Obviously Paula feeds people more than humming birds so calm down everyone! The red coloring has been an ingredient in bird food for those feeders for decades & some birdies do just fine with the red coloring. Some will become protective over the feeder & only allow certain birds to feed. The protective birds will stay around all season never showing signs of illness. It's better to use natural, obviously but it's gonna be ok!!! 🐦 🐥 ok chickadees it's all ok!

It is not ok. It can make them sick. Our newspaper just today said it's time to put the feeders out. Said, NO DYE, no commercial products. Even my newspaper reporting. And a world famous cook doesn't know this.

The premade hummingbird food is not good for hummingbirds. You don’t have to use red food coloring to attract them. That is a beautiful hummingbird feeder with lots of beautiful colors on top. The “flowers” on the bottom of the feeder is what the hummingbirds are attracted to. Hummingbirds need lots of sugar. Have a fabulous day all!! 🥰❤️

No red food coloring, it is toxic to the hummingbirds. The ratio's 4:1 for recipe is perfect. I have found the feeders with the yellow flower cups where they suck the water from attracts them best. I have tons of nests and babies year after year. I also have a suction cup on my window that holds a hummingbird feeder so when we sit down to meals or a cup of coffee, they are right there to view and admire..Love to you an your family..

Hi, Ms. Paula, for the last 10 years or so I’ve made my own hummingbird food. In fact, I just made some this morning and put it outside for the birds. Your recipe ratio for sugar and water is correct, 1/4 c. sugar per cup of water. As others have noted, please don’t use the red food coloring. It can be dangerous for the birds. Also, please dump and change out your leftover food every few days or so. The water will get slimy(murky), and more quickly during the hot summer months. Please also take apart and wash the feeder parts with each food change, as they can get slimy(dirty) as well. One final note, if possible please try to use filtered or spring water so as not to give the birds the chemicals from the tap water. Cold water can be used instead to dissolve the sugar, like when preparing Kool Aide, so you really don’t have to heat the water and let it cool before putting it outside in your feeders.

"My Time", yes, I too have been taught to never use food coloring. Monitor the feeder. Fill it so far, so as not to waste the "water". On hotter days change the "water" maybe a little sooner. Have several feeders around your area, which I have found work great. Sometimes hummingbirds don't like to share

    • @mytimeisnow8142
      @mytimeisnow8142 ปีที่แล้ว +1

“pirate1958” Hi!, I actually have 2 feeders spaced about 6 feet apart in an area outside my dining room window that is my designated bird feeder spot in my yard. And yes, you’re right, hummingbirds are very protective of their food and chase each other away from the feeders.
I put only one cup of food in each feeder and the food is usually gone in a few days before the water gets cloudy. So I usually don’t end up wasting much, if any of it.

I just filled a hummingbird feeder that I got from the dollar store and I used a prepared packaged mix. They are no longer using the red die in the mix because they're finding it's not good for the birds.
The package said it would probably take a couple of days for the hummingbirds to find the feeder but they came the first day!😁
There had been a hummingbird hanging around before I put up the feeder so he found the feeder immediately. And I guess he told his friends because more kept coming until we have a nice group hanging around!
For the first time I saw a hummingbird perched perfectly still. We can hear them approaching from the helicopter sounds they make. And we now recognize their happy chirping sounds! ☺️
These little birds are so fascinating and fun to watch! 😘
The reason I got the hummingbird feeder is because they were already hanging around. It's such a pleasure to watch them and be able to feed them! 😚
With all the critters you have on your place, the hummingbirds will be a great addition Paula! 😋
Thanks for sharing this recipe so we can continue to feed the hummingbirds! 🥰

Red food coloring is not necessary for hummingbirds to be attracted to a feeder, and there is some evidence that it may be harmful to them. While there is no definitive proof that red food coloring is harmful to hummingbirds, many experts recommend avoiding it altogether.
The main concern is that the food coloring may contain chemicals that are toxic to hummingbirds, such as Red Dye #40. In addition, some experts believe that the food coloring may disrupt the hummingbird's natural diet and cause them to become dependent on the sugar water in the feeder, which may not provide them with all of the nutrients they need.
To be safe, it is best to avoid using red food coloring in your hummingbird feeder. Instead, you can attract hummingbirds by using a feeder that has red accents or is made from red plastic. You can also plant red flowers in your yard or garden to attract them naturally. And, of course, make sure to keep your feeder clean and filled with fresh sugar water.

My feeder is identical, except for flower colors. Be prepared for the hanger knob to snap off. The feeder is beautiful, but not logical. Giant heavy glass feeder even without liquid, with a tiny thin hanger knob. I used gorilla glue and put mine back together. Went back in the store to buy another one, and saw four more on the shelf with broken knobs. I then opted for the simple plastic ones. Smaller, cheaper to replace, and easier to clean every couple days.
