    Personally, I'm not interested in mobile VR right now. My concerns are entirely on desktop PC, HOWEVER, I think people need to realize how massive the mobile market is and how easy it is to buy in. There are billions of people who own smartphones. BILLIONS.
    I want VR to succeed and a great way to provide an instant flow of revenue for start-up VR companies, developers and publishers alike, is to first embrace mobile VR and target all of the consumers in that market. Let that be a gateway drug into desktop PC VR where the experiences can be much more engaging and deep.

      You were wrong lol. PCVR was always just a temporary stop-gap. It, like all "tethered-only VR" was doomed right from Day 1. Standalone was ALWAYS the inevitable future and John Carmack saw that immediately. 🤷

    I want the consumer Rift already and I'm not alone. If mobile VR is not helping the development of Oculus Rift consumer version, fuck mobile VR.

    • @Kashaku3
      @Kashaku3 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      apocalypseap give it time. they don't want their first consumer version to have a major flaw.

    • @apocalypseap
      @apocalypseap 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kashaku3 Of course, but they should be allocating their resources towards the product they promised as their absolute number 1 priority. They have a lot of money to work with.

    • @Kashaku3
      @Kashaku3 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel you on that, but this is what carmack is most passionate about at the moment. I'm sure the development and testing of what will be the consumer rift is going in full throttle behind the scenes at oculus. The whole mobile thing has alot to do with publicity and getting VR on the heads of people who don't have a powerful computer. I understand what they're doing. Putting their most technical engineer (Carmack) in the field of mobile (more complex and less understood than PC VR) is just logical. I mean a vast majority of the discoveries in either field with benefit the other. Give it time and they will push each other to their limits.

    • @Kashaku3
      @Kashaku3 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically mobile right now has the ability to give "billions" of people a taste of whats to come and make them a believer for when shit REALLY hits the fan. Also to help wash out that 90s VR taste so many people still had in their mouth. I don't disagree with it. But yeah I still want a rift like really really really bad

    • @Kashaku3
      @Kashaku3 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The more people know about and can experience even the simplest of modern VR will help the VR industry as a whole. More developers will be on board which means more content at a faster rate.

    ..Kinda wish Oculus would focus on getting PC-VR down first, before working on mobile stuff. Mobile will always be behind PC, in it's abilities.. Sadly, they got themselves into all sorts of partnership deals with other companies, which are forcing them to do this. Sure, Carmack likes working on the mobile side, but that really should have waited a bit, till PC-VR was nailed, and out for consumers.
    They're stretching themselves too thin, and things are taking waaay too long. (6 months or a year ago, I would have told myself to shut up and stop being entitled, but we're long past the reasonable amount of time this should have taken.)

      Shade Draws If it doesn't come out this year, they're done.

    • @ShadeWMD
      @ShadeWMD 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      apocalypseap I don't think so, personally. You have to remember, the VAST majority of the world knows absolutely dick about virtual reality or Oculus. If the Rift came out in 5 years it would still be many months before casual consumers even knew it existed. They're not waiting for it because they don't know it's a thing in development.
      For us enthusiasts, I know that we're chomping at the bit to get one, but most people don't care about VR and won't until a headset comes out and people can try one.
      I'm getting a Vive but am also getting a Rift, whenever the first consumer version drops.

    • @apocalypseap
      @apocalypseap 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shade Draws Exactly my point. Everyone who cares about VR will just be too jaded to even bother with such a release date for the Oculus Rift and they'll find it hard to get any new people to care about it when it releases, so they will have screwed themselves.

    • @ShadeWMD
      @ShadeWMD 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      apocalypseap I think it's just impatient people wanting to lash out. The second the consumer Rift drops, all of those people will buy one.
      No one should be rushing Oculus. They should be encouraging them to take their time and get their product right. I don't think VR will get a third chance.
      If Oculus drops the ball it could threaten the entire industry.
      It's like all the people who said that they'd never buy GTA V on PC for... reasons... and it's selling like gangbusters. People like to lash out but when the product is there, they buy. It's fine to voice your enthusiasm for a product but I also believe in rational consumerism and waiting for the product to be right and not be first.

  • @Jonny2myren
    @Jonny2myren 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Enough with this mobile crap - get the freaking CV of the Rift out. If people have the option of getting the Vive this year or wait indefinitely for the Rift, which one do you think the vast majority will choose?
    Sub-par mobile VR is only going to alienate people from the technology when they try it and think that the less-than-great experience is anywhere close to what proper headsets connected to capable PC's can give you.

  • @RayR
    @RayR 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Definitely not into the mobile VR scene. It's good to hear John speak on it but it's definitely disappointing that his genius isn't being directed to the PC more. A shame. I'll take a break from checking the VR news so much. Maybe Sony and Valve will come through sooner. I don't think I want a PC VR program that was targeted at mobile first and then as a second thought ported to a PC. Even my older PC rig easily outperforms mobile and tablets. Targeting mobile primarily is clear fallout from the Facebook buyout. To me mobile is the quick grab for money.
    VR is not going away even if it was developed for PC. The market would still grow just not as fast. VR is an inevitable technology. VR gives the end user immersion and immersion is a fundamental tenet of what people want whether they know it or not. To say VR will go away because the current PC VR experience is sub par and like the 90's experience doesn't make sense. It's SO much beyond that already. Most people have loved the experience. This is a PC quality vs Facebook mobile quantity debate.
