This must be the most inexplicably underrated - not to mention criminally unknown! - Thin Lizzy song of all time. “The Boys are Back in Town?” Please, this is the REAL SHIT! Keeeerist, that first John Sykes pinch harmonic - at 0:25 seconds - could stop a bull elephant at 500 yards; hair-raising stuff for the ages!
yeah, this is clearly their best track by far. I dont know how songs like 'Jailbreak' and 'The boys are back in town' became so famous when compared to Cold Sweat, which is mainly acknowleged by metal musicians.
John Sykes is a very skilled and experienced guitarrist... Respect for him. And of course... Scott Gorham... those guys are awesome! I am highly influenced by those 2.
Saw John n Scott in 83 on the 'Thunder n Lightening' tour at Gloster Leisure centre. Still one of my all x fave gigs n I even got to touch big Phil's leg! Dunno why I did it but it felt right at the x. What a gig!
Michael Lee died on 24 November 2008 from an epileptic seizure aged 39. He was found dead in his flat and his funeral took place in his hometown of Darlington the following week.(wikipedia):(
Forgot Michael Lee played with lizzy saw him with page plant shows but I regret never seeing John live he is in the the top 10 guitar players list once I saw the slown n easy video he immediately got your attention so cool bluesy with his rapid fire playing intensity of delivery song writing top notch all in one he had it all
I saw them Casey's Golden Pheasant in Billings MT in the early 2000s. I was standing 4 feet from the stage. It is one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. The line up was Sykes, Aldridge, Gorham, and Mendoza. They were all incredible. Check out the live album One Night Only. It came out in 2000 and has that lineup on it along with Wharton on keyboards.
Plz if anyone knows there is a live dvd from any of the Lizzy concerts with Sykes - Please get back to me - totally missed out on this but it´s great!!!
@tutakar there is actually a new 6 piece line up.........Ricky Warwick (the almighty) vocals+guitar.....vivian campbell-guitar....brian downey-drums....darren wharton -keys.....marco mendoza-bass.....scott gorham-guitar.
Anybody ever notice John's always moving his right hand south, checking to make sure his volume control is all the way up? I know because I do it too. :P
It seems neurotic to me. If you checked it once it should be ok. He takes every free moment to slide his hand past the controls. So, it's not a check, it's neurotic behaviour. For the record: I love John Sykes. ;)
To me it IS a little neurotic when I see myself do it on a recording, lol. But it's far less worse than plowing into a lead when and you majorly screw up because the pickup you were using wasn't at maximum gain. It sucks to have to do, but that's the basic thinking behind it.
@lostboysonbikes Even if Scott is the only member in the band from the classic lineup, Thin Lizzy was a milestone in his life, and it was HIS band TOO. You can't tell someone what to do with the remains of his past. I think i would do the same.
where was this recorded at.I seen them in 01 and 02 didn't get to see them in 03 when they opened for Purple.didn't know they played any where near Texas in 04.kool footage though.I have a whole boot video show from the One Night Only tour in 01.Sykes rocks
..somebody wanna tell me whats the deal with futzing around with his controls all the time?..pickups on/off...tone/volume knobs...is it a nervous thing???..for real tho..
I have to agree with Axeman2006. He does make a mistake on the solo when he's hammering on and tries to comes back on track after that. Good to know that even some of the best guitar players make mistakes :)
RIP John..Sad Day 😢 One of the greatest ever
Rip John. This hurts. It was too soon.
Thank you John for keeping this classic song alive, you even sound like Phil.
RIP John Sykes, he was one bad cat on the guitar. 🎉🎉🎉🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I'd pay to see this lineup of Thin Lizzy
I saw this tour...awesome
Rest in paradise John. Your incredible guitar playing and stage presence will never be forgotten.

It's all childs-play for Sykes.... He is a different breed
Sykes and Gotham, are just GODDAMN incredible onstage together. Phil would be happy with the killer version they just belted out…
You can't fake this, the guy is talented

Haha I always notice Sykes doing it as well, I'm exactly the same 😂
Is that why? Always wondered about that, thought it was just a nervous thing he did.
Frankly I find it cute. But what's cuter is the that he skips across the stage and falls right into my heart. Love John ❤️🌹
this is what i like to see.
RAAAW FUCKING POWER!
Hij was de beste!

He has his money in a suitcase...wouldn't it be safer in a bank? :P Love this song.

Jorne Lande on the Ayreon cd 01011001 sounds very much like Phil. Otherwise he has more of a Coverdale or Dio sound. What a voice!
Michael Lee on the kit
2:42
drummer is dead now - very sad
G8 performance guitar should have been louder!
