

books like these should stay in the writer's drafts lol. sure it's fiction but it should be obvious how weird it is to frame a coercive and abusive relationship as something 'cute', forbidden and to be desired. there even seems to be some degree of self-awareness in the book, considering how often ty's age is mentioned and how often characters such as chase's manager ( and to an extent ty's dad ) disagree with the relationship. and despite that, it's still treated as though it's cute. it's so weird. books like these - romanticising and misinterpreting tropes such as forbidden lovers - has become so much more common. i'm not saying it's a reflection of the author's values, as i doubt many of these authors would want this in real life and would prefer it to stay fictional. however i think many works such as these are meant to portray the author's sexual desire and fantasies, such as being with a dominating man. it's just weird that they projected that onto a **17 year old girl**, who is CONSTANTLY referred to as innocent. it's creepy, even if it is unintentional. turning 18 half way through the book isn't an excuse, she is still mentally a child oh my good god

Either this woman just chose the Torre name for its associations, and I feel bad for Joe Torre, or she was being passed around by the team while her dad managed... and I also feel bad for Joe Torre.
I'm sorry to break the illusion, but it doesn't sound like this author is particularly informed about how amateurs enter professional baseball.
Or, for that matter, that she'd be a lot less likely to be a ballgirl, and probably would be a "clubbie"; high school girls who help with things like team daycare.
Hold on... his "this is how he tore up Stanford" story means he would have had to be applying to enter Stanford at 15, since for a college baseball player to be drafted, they have to be 3 years in college, even if one is a redshirt year.
Then it would be very hard for his rookie contract to be expired in a way that he can say "fuck Milwaukee, Yankees or bust!" unless he was the kind of player the Yankees would never sign.
