  • My Ford F150 hood latch would not allow the hood to close all the way. The release cable spring was broken. This video shows how we replaced the spring.

My 2004 sable has the same latch. The hood would not latch closed and it was held in place only by the safety latch. I found the broken spring laying in that area but didn't know what it was for or how it was to be connected until I found your video. I found a replacement spring at the neighborhood Ace Hardware store that nearly matched perfectly for $1.29. Saved me a lot of time some money. Thanks for posting the video.

From now on, use PB Blaster™ or Kroil™ to loosen bolts that are rusted in place. Then, use a wire brush and lithium grease to get rid of rust on the parts so that the rust will not start again. Your replacement spring is fine and will work as long as you keep the crust off it. I use bar and chain oil (it's cheap, but really works) on hinges and pivot points of ALL kinds because it clings to metal for a long time. This is from a 50 year auto mechanic!

Great video ! I wish I would have seen this one first. I own 98 ford f-250 (with the same broken spring) . anyway I ended buying the whole hood latch from ebay. The cost was $23 with shipping. easy fix ok price. but will definitely just buy the spring if it ever happens again.

My 96 Explorer the mechanic I had look at it said I needed a new hood latch. Hard to find now and needed a trip to take one off a wreck. Nope just needed a new spring. Going to change both springs I think since it's apart.

Well I had to come back to let you guys know at first it was a struggle on decision (mechanic) 2nd I took my time to carefully do it myself & there was the springs in position but it would not release back so I used a flathead screw driver to push the mechanism back in place & bingo done.. thanks guys for the awesome video

It’s beneficial to wire brush the rust off, and lubricate the other mechanisms while there is the opportunity.

was the broken spring making the cable not retract? and that caused the hood to not fully latch?

    • @michellesfrugallivin

Must be something like that. It is odd that a missing spring would cause it not to close.

😍 went to a bunch of auto stores and they didn't carry them but, if you need this spring go to your local "Ace Hardware" and ask them for springs, they have a hinge/spring isle and they keep the springs in a drawer. I found several sizes l. Thank you for the tutorial. Theres another way to do M it without unscrewing that mechanism thingy but your way is faster and less nerve wrecking. I did it with 3 hands 😄🔥🤬. But for real you may really need to grease it up good so it wont cease again because that's what causes that to happen in the first place. "Grease the spring and the wire cable thoroughly!!!

Better grease that rusty ass thing... might as well replace the other spring while you’re at it. Look how rusty it is!!! If it locks open the hood will fly off at highway speeds! If locked closed, you will have a hard ass time opening the hood.

I searched high and low for the spring - to no avail. Ultimately, I purchased this spring - from Fastenal: www.fastenal.com/products/details/110166816 - which looks very similar to the random replacement spring you installed. It took some effort getting it on (not a perfect fit because it’s not the exact replacement); but once installed, the hood latched! But … big dilemma: Now the opposite problem: it won’t unlatch! Any suggestions?
