    You explantion is great and is the only one I have found that explicitly addresses UTM projection and UTM grid systems as separate entities.

    I think you forgot to mention that the central meridian in each zone is always set to 500 000 east. That means that as you get closer to the zones, the actual width of each zone decreases, so you can include a quite large area of the neighbouring zone to the west without encountering negative easting coordinates.

    What I read assigned false easting n northing are:
    North zones
    500,000 m
    none
    South zones
    500,000 m
    10,000,000
