Hey Tom, thanks for the videos, I have been watching some over and over, I’m 15 years old and would love to work in the same field as you do, any tips or advice to get me started? And do I have to go to college to be a zookeeper?
@@jax7200 Hey firstly thanks for watching the videos!! If you haven’t already then check out this one th-cam.com/video/QKQHAMuFEng/w-d-xo.html where I give you some tips on what you need to be a Zookeeper. I will be make a video more specifically on what you should do to become one in the future. You don’t have to go to college BUT there is some great animal colleges that will teach you all the basics of animal care, husbandry and they will also be able to put you in contact with zoos to do work experience and volunteering. Check out the other video and if you have anymore questions then feel free to leave me another comment!
So yes, watched that video, the main thing I would say that would be a struggle for me is “loving” poop, and people skills, but I definitely think I should volunteer when I can, but I think I have to wait until 2022, at least that is what the website for teen volunteers says for my local zoo says www.indianapoliszoo.com/jobs-volunteer/zoo-teen-volunteers/ I think this link will bring you to the website
I miss being at a zoo so badly. I interned for two years while I was working my full-time job, and it's been killing me that I can't go back because of the pandemic. I've been thinking about stepping into keeping professionally (I'm so tired of industry), but most AZA zoos don't seem to care about my hours because they were all unpaid. Demoralizing, but I persevere. I'll never forget how fun it was to play Pokémon Go with the keepers back in the golden days. I swear half the people there got into keeping and curating because they played Pokémon when they were kids... Man, you're making me so nostalgic and this was only like two years ago.
Thank you so much for watching im hoping to upload more videos soon just soo busy at the moment! I find that strange that they won't count volunteer hours, generally in the UK we see volunteering as great experience as shows your willing to work hard without being paid. Of course actual experience as a paid zookeeper will always count for more but the volunteering aspect should always be considered. Dont give up keep going! and maybe look for internships!!
Is it a good career I’m not going to college instead deciding on whether to do an animal care apprenticeship. I hear a lot that the pay isn’t great, do you think the job is worth it I like animals and want to do something like this with my life but I feel really conflicted I’m 19 leaving college soon to start an animal apprenticeship maybe.
Great video! I want to be a zookeeper when I'm older, what classes should I take in high school? Sadly my school doesn't have any nature related clubs or after school activities. Also what degree do you need? -American here lol
@@baetree4645 yes we do, all you will need is the what the government state a foreign person should have to work in this country. (I’m unsure of what this is sorry) but there is plenty of zookeepers in the UK that are from other countries 😊
Hi! I have a few questions about being a zookeeper: Do you work on weekends? What is the worst thing about the job? When do you usually come home? Do you have enough time to do other things? (for example hobbies, stuff that you like, taking care of a pet (if you have one) How much money do you get for a month? I'm sorry for these all questions, and if you're not comfortable answering some of these, I get it! But please amswer atleast some questions!😁
