    thats an example of freedom of speech. these guys can speak the truth.. and not even that, the show runs on a public service broadcasting channel, the government kinda makes sure that this can exist (thanks to the Brit Hugh Greene, who established that system after WW2). usually they mock our own government, but also world relevant topics like this one

      Exactly this. That is why this public service broadcast channels are so important! Of course they also have their own scandals (like corrupt intendants acting in their own financial interests), but structures have enough checks and balances fortunately to uncover such incidents and self-heal via reforms and continuous improvements. Those who want to abandon public broadcast with populist paroles just because it is not 100% flawless are the true enemies of free speech and democracy.

    ‚Die Anstalt‘ means Asylum and Claus von Wagner (on the left) and Max Uthoff (the „American“ on the right) are the 2nd generation who host this show since 2014.
    Max Uthoff by the way was a lawyer before he became a comedian. That explains the lawyer joke at 0:53 min.
    It started as ‚Neues aus der Anstalt‘ (News from the Asylum) in 2007 where the scene was an asylum and the host (Urban Priol) was the head oft the asylum and the guests (other comedians/satirists) played the role of psychiatry's inmates because the things they said seems to sound so insane that it can’t be real.
    But in reality it’s all the ‚insane‘ political truth

    • @thetaleteller4692
      @thetaleteller4692 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Some more context: In addition of "Anstalt" in meaning of Asylum, it is also part of the term "Fernsehanstalt" referring to "public television broadcaster". The station (ZDF) is similar to BBC in UK.

      @christophhenninger6440 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@technoscout Thats a myth pretty sure. "Die Anstalt" derived from "Neues aus der Anstalt" which started in 2007. People from the ZDF refer their station internally as "Anstalt" as a running gag between a madhouse and "Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts" (tv station in public property). Migration was not a huge topic back then. Already in his first episode they got their knighthood by the presence of "Dieter Hildebrandt", one of the sharpest minds political cabaret of Germany has ever seen. Also to mention from back then, "Georg Schramm", he was the best when the audience stopped laughing - while the shock of truth was setting in.

  • @RageDavis
    @RageDavis ปีที่แล้ว +97

    "Anstalt" in German has two meanings, that are partly relatet:
    The first one is an institution which is sponsored by the state and taking care of matters of public concern: road savety, workspace safety, telecommunication.
    The second meaning is more in the lines of a mental asylum (which might be as well sponsored by the state).
    From my point of view, the name of the pregramm has bben chosen with this in mind.

    • @tisamon4070
      @tisamon4070 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      At the start when Priol and Schramm were the showrunners they leaned heavily into the asylum direction. With Priol posing as director of the asylum, Schramm as patient representative.
      The new one, which he reacts to, is more flexible in it's setting to tell a story.

If I ask myself if there could be a reason why they are found especially in Germany, I could imagine that it's probably because Germany was less envolved in wars in the last decades making it easier to think (and even make jokes) about their background.

      define change.
      elections do change a lot, when the system isnt completely geared towards making the rich richer yet.
      satire doesnt change anything quickly, but it reminds its viewers of the actual goings on behind the pr, it keeps them skeptical of the politicians, and thus influences how they vote, what protests they join, who they support politically in general, and sometimes it makes or breaks political leaders like in ukraine, where zelensky first had a satire show parodying the ukrainian political landscape, and then actually became president. sounds like a lot of change to me.

      In 1986 a satire show was banned by Bavarian TV because it was about the accident in Tchernobyl. The Bavarian governor was Franz Josef Strauß and he was a huge fan of nuclear power.
      So some shows have been banned in the past, also in east Germany, today no politician could do that or face a huge shitstorm.
      Today, such a show could not be stopped anymore because it would be uploaded on youtube immediately and everybody could see it. That's why dictators like in China hate the internet and try to regulate it.

    Fan of watching "Die Anstalt" long time
    So first what I can tell you, it started as cabaret experiment, to give cabaret a bigger place and more public. And very succesfully. They always have 2 hosts (the 2 guys there) and some guests and nearly all of them were high profile comedians or other cabaretists. Also "Die Anstalt" as title is a joke in itself as it means "The Asylum".
    In this specific video, it does not show, but both play out a scenario and Max Uthoff (the man with the cylinder) plays the americans, while Klaus von Wagner (the other guy) obviously explains everything. It was a bigger part in the whole episode and came up several times again. Both by the way also very good in their job as well, like Volker Pispers. Can recommend many of their videos. but sadly only few with english subtitles.

    The only thing recounts of this gloss over is the whole "the CIA installed the Shah as a dictator". Technically, that Shah was already the king of Iran during Mosaddegh's rule, but at that point had become more of a symbolic figurehead. The CIA ousted Mosaddegh to bring the Shah into full power. Also, the U.S. and other world powers could've easily helped to prevent the Ayatollah's rise and keep the Shah in power...but this was right when the Shah got the idea to nationalize Iran's oil fields like Mosaddegh before him, so he too had to go. And the Western powers thought the Ayatollah would be an easier puppet to control. Except he went and nationalized the oil fields anyway and made relations between Iran and the West way worse than either the Shah or Mosaddegh before him.

    Nowadays, "Die Anstalt" (previously "Neues aus der Anstalt") is the gold standard of political satire on German TV. We definitely have a lot of great comedians in Germany, both in the entertainment/humour department as well as the more "serious" socio-political satire. But with Volker Pispers and "Die Anstalt" you already picked the greatest of the great. "Die Anstalt" is known for very well researched and fact-checked, hard political satire with a touch of comedy thrown in to make it less dry. Since Max Uthoff and Claus von Wagner (the guys from this clip) took over the show in 2014 they always have a theme for each episode. They always have about 3 guests and do a lot of ensemble play, weaving together a narrative around the topic. And in nearly every episode they do one of their infamous white board sketches like the one you just saw. Sometimes they have special guests in the show, ie. people affected by the topic like refugees or handicapped people.

      I'd be carefull with "absolute" truth. It's probably not factually wrong and it shows a different perspective than what we are used to hear. It paints a more complete picture in contrast to the usual narrative, but not on it's own. They summarized 60 years highly complicated history of half a continent into a 10 minutes joke. That's as simplified as it get's.
      It's a political narrative, not a history class.

The Anstalt is not any less onedimensional than all the other political format and I don't see them pretending like this is meant to be taken seriously. They just happen to be funny and likable unlike other political formats.
      Being against the main stream, when the main stream is questionably biased, doesn't make this any more objective, just differently biased.

Nice to know, Max Uthoff (what play the USA in this clip) is also an examinated jurist, the other one, Claus von Wagner, is "Magister Artium" (master of arts).
    The Anstalt (what means a mental hospital) also showed the aggressiv expansion of EU and NATO (and the role of the "Atlantik-Bruecke") to the east and close to the russian border, long before russia starts the war to Ukrain. Sad, can't find this episode (from April 29, 2014) with engl. subtitles. Parts of this show were once censored by interim injunction.

    "Die Anstalt" and similar formats in Germany are not what you would call simple "comedy", but politically and socially very critical and fact-based "satire/political cabaret" and that's a very big difference in Germany, of course it's sometimes "evil" humor, because it's supposed to be entertaining, otherwise nobody will ever watch it.

My comment about “human rights” was meant to imply that although the U.S. have, like many other nations, have ratified the human rights declaration of the U.N. in the fifties (or was it the sixties, I don’t recall), yet, they still - in many states, have and apply the death penalty. I mean, this - and the various civil rights issues - were one of the reasons for the civil rights movement. When black soldiers returned to America from fighting in WW II, they realized how they were still treated like a subhuman species in many walks of life. And as far as the current state of things is concerned, don’t forget that women have currently less civil rights and rights to physical autonomy than a corpse does. Been watching geopolitics and global issues for 30-40 years now. This thing keeps repeating and only few can see through the context and recognize false information spread, narrative distortion and media manipulation. I saw that in Iran, former Yugoslawia, Ukraine and in many other countries. Since I am multi-culturally upbringing (my parets countries, country of upbringing and current residence...) I see the different kinds of indoctrinations countries all around the world perform on their populace in school, in media and in newspapers for different IQ kinds of audiences.
    It is always the same, then you argue the war in Iran is not about terrorism, democracy whatever, but about geopolitics, economy and oil, just to be disregarded as a conspiracy theorist and idiot. Then a few years later the same happens elsewhere and it keeps repeating... and every time the bulk of the populace thinks 'this time it is real and plausible'.
    Aslso watched the Taiwan conflict closely and Ukraine... and it is always the same... spin up narrative... and as long as one can convince the majority of the polulation about the narrative, it will be fine - and later nobody can change anything back, even if they realized the truth.
    I fact-check a lot as a hobby using video feeds, google maps and original sources. It is insane how the truth is warped and falsified, but the voters still believe it. The USA can do whatever they want and nobody in the west has the possibility of doing anything against it. And most evidence is also supressed by shadow bans and the like.
