Surprisingly, this was one of my most controversial videos to date. Honestly I had no idea the original video would cause such a stir. After reading through the comments on the last video and the comments over at my forum I decided to make this video answering to many of your concerns. I hope this video helps clear the air and we can move on. Here are the links that were mentioned in the video.

I found this video while searching for a video on installing an HID kit and I've watched this video before watching the installation video which came before, and prompted this video. I subscribed based on this video and now will go watch your installation video. What a cool, level headed, helpful guy. I have not yet read any of the comments on the installation video but obviously I have an idea what those comments are and how you have addressed them already. Peace and thanks.

You know, its funny. I installed 6000K HIDs in my (now dead) Buick Regal on the Low Beam. Never aimed the headlights, And I never really had people point their High Beams at me. Maybe one, or two but never 5 in one night. I've seen people with these retrofits, never noticed it blinding me either. Now the ACTUAL pojectors? Heck yes, I cant begin to tell you how many times I'm blinded by BMWs, Mercedes or any other stupid car with those projectors.

I’m thinking about getting either 4300K or 5000K for my Buick. And yeah, those BMWs drive me crazy. I’m hoping my 4300Ks won’t be too bad. I’m also getting new housings that work better with HIDs.

Most of the time your getting flashed because you have hid's. Not because the driver is being blinded. I am yet to see someone sent careening into a ditch because they were blinded by my lights.
I've seen projectors and reflector housings with hids. I have them in stock housings. Projectors are more blinding than reflectors. Most of the time your on a hill and the cutoff rises up in peoples faces anyways. And that's a concentrated beam. I could take a wild guess who ever bitches about these being bright do not own a set themselves and therefore do not carry a valid opinion in my eyes. The beam can be aimed in a reflector housing just as in a projector.

    • @Silvertarian
      @Silvertarian 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep as long as you know what your doing you'll be fine. The only problem is these light are very popular and everyone buys them. So you get some stupid kid in high school who had his mom buy hid and projectors for his Honda now he thinks he's an expert on hid's.

Thanks for the follow up video, I want to install an HID kit on the fog lights for my Volvo XC70. The information that you have provided in this video is very helpful in selecting the best kit; especially the bulb selection. I notice that you have a video for fog lamp conversion so I'll be watching that too.

  • @singcheong1

Very informative, correct, and useful. Addressed a lot of confusion for HID light conversion kit. 2 key points that I almost miss when choosing/installing HID are (1) adjust light (2) in foggy or snowing day, lower Kelvin temperature light works better (closer to 5,000K). Your videos is always my favorite. I have been a Japanese car DIY for 10 years to repair my own family's car, and always refers to your video. Thanks a lot

I was the one who commented about the rain. I'm glad you got some experience with it. I've been installing these kits since 2001. They all have the same issue with Kelvin temperature and rain. You did a great install and very informative video. Also remember that the first HID systems were installed on reflective housings. Sure the tech has progressed, but that doesn't make the reflector any less useful.

Hey Eric, I watch a lot of your videos and I love it, mainly because you do things where many professionals out there would do and your explanations are good and detailed.
I'm a headlight person too. I do headlights retrofit as part time and read a lot about headlights for the pass whole year. I'm still learning and I know some headlight fellas can be a little harsh sometimes.
We have forums and fb groups which we only talk only about headlights related stuffs. We try to educate those new comers but sometimes people just think 8000k is so cool I'm gonna put in my halogen reflector and blind everyone and that annoys us. You however give very good explanation on your installation and we do appreciate it.
There is actually HID on reflector housing that comes factory fitted which is legal and safe to the other motorists. Don't get me wrong. I always prefer HID on projector, but usually people out there just plug and play HID on their ride and did not made proper adjustment like you did, and that really annoys everyone.
Anyhow, you did a great job there Eric and I'll keep supporting your videos. Cheers!

Hadn't seen your videos on this when you made them, but your my "go to guy" for car info so I did a search and found your RE: video on the subject. Answered all my questions! Also great comment on when pointing a finger at someone you still have three pointing back at yourself! SO many people think the anonymity of the internet allows them to be as nasty as they want. Great RE video Eric. You are so right about the importance of properly aiming the headlights after installing the HID kit. I forgot to aim mine the first time I installed HIDs in reflector housings and got flashed by on-coming drivers quite a bit on the first drive out. The next day I adjusted them properly and since then I've never been flashed again.

Great Re: video. I had a few of the concerns others had commented about, but you did a nice job addressing those. An issue I had read with respect to putting HIDs in any halogen housing, including projectors, is that the light from the bulb emanates from a slightly different spot. This can affect the focus of the reflections. However, when I checked out this kit an the website, I read it uses that adapter to position the bulb in such a way that the source is in the same location. Good kit!

Eric, let the haters hate, they always did and always will. The world can't exist without hate (unfortunately). But your work is epic. I don't say you are the best mechanic in the world- I can't know that obviously, for 2 reasons:
    1. I don't understand much of car repairs
    2. I dont't know every mechanic.
But I am 99.9% sure that there is no other like you from the point of view - a person who helps and shares what he can do with other people, and you save us, the viewers, a lot of money and trouble (regarding to having troubles with bad mechanics who charge you and break your car). Again haters will say, you do it only for the wining money from your channel. Well, first you have to earn something from what you do- you put a lot of efford and invest much time in these clips. Second, most of your very helpful videos are for free (for us) so this is a win-win situation ... and much more can be said but I think i made my point. Keep the good and helpful videos.
P.S. Sorry, for my english - Greetings from Bulgaria!

Absolutely fantastic job Eric. A lot of people get annoyed by the scatter pattern because some other HID's that aren't bi-xenon or h4 bulbs are installed without the headlight protector/cover. That can cause a much worse scatter pattern but with that cover it's absolutely fine. I have a similar install with crystal white (6000k i believe) bulbs, aimed slightly lower than normal and bi-xenon with the protector/cover. Gives much better illumination but doesn't blind oncoming traffic, never flashed

    Hi Eric
I have couple of question for you. I recently installed HID on my 2005 Volvo S60, a straight install with no harness/ relay, it worked for couple of days, then flickers a bit for a while, and then total shut down, no lights on the headlights. Alright, after testing them I found out I found the ballast were bad, while waiting for the new ballast, I also ordered an harness with it (after doing some research.) I put halogen on, my driver side didn't want to come on even with brand new light bulbs, checked the fuse, checked the relay, even took it to the local mechanic, and even he can't figure out. I even purchased a new driver headlight to try it out, and still nothing. Have you heard anything this.
Second question. After receiving the harness, I installed it with a anti-flicker capacitor whatever is called, after the entire installation, it worked for couple of days, and then total shut off. I tested again, it fried the ballast again. I went through almost 2 pair of HID kits. Do you have any idea what is causing this ?

I live in Houston, Texas and I have 8k HID's for the low and 3,000k for the fogs on all 3 vehicles and pretty much everyone has HIDs here. So far no problems at all with other drivers. I have to say HID's are best in projectors then halogen housing but that's my opinion.

i like that the kit you were given came with quality metal cutoffs. 99% of the kits for sale come with out them or people do not know to purchase them separately. where i am at people blind me with those 20 dollar kits installed in halogen reflector housings and no bottom cut offs.

Been watching your vids for years and always found them useful and interesting. Why is it that you do videos in order to support the learning of others which I feel is a selfless act and there are these individuals who seem to have nothing better to do or need to stroke their own egos and superior intelligence by having a go at people who's only interest is to help others. I do have concerns about badly fitted lights especially here in the UK where there seems to have been a selfish shift in drivers to a sod you attitude, however if lights are fitted correctly and respectfully then I have no issues. Keep going mate Cheers from the UK

I have to congratulate you on this video response. You are a very civilized and intelligent person with great character. I haven't noticed the cover-plate and that can make all the difference. All the kits I saw here in Portugal don't use that and just scatter light blinding all the incoming drivers.
One important thing you forgot to say is that the light output is measured in lumen and the higher the kelvin, the less the lumen(light quantity) output. Continue the excellent work!

I commend you Eric on standing by your install of HID kit. The people who bash the kits do so on forum after forum thinking that everyone who does this are 18 year old Civic drivers who slap in HID kits without aiming them. Keep up the great vids, Eric.

You then went on to mention that you were thinking of changing the bulbs to the 5300K type.
Anyway, keep up the good work my friend.

To those who are finding fault in Eric's selfless good work. Please know that no one is perfect and at the least see that he has good intentions which make the errors if any trivial. Lets cheer him up for the good work and thank you Eric keep up the good work

Hey Eric great Vid!- just wanted to add some fyi: Not all HIDs use projectors - for instance the altima uses a factory xenon system which incorperates reflector bowls. Also, not all projectors properly project a xenon bulb. While a halogen re/pro assembly is designed to handle the rectangular filament, the xenon re/pro is designed to handle the circular xenon capsule. This is where scattered light comes from!

Eric, I recently installed 5k HIDs on my car and I must say they are good in inclement weather along with putting out a good color/illumination balance. However, if you decide to get a fog lamp kit, go with 3k bulbs for the fog lamps. They put out a pure yellow light that works the best for cutting through rain, fog, and snow.

That cool how the light is reflected. Where I live we have a lot of steep hills which sometimes make it see like high beams are on regardless of headlight type.

I think many of us learned something new about kelvins and how it relates to light from this video. Thank you ETCG! Some of us need to learn how to disagree without being offensive. It is possible to point out an incorrect fact without attacking someone. You have also demonstrated that skill. Your channel is an asset to many. You should be proud of the work you are doing.

I put 6000k kit on my truck and they work and look great. I love them... It is a full size 4x4 with 33" tires, so it sits high, the only time I get bright lighted is from very small or lowered cars and it is no more than I was used to with the regular halogens.

Eric, if you have problems with the 8000K bulb when it comes in rain/fog. I suggest the 6000K, my friend actually use this type and it is more almost like daylight, but with a very very slight tint of blue but mostly white. I myself have HID headlights and fogs, 8000K and 3000K respectively on my RSX and I love them. Oh and thanks for your very informative videos. Keep it up Eric.

Where did you buy your retainers for your HID's? Do they have them for 9007 bulbs?

  • @AndroidTech023

I'm sure no matter what you do you'll have the potential to blind oncoming traffic cause of the type of bulb. Even vehicles with Factory HID headlights blind oncoming traffic cause it's a brighter bulb, and not all vehicles have that projector housing and just use standard headlight housing. But the projection headlight housings do add character to a vehicle and I think they look awesome. Especially the Angel Eyes HID headlight housings and bulbs.
Some newer vehicles have that dedicated housing, some don't. It really depends on the vehicle, or if the owner wants to spend more money on a different headlight housing and assembly, so just a thought. I like the look of the projector housing. Great video, keep up the good work. Thanks for info on HID's

It's quite true as u say, The type of lights the Element has it generally produces a glare especially in rainy weather, when compared wit projector lights. But it is always good to have proper lights to see at nights, that's something I love, but remember Consideration.
I love the installation video, I didn't know u only need one light socket. Ur a nice guy to work wit, straight up. I've learned a lot from u, u help me to be a better Mechanic and u ain't even know it.
