I really liked The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie. It was a nice read. It's part of a series (all about the Mackenzie men) but this is my fav. Not really into traditional historical romances but I really enjoyed it.
Also wanted to add that Sarah MacLean, funny enough, is basically a scholar of the genre with almost an encyclopedic knowledge of romance, particularly of historical, and is a gold mine herself for recommendations. She has a podcast called Fated Mates, and it’s worth it just to tune in and hear her describe & rec books.
OMG! Read the Pirate and the Pagan by Virginia Henley. It's an older one, but very well worth it! Love, adventure, danger, romance in and around Restoration London (King Charles II).
For those who haven’t read a HR yet, anything written in approx the last 5 years or so, or at least this decade, are written in a modern way; so you shouldn’t find any rods of steel penises or flower petal vaginas. My first was a Tessa Darr a few years ago, then I binged on Elizabeth Hoyt’s Maiden Lane Series, Kerrigan Byrne. I’ve also discovered queer historical is my favourite thing: Cat Sebastian writes historical m/m, published with Avon; KJ Charles writes historical m/m, self published. I’m currently reading Sarah Maclean’s Wicked and the Wallflower, and loving it!
I loved The Soldier’s Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian. She writes mostly m/m and they are so good! I know she’s very well-known, but just want to put in a plug for Beverly Jenkins’ Indigo. I love Shana Galen’s The Scarlett Chronicles also. It’s set during the French Revolution. I know you’re a bit younger than I am, but I LOVED The Oregon Trail game as a kid & Bound for Sin by Tess Lesue is a whole series set on the Oregon Trail! Try this first tho (I adore this one but DNF’d the 1st). And omg Jess if you haven’t read The Secret by Julie Garwood, definitely check it out. It’s set in medieval Scotland with action and adventure + an awesome female friendship. It has a super alpha hero. I just think you’d love it. I also thought The Earl I Ruined by Scarlett Peckham was fantastic. She is a newer author that brings such a fresh voice to historicals.

Love at Christmas by Kathy Maxwell another tear jerk very emotional 😭 and passionately you will suffer with struggles of the lady.
I love reading HR,u should read "Dreaming of you " byLisa Kleypas(The gamblers of Craven series).It's so good, my all time favourite ,and the romance is awsome.Read it 3 times.
The beast of Beswick is a good book and I recommend. The battle between both characters because the main character the hero went to war scared 😱. The ton called him the beast 😭😢😩

Alyssa Cole has some great standalone, short and Anthology HR, but her Loyal League trilogy is AMAZING. Also, Vanessa Riley is a newer name in HR with an interesting series called Advertisements for Love. TFS :)
Kelly Bowen’s “Season for Scandal” series was amazing! She writes a really strong female protagonist and I just fell in love with her books when I found that series 😊
I recommend Lorraine Heath all her books are very good. I started reading her books and not look back. In bed with the devil was the first book of her and you will a fan. Also Cathy Maxwell excelente I love all her books. The most important is Kathleen Woodiwiss is the one who started the genre. I call her the mother all his ti al Romance the flame and the flower she sold 2 millions copies and number 1 in New York Timesnin 1973. She passed away in 2008 and I still feel the lost. Lisa kleypas after these names you will find a very great writers. As paranormal historical romance is Amanda Ashley.
