Why is it that so many gun owners claimed to use a gun in self-defense, but they almost never report the crime to the cops and there aren't nearly as many criminals being sent to the hospital as the fake numbers the surveys point out. If you want real facts, you go with FBI statistics, not home surveys that don't verify the claims of the people in the survey.
As a Brit, it seems awfully confusing as to why the Americans can't sort out this issue of basic common sense.
+tanderson596 Well it starts with back when our country was first created. We created a document called the U.S Constitution, which for simplified purposes is basically a guideline and blueprint of how our government and laws are supposed to work. A short time later we added some amendment to the U.S Constitution. The Second Amendment included "the right to bear arms" meaning people are allowed to own weapons. The Second Amendment was added (according to my web searching) in 1791 A.D.
Now people in the U.S.A have been pointing at "the right to bear arms" in The Second Amendment believing that this means that they should be allowed to own any and all weapons. I however am someone realizes that when the Second Amendment was first written the most advanced weapon we had was the musket rifle. A gun that fired once and took a while to reload. So I personally think that the right to bear arms may need to be updated to reflect the advancement of technology. But I think there are a lot of people who disagree with that idea.
And now I am going to share actual conversation had. There are some guns I have mix feelings about. But I have always had strong feelings about assault rifles. Assault rifles are not use for hunting. They are type of weapon that person would be carrying around for self-defense. They are a weapon of war, and nothing else. So I have always felt that civilians should not be allowed to own assault rifles. When I share this opinions with someone there response was to effect (I cannot remember exact words), “Wouldn’t that be scary? If the military is the only ones that have these weapons what would stop the military from taking us over? How could we defend ourselves if the military attacks us?” Something to that effect.
Yes, the person I was talking to seemed to have a paranoid fear the entire military may one day go rouge and try to take over the country. And this person seemed to believe the only way to prevent this scenario is for civilians to have access and be able to own the same types of weapons the military uses. I have no idea if this person is alone in their thinking, or if their other people that agrees with them. I just remembered being shocked and surprised by this response.
I hope this was able to provide you with some insight on the matter.

IF the good guy with a gun gets them (see the feckin video), and IF you can get to them to heal 'em, you will also likely notice that their dying bodies are loosely gripping a gun; IE, you maybe probably really shouldn't heal them. Otherwise, there isn't a gun present... and if you know what you're doing, you may have just gotten that innocent individual from "dying in terror on an airport's floor" to "on an ER bed for the forseeable future"

The amount of suffering, fear and death caused by 9/11 pales in comparison to the suffering, fear, pain and death caused by our overreaction to it.
Also the restriction against concealing firearms on planes occurred in 1968, which by the way was literally just before the golden age of plane hijackings.
So the restriction actually did nothing to stop the literal golden age of the thing it was written to stop.

What if you have a good guy with a gun...with BAD aim?
That's really the most likely case... First, the good guy, remembering they have a gun, will prioritize it over any and all other action, not dependent of context, probably getting shot in the process. Next, they will struggle to get it out of the holster in a panic, probably getting shot in the process. Then they will wildly spray bullets everywhere and be as much of a danger to all the other civilians as the shooter, probably getting shot in the process. Finally, they will be holding a smoking gun when the police appear, probably getting shot in the process.
I'm not against private ownership of guns or any other small arms (I actually own a ton of weapons myself for martial arts reasons), but I'm a massive advocate of background checks, mandatory training, and the like. I actually think something like this crisis training might be a good thing to make mandatory for all who want to own small handguns for self-defense, just to show them the naivety of the idea that having a gun is enough to stop an attacker.

Pentti Koivuniemi it is enough to stop an attacker especially if the Good Guys trained so if the shooters aiming on the right and the good guy with the gun is on the left you think the shooter's going to have enough time to turn to the good guy with the gun and shoot the good guy before the good guy can pull the trigger not a chance.

Another interesting factoid would have been the percentage of mass shootings where armed civilians were actually present but couldn't/wouldn't/didn't do squat.
0.0% because all mass shooting have happened in gun free zones. The civilians who carry firearms aren't going to carry where it is against the law. However there is a big difference between against the law, and against a business policy.

As an ex-soldier, I've known a _lot_ of people with guns, and most of them play fast and loose with local and state gun laws. And these are people I generally trust not to misuse a firearm, not drunk or stoned dipshits.
Movie theaters, bars, and restaurants often have armed people in them because the only things stopping you from bringing one in is the honor system.

We already have more guns than we have people, so I'm not actually sure adding any extra guns would be helpful in any meaningful way - yet another reason why 'ADD MORE GUNS' is such a confusing potential solution to the gun problem.

first of all, there isn't a license for owning a gun, only for concealed carry. Second of all, owning a gun is a right and driving is a privilege. Third of all, cars are a lot more dangerous than guns for a variety of reasons.
You are right! I mean for a driver's license, you have to take classes for 6 months, driving with a chaperone, can't drive after certain hours, then practice even more by yourself. This involves tests and more than 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice. Then you may drive.

Anyone who does not fear guns is not a responsible gun owner. Same as driving, plenty of people think they are good drivers, but they are often the exact same people who doesn't use turn signals, cuts off traffic, speed, tailgate, and generally operate a car recklessly.
If you think you are a responsible gun owner, then the chances are you are not. Real responsible gun owners always treat their guns like a deadly weapon AT ALL TIMES, never as a toy or a tool or allow themselves to get too comfortable with guns. The irony of course is that the most qualified people to own a gun are not the gun advocates. Anyone can claim to be a responsible gun owner till that one incident where they are not, but it takes dedication to achieve real gun safety.

Wait they didn't mention was how that '3%' isn't even normal civilians as well--the vast majority are almost always off-duty cops, veterans, soldiers that are off-base, etc. Not normal civilians.
You ignore the fact that most of the US doesn't carry and that most shootings happen in gun free zones, which by the way, is for a reason. A defenseless population is easier to kill.

This is basic stuff taught in any self defence course
Also ill just cancel your further point before you make it, yes you are required by law to complete a self defence course to apply for a concealed carry permit and thus people who have concealed carry permits and firearms would know this information already.

In the heat of the moment, can the average person control themself to use or NOT use a gun?
Exactly. A hardened human who wakes up one day and says "fuck it, it's time for death" will not be stopped by gun restrictions. But I don't like the idea of a pissed off driver shooting people in traffic because they're going to get fired for being late to work again. If you can't prove that you're stable enough to not use a weapon in anger and skilled enough to not cause even more damage in a crisis, you don't need a fucking rifle.

Well gun owners tend to be more law abiding then the average person... Something like only 0.009% commit crimes so just because you don't trust yourself with a gun doesn't mean that no one should be allowed to own a gun... If you don't like guns don't get one... Gun owners don't want to fight. .. They definitely don't want to have to shoot someone because it's not fun or cool or anything like that, they then have to go to trail and be in jail while they wait unless they got bail money they lose the gun used because it becomes evidence. .. They get vilified for defending them self and its alot of trouble that they don't need... But they rather be judged because they acted in self defense then dead because they were unarmed and unable to defend themselves

***** This conversation is completely arbitrary lol. I concede, if he was actually granted a concealed carry permit, he probably did take the tests. However, the training he recieved for active shooter situations aren't actually in the training guidelines in Florida.
But let's come to an understand here. Would you grant that it is too easy to get a concealed carry permit? That it should require more training to legally be allowed to carry a firearm in public? Just so you have an idea of how little training concealed carry licensees recieve in Flordia, I'll list the training criteria. The state of Florida only mandates 2.5 total hours of training split between gun safety courses, range time and all classroom testing. Only 2 and a half hours to get a concealed carry license that is valid in 34 states, and it only costs $65 dollars. There are people who may decide that they want to stop a shop lifter by shooting them in the head. There are people who will drink a bit to much and get into a common fist fight, the vast majority of which normally end in very minor cuts and scrapes, and because he or she has a gun he may say that "he feared for his life" and shoot a man in a chest who did not pose an actual threat to his life. There are people who will leave their gun on the table after greasing the barrel, walk away for just a moment to get a glass of water, and not notice their child playing with their accidentally loaded gun until it is too late.
I am not anti-gun. I actually like guns myself, I think going to the shooting range is fun and like president Obama, I fully support the 4 billion dollar program he proposed to encourage safe gun ownership. I do however think that it should be harder to get a gun in this country. This is not to say that I don't think that everyone who wants a gun should have to oppritunity to have them. I just want those people who do want a gun to be trained in exactly how to handle a gun, exactly how to store it so that children will never touch it, I want them to know exactly when it is appropriate to use a gun and more importantly, when it is not. There are so many shootings in this country because people get into a common fist fight and end up shooting their adversary because they do not realize that there is no immediate life threatening danger. I want people to know that even the biggest, most accredited gun training organizations in the country say that in an active shooter event hiding and escaping are the FIRST option, and shooting the attacker is the last. The reason is obvious, police will probably mistake you as the shooter, and when confronted by the shooter if you begin firing without proper training you could very well catch civilians in the cross fire.
Can we at least agree that 2.5 hours of training should not be enough to conceal a weapon in 34 states? I think you are a reasonable enough person to agree with me there.

I had an argument with a friend about this very same topic. He wanted everyone who qualifies for a gun to have one to protect the public from the bad guys. Kinda interesting how having a gun in that simulated school shooting event lead to him being not only being shot by the shooter but also lead him to shooting an unarmed person and also being shot down by the police. Recent events make this all the more relevant. We need to do so,ethimg about the number of guns and how easy it is to get them.
People should only have guns if they are able to complete a hostage situation like they simulated in the right way. If they fail it, go back to training until you pass the test. Yes, 90% would fail and many wouldn't bother to get a gun anymore. But I prefer a tool that can kill a person with bending your finger only to be in the hands of a person that has proven that he/she knows how to handle this equipment the right way and is clear headed enough, too. We only let people drive tons of steel on the street called cars after they have proven to be able to drive and follow the rules, so why not the same with much more dangerous hardware?

No just no. I understand your hypothetical plan has the best of intentions and I respect that, but saving hostages or stopping crimes in progress is not why people have a concealed carry weapon on them in the first place. Hostage rescuing is a job that's best left to the professionals, and 99.9% of the people who carry a gun know that.
Anyone who's permitted to have a concealed carry firearm isn't going to use it to seek out and stop criminals, nor should they be expected to. They carry it to protect their own life or the ones they love and they only draw it if they believe they absolutely have to. Some people do make mistakes and it can be a deeply, unfortunate tragedy if they do. That is, however, why I believe more training should be required and that thorough background checks are always needed. That being said, that doesn't mean you should expect every "good person" with a gun to try and be a "hero" because that's not why people choose to carry.
Most realistic situations where you might find yourself at gun point were easily avoidable if you were being cautious in the first place. It's always going to be your job (and your job alone) to avoid these situations if you possibly could have. However, you shouldn't just expect someone you don't even know to put themselves in a life threatening position just because you're already in one.
Granted, they most likely will help you out if they're present, but understand that they have families who care about them too. So why should this man or woman be obligated to help you out if they might get killed too? If you're asking them to save you just because you've found yourself as a hostage, then that's an extremely dangerous position you're asking them to put themselves in. It's also another ridiculously far fetched situation that the news likes to portray. Even the cops themselves would just call for backup rather than trying to engage it on their own.
Lmao you seriously think people NEED to go through classes and courses to drive a car? They can buy one off a private seller and not show any kind of documentation and go drive a car.
By your logic, 99.99% of all law enforcement wouldn't be allowed to carry guns either. Hell 99.99% of the military as well. Not being able to not complete a hostage situation doesn't mean you're not capable of having a firearm. The two don't even connect. It's like saying only people that can drive through an insane, almost unbeatable obstacle course should be allowed to drive. Even after having all those regulations with vehicles, more people die from them than they do guns.

@Santiago Colla, I agree. So, with that l don't think the solution should be for all of us to have a gun to keep us safer. Those that continue a life long commitment of training should be the ones that should have guns. The chances of a good guy with a gun with lots of training will be higher in stopping a mass shooting compare to a regular gun owner w/o much training. And, unfortunately, most legal gun owners don't want to commit to a life where they are constantly being trained to be safe in a shoot out or mass shooting.

For example, in a lot of states a 18 year old can purchase a gun from a private dealer from their house, in a gun show or online w/o a background check. Federal law only requires background checks for individuals purchasing guns from licenses gun dealers. I understand people want guns to stay safe, but to not have training or any background checks due to this "gun show loophole", is insane! Criminals/ mentally ill individuals can easily purchase gun this way w/o any checks on them. We could still have "safer gun reform improvements" without taking away our 2nd Amendment rights, is all I am suggesting.

My father and I used to have (a LONG time ago) lifetime memberships in the NRA. (Note the past tense.) I used to teach a hunter safety course for them. What they've become now is revolting. Influencing legislation that results in getting a concealed carry permit after answering T/F questions like "Never point a loaded gun up your own butt", and then firing off a couple of clips at a paper target from a distance you could bullseye without ever having held a gun before... not to mention that in spite of the (relatively huge) target area, your shots still hit outside the red...Jesus!

I was born in Northern Ireland and now live in Germany. A funny thing has happened to me more than once that makes me realise the impact growing up during the end of the Troubles did. Now and then bombs are found here in Germany. What that means to a German is that an old undetonated war bomb has been uncovered under the ground and the immediate area needs to be cleared as a precaution while it is carefully and professionally dealt with. When I hear a bomb has been found my immediate thought is some sort of terrorist plot, with a bomb left in a car or on the train and it's meant to hurt people.
Shows me how my way of thinking has been warped by where I lived. I can imagine Americans are similarly warped, though most won't ever realise it unless they live in a foreign country where shootings are not really a thing. They will go through live thinking that's how things are whereas in most of the developed western world it's not.

If a good guy has a gun, and knows how to use it safely and effectively then they can stop a bad guy with a gun. But if the good guy doesn’t know what he’s doing then he juts adds to the problem. I'm from Sweden, and I have to say, that one of the most frightening thing about this piece, is that when learning to shoot, you are actually aiming at a silhouette of a person.... We do have guns here, but mainly for hunting. Firearms are strictly forbidden in public. So when we take courses and earn our gun license, we aim at silhouettes of animals and round paper targets, and we REALLY need to be on point with the aim. Its close to impossible without prior practice.
But proving you can aim with a gun by targeting a silhouette of a person. I mean, come on....

The problem is, that some percentage of the people with carrying permits will always end up committing a crime themselves, having a firearm related accident, enticing the perpetrator to shoot by trying to stop the crime or enabling someone without a permit to gaining access to the legal firearm.
"Good guys with guns" would actually prevent gun violence, if there was a reasonably well established way to determine the part of the population who:
1) Would never use the gun to commit a crime
2) Would never enable someone without a permit to gain access to their gun
3) Would commit to a vigorous training routine
4) Would agree to endanger themselves for the safety of others
Oh wait... that actually sounds a lot like this thing called the law enforcement! Agreed, there will always be corruption, but if vigilante law enforcement actually worked, the romanticization of the wild west should've looked liked the safest era of human history. It's weird that everyone can see the obvious flaws of the system via fiction, but fail to apply the same logic into reality.

Law enforcement has no legal Constitutional requirement to protect citizens even if they can and they just sit and watch. It's been established by courts at every level and all across the country.
If you or I might take the chances and go in and try to help, that just shows that we're better than cops with qualified immunity and no duty to protect.

BTW, the " Wild West" had fewer law enforcement per capita, more guns per capita, less crime per capita than today. I already said you're full of it.

What Jordan Klepper is saying is so true. I have a concealed carry license from Texas.I dont know a thing about guns, how to loads them, types of guns etc etc. I never had a gun, and never will. Basically it was a "party" (kind of) that I was invited to, only it was in a gun range, and we did not drink. They taught us how to load and shoot, they divided us into groups, and I was in the novice group. But that was probably 15 minutes. I dont remember how to load or shoot. They are supposed to lecture for a certain number of hours, they tried to make it as amusing as they could, and in the end they gave us the answers to the questions on the "test" asked by the State. So I can now buy (I wont, but can) a gun, conceal and carry it. I guess, down here, my 2A right trumps your right to live. I mean, Texas would probably argue that had the framers of the constitution thought the right to life is important, they would have put it in the first amendment, rather than in the preamble; and SCOTUS would agree.
