The German army used the Panzer, or Panzerkampfwagen, as a series of battle tanks in the 1930s and 1940s. From 1934 until the end of World War II in 1945, the six tanks of the series accounted for nearly all of Germany's tank output. Throughout the conflict, panzers supplied the striking power of Germany's panzer (armored) divisions.
The Treaty of Versailles prevented the German army from employing tanks in the years after World War I. However, once Adolf Hitler took power in 1933, the army proceeded to rebuild its tank units, first surreptitiously and then publicly from 1938 forward. This late return to tank production gave the German army an advantage, as it entered World War II without being burdened by a glut of obsolete tanks, as France, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union were. In late 1933, the German army began providing specifications for their first tank, the Pz. I, and in the next three years, requirements for types II through IV were released.
The Pz. I was a light tank used to train new panzer divisions until the more powerful Pz. II, III, and IV tanks were ready for duty. In 1934, the Pz. I was put into production. It was weakly armed, with two 7.92mm machine guns positioned atop the turret, and it was also lightly defended, with only 15 mm of armor. The tank weighed 5.4 tons, had a peak speed of 39 km/h (24 mph), and was operated by a two-person crew. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), the Pz. I saw action for the first time. The German army utilized a modified variant, the IB, in considerable numbers during the invasions of Poland (1939) and France (1939). (1940). Because it was utilized in massed formations and because opposing troops used antitank weaponry ineffectively, the weakly armed and armored IB fared admirably in these conflicts. The IB's susceptibility to small artillery and stronger opponent tanks had rendered it obsolete for any purpose save reconnaissance by the time Germany attacked the Soviet Union in 1941. A total of 2,000 Pz. IBS was produced, with about 1,450 serving in the 1940 war against France.
Although the Pz. II was bigger, more heavily equipped, and armored than the Pz. I, it remained a light tank. Despite this, owing to delays in the production of the more powerful Pz. III and IV remained the basis of the panzer divisions during the first two years of the war. In 1937, the Pz. II was put into full production. It was armed with a 20mm cannon and a machine gun and had armor with a maximum thickness of 30 mm. The tank weighed ten tons, had a peak speed of 40 kilometers per hour (25 miles per hour), and was operated by a three-person crew. In each of the invasions of Poland, France, and the United Kingdom, the German army utilized around 1,000 Pz. I. By early 1942, however, Soviet and British tanks equipped with 50- or 75-mm guns had decisively outgunned the Pz. II. To compensate, the IIF version of the tank was fitted with a bigger gun and stronger armor, but its combat performance in Russia and North Africa was unsatisfactory, largely due to the tank's increased weight, which its six-cylinder engine couldn't handle. The Pz. II was produced until the end of 1942 when its design limits were reached. More than 3,500 Pz. I was produced, with the latter variants being built primarily for reconnaissance.
The Pz. III was Nazi Germany's first medium tank, but it did not enter active duty in substantial numbers until 1939. The Pz. III was equipped with a 37mm antitank gun and two machine guns from the outset. It weighed around 20 tons, could travel at a peak speed of 40 kilometers per hour (25 miles per hour), and had a crew of five. In the Polish war, around 100 Pz. IIIs fought, and 350 in the invasion of France. By 1941, it was clear that additional firepower and protection were needed, thus subsequent variants were equipped with a 50-millimeter cannon and 30-50 mm thick armor. Because it featured a bigger turret and a 12-cylinder, 300-horsepower engine, the Pz. III could accept these enhancements.
The 1,500 Pz. IIIs that participated in the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union outperformed most Soviet tanks but were entirely outclassed by the new Soviet T-34, which had a devastating 76.2-mm cannon, sloping armor, and great speed and mobility. Even Pz. IIIs with a high-velocity 50mm gun and 50-70 mm thick armor couldn't handle the T-34, therefore the tanks were retired from the Eastern Front in 1942, but they continued to combat in the Mediterranean theater until 1943. Around 5,660 Pz. IIIs had been manufactured by the time manufacturing was terminated early that year.
Despite being designed as an infantry support tank, the Pz. IV (together with the Pz. V, which is described below) served as the backbone of Germany's panzer divisions from 1943 until 1945. The Pz. IV had a bigger turret and cannon, stronger frontal armor, and superior cross-country mobility than the Pz. III.
It was armed with a 75mm cannon and two machine guns and had armor varying from 30 to 80 mm thick. It weighed 25 tons, could travel at a peak speed of 40 kilometers per hour (25 miles per hour), and had a crew of five. The first Pz. IVs, equipped with a short-barreled cannon, entered service in 1939 and were exceedingly effective until late 1941 when they were met by Soviet T-34 tanks. To counter this danger, the Pz. IV was redesigned with heavier armor and a long-barreled, high-velocity cannon that could breach the T-34'sarmor.
The enhanced Pz. IV could compete with the T-34 on virtually equal terms and be superior in many ways to the Sherman tank from the United States. During the war, Germany's only tank was the Pz. IV, which was produced from 1939 until 1945. The Pz. IV was the most prolific of all German tanks, with over 8,000 constructed. Its low-cost, mass-produced chassis, like that of its three forerunners, served as a basis for numerous antitank, assault, and self-propelled weapons, as well as unarmored personnel carriers.
Germany had been experimenting with heavy tanks since 1935, but once German medium tanks confronted Soviet T-34s in late 1941, their efforts took on new importance. The Pz. V, or Panther, was out of a hasty effort to build a tank that would include the T-34's advanced characteristics. It went into production in November 1942 and entered active duty soon after. The Panther was possibly the best tank developed by any country throughout the war, except for the T-34.
It was a hefty vehicle at 45 tons, but a 12-cylinder, 700-horsepower engine allowed it to attain a peak speed of 45 kilometers (28 miles) per hour on the road, and an exceptional suspension system allowed it to cross country with uncommon ease for a German tank. The Panther's armor was slanted so that rounds would ricochet off it, and its long-barreled, high-velocity 75-mm gun had good range and penetrating capability against most opposing tanks.
The Panther's combat debut at the Action of Kursk (July 1943) did not go well: transmission, suspension, and cooling-system issues brought most of the tanks to a standstill before they even got to the battle zone. Panthers functioned with remarkable success on both the Eastern and Western fronts once these flaws were fixed. During the Normandy battle, they were particularly successful against American Sherman tanks and British Cromwell tanks in northern France, while they remained vulnerable to Allied aircraft attacks. During the conflict, around 5,000 Panthers were constructed. The Pz. VI, or Tiger, was Germany's final and biggest tank of the conflict. The Tiger, like the Panther, was rushed to market in reaction to the Soviet T-34. It was first used in action in great numbers in Kursk, just like the Panther, in August 1942. The Tiger pushed the German predilection for firepower and survivability above speed, agility, range, and dependability to an extreme. Its long-barreled, high-velocity 88-mm gun, developed from the Germans' deadly antiaircraft (Flak) and antitank (Pak) guns, could pierce even the most highly armored Soviet tanks at long distances.
The Tiger's frontal armor was 100 mm thick and could withstand practically any antitank gun, while the sides and rear armor were 60-80 mm thick. The tank's large cannon and strong armor, on the other hand, severely limited its mobility. The early Tigers weighed around 55 tons, but the Tiger II, launched in 1944, weighed 70 tons, making it the war's heaviest tank. The Tiger's peak road speed was 38 kilometers per hour (24 miles per hour), but it could only go cross-country at roughly 20 kilometers per hour (12 miles per hour). The Panther had a range of 100 to 200 kilometers (60 to 120 miles), the Tiger needed refueling after only 70 to 110 km (45 to 70 miles) of travel, and it was prone to breakdowns and was difficult to maintain.
As a result, the Tiger tank was best suited to a defensive duty in which speed and agility were not critical. During the Normandy battle, light-armored Sherman tanks sustained heavy casualties against Tigers, but the Allies rapidly learned to use their superior numbers and agility to successfully assault Tigers from the side and rear. Only roughly 1,340 Tiger tanks had been manufactured before Germany stopped producing them in August 1944 due to their problematic manufacturing.
