Very informative, could you give an example of the cost involved for the conversion please, even if it's the cost of the parts only. Great project by the way! Is there an aftermarket security system that is worth purchasing as these cars are apparently easy to steal and are a well known target for car thieves?
Oh no why did I watch this. Sam you have put thoughts in my head again. Might be the next thing on the bowler after we put the new springs on it. Great work as always
Bloody Brilliant! i always wanted to find out more on this conversion. Like many Puma owners, i'm worrying about the ford engine ticking time bomb and whether to go a more reliable route or replace with another time bomb. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be enough information online or in fb groups about this swap. This video has addressed alot of my concerns. Thanks heaps Juice motors for making these videos!
Here’s me all proud of myself for replacing the starter motor on my old Land Rover today then I watch this video. Well done guys. Brilliant job so far 👍
Your channel is watched directly from the most closed country of Turkmenistan, know this) where there is desert, mountains, seas and + 45- + 60 degrees in summer. Discovery and Defenders cut across the desert like ships across the sea.
Great transplant and really really want to do this with my dead Puma but have to drop another 2.4 in for now to get it going! Be careful with the old engine - it’s going to be retired to a good home in the sunshine 😀😂
Looks a great project - when you do the next video can you give some idea of costs eg what you paid for engine etc as I want to change 300tdi engine to BMW
Great vid yet again, but so pleased you're back on defenders. Very interesting vid been wondering for a while whats involved with a BMW engine swap. Juice again answers those questions. Keep up the great work guys 👍
insane swap! that’s great, my mechanics knowledge is very basic, I know well how to change the wheels, so i think what you’re doing is so good and crazy! anyway it’s something within the Juice’s scope and skills greaaat project! keep up Juice
That's brilliant. Great! Well, I could also imagine the M57 very well in my Puma. Thanks for this informative video. Good job. I look forward to the next video on this!
Yes! Fantastic, this is super interesting. Only concern is the puma transfer case output shaft but would love to drive this. Well done Juice 👍🏽 quick question how do you go about re-registering as a 3.0L with the dvla?
I drive a 3L petrol engined straight six cylinder twin scroll turbo in my late X5 in North America as it’s manufactured locally, the same reason I keep a V8 petrol Rangey this side of the pond. I think you missed an opportunity to convert to petrol, twin scroll straight six BMW engine is one of the best engines out there. Hopefully the BWM diesel engine you have is a late version circa 2012 with 280 BHP or so.
A mate of mine worked on call outs for the RAC for nearly twenty years..... He told me a list of cars to never own, ever. Surprisingly VW, Audi and Porsche were on the list, as was the Freelander.... BMW was at the top, closely followed by the later Range Rovers. As a Land Rover owner and enthusiast of many years the most reliable engine, and possibly the most reliable engine ever made is the 2 1/4 petrol engine, but low power and much lower MPG. The only others I would consider are the 200 and 300 TDI, and the 3.5 V8, all simple and fixable, and not a computer anywhere. Other than that, if someone did a Toyota Hiace 2.4 conversion, I would consider that.
Great video guys. I would be very interested to know the pricing involved here. For you to carry out this conversion on a customers vehicle with the BMW auto Box included what would the ball park be? The Puma engine is a strong little beast but it is very agricultural, I have been looking at affordable alternatives.
The South African Police used Defenders with a BMW M52 engine. By all accounts, they were a very good match for the Defenders with 192hp, compared to that of the Puma engine at 122hp !
Thanks for the video…I’ve subscribed. Keen to see this one progress. Merc Om606 conversions are well know for these also #k2design&engineering specialise in it…only problem is they are now rare and consequently expensive to find so these could be the next best thing regards defender engine swaps
This is really awesome! I wonder what would be needed for a 1987 defender? I converted mine to a 250ci Chevrolet straight six with a Holley sniper fuel injection system. I would like the BMW power plant but am not sure what adapter i need for the R380. I imported mine from the UK and kept it RHD. You guys a Juice are awesome!
Either 28mm spacer with p38 2.5 manual bellhousing and uprated clutch or adapter plate with new flywheel and bmw clutch, the cheaper option is the first one although not as strong apparently, best way is bmw gearbox with adapter to transfer box
This work will be in 2-3 parts (video)! Sam, why did you decide to change it to a BMW motor? Will there be a video with the black Defender (who stands with the interior disassembled?) Well done guys! By the way, the video clips from the second floor turned out great! 15:53
Would this conversion work well in my 1983 110 county station wagon? Better/ easier than a tdv8? If so what gearbox would be best it's currently 2.5 na with lt77 box?
Hi Sam great video, like I said I put the same springs on mine and with the fox shocks you rave about but I seem to be getting bumping from the rear like the bump stops are hitting the axle when I go over speed bumps, i did chop the bump stops down but it still does it! Have you had and similar experience or ideas to solve? Thanks.
It’s not modified, this particular engine is straight from an X5, there’s plenty of clearance between the axle, so much so, you’d be in trouble elsewhere if you made the 2 meet!
@@juicemotors please don’t think I was hating mate. I’ve watched every single one of your videos and I’ve always found them entertaining which is why I come back to you. I know you can’t always please everyone but with this technical stuff I just thought maybe some further explanation would be nice for us more mechanically inclined guys
Bonjour, pourriez vous rajouter dans les commentaires n'es différent traduction pour pouvoir comprendre ce que vous dites, car mon anglais n'est pas aussi bon que le vôtre 😂😂😂Merci
Highly unlikely…in my experience these engines don’t burn or drip any oil…the outgoing engine is basically a shitty ford transit engine…beemer engine not only will produce loads more torque and power but It’ll also be much better on fuel on lastly sound brilliant by comparison to the rattly knacker currently in place…win win
As much as i like your videos …I wonder when you and your Team, will do your first EV conversion ..? Greetings from Germany everybody… Stay safe … Get the „jab“ 👍

Thanks for bringing defenders back!!
In the late 90s in South Africa the Defender was briefly available with a 2.8l BMW petrol engine. Very rare and sought after cars.
Oh no why did I watch this. Sam you have put thoughts in my head again. Might be the next thing on the bowler after we put the new springs on it. Great work as always

Don't forget to disconnect battery, saw alarm light flashing in the dash.

Solid engine choice awsome engine the n57. I was blown away how powerful thru are in stock form with out a tune and they are reliable
Out of interest how much does something like this cost from the engine itself to all the parts on the table? 🤔
Must be hilarious working with Frankie Boyle
Love the sound of the m57, nice build! 😍
You have great videos, helps with modifying my own Defender from across the pond. Keep up the good work.
Would you change the axles? If so, to what?
Price breakdown at end would be very informative 👌
This is an awesome project. Cant wait to see it finished. Puma engine has always stopped me from purchasing newer defender. This just changed my mind
Would live to see a documented galv chassis replacement. Great video too!
Yes, v.interested in costing as we defender owners often looking at power boost options!
Low range is where you bust stuff. Interested in the position of the engine for the air con to still fit. Especially seeing as its a RHD

Looks like this will be a cracking build! Would love to have my Defender get the Juice Motors treatment

Top work guys! Looking forward to the next installment. Also, Leon's beard is looking quite majestic at the moment! 🙂
Great series of videos!! I am a subscriber forever!
Do the earlier M57 engines come with pre common rail fuel injector pumps?

ULEZ is here
Gorgeous don't want it I need it 😁👍👍 dream landy right colour & engine to match as usual great job guys 👍👍👍
Cool - An Ineos Grenadier.
i am in the middle of doing a 110 county same colour pack looks lovely so does that 90

You’re essentially making a Grenadier 🤣🤣

X5 hybrid would be very cool 😎
Thinking the same conversion on my Disco 3.
Crossed my mind as well…either this or the old mercedes straight six turbo diesel…think its the OM606
Thanks so much for doing this and sharing! 🤙

I need a defender like this 👌
Are the puma Defenders any good or should I stick with the Td5 Defender, it’s not a daily just a weekend toy…….. thoughts 💭

Brilliant video, Is there a bolt in kit for td5s?
There isn’t one available for the TD5 but January we will show you how it’s done in
Where do you get the defender lettering? I was looking to get a custom word
More Ocean please!!
Which BMW can you recommend I fit in my 88 landie?
Love it! What 1" lowering springs did you use Sam?
They look like the terrafirma lowered springs I have on mine!
They’re Terrafirma Springs!

Can you put a BMW N62 in a defender?
Could you please tell me how much a build like this would cost?
Did the South African Defender have the same BMW engine
Is that Stornoway grey?
Is the oilpan modified to clear the frontaxle? If not what model year e46 did it sit in originally? Im interested in doing this conversion to my P38
It’s not modified, this particular engine is straight from an X5, there’s plenty of clearance between the axle, so much so, you’d be in trouble elsewhere if you made the 2 meet!
Oh to have the knowledge.
good job
I may have had a few drinks what diesel bmw engine the 3 lt
Is it a diesel engine
Does the dpf have to be retained ?
No DPF on the original 2.4 or the replacement X5 engine
Would like to put the bmw 3.0 in my Subaru
J/M. You could've done way better sir ! These Land Rover Defender models only need -200BHp engine conversions ? V.
If you’ve driven one with over 200bhp it’s much more enjoyable & fun!
I wish these videos had more information in instead of lots of time lapses, although i understand that timelapse videos are quicker to produce
Can’t win sometimes! Ive been told to get on with it many times, now more explanation?

what gearbox you are using\
