How to drive a 1924 Model T Ford Truck

  • A demonstration how to drive Don Tompkin's 1924 Model T Ford truck by Usek of Autotech, in Eastsound, WA. It was sold in May of 2016 to Steve Lillestol of Lopez Island, WA, who is now using it for his business, Island Grist.
    To ready the truck for sale it was taken to Autotek to check for any defects, then returned to the farm. I filmed the arrival then asked Usek to give me a tutorial so I (the farm care taker) could drive it down to Orcas Rd. with a For Sale sign. The family had put an ad on craigslist and in a national magazine but there were no serious buyers for 2 months. However, after driving it down to the road where it could be seen by ferry traffic, it sold within a week. It went to the perfect buyer because Steve knows these vehicles well. After driving it over to Lopez he replaced the transmission and the last time i talked to him, was really happy with it.
    Island Grist is partnered with Barn Owl Bakery and the truck now has Steve's logo on the side. It can be seen during the week delivering flour from his mill to the bakery,.
    I had no idea when I posted this video (which was primarily for my own edification) that it would become so popular. But now I see that antique cars have quite a following on youtube. I want to thank everyone for their comments and hope Randy gets over whatever is ailing him. Being an ogre is a tough job. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
    For those who remember Don and used to see him driving around town in the Model T with his Border Collies, and wave to him in the annual 4th of July parade, I will tell you that as of today, March 24th, 2017, he is still with us. No one expected him to last this long. He is in a nursing home in Bothell, WA, near his daughter, and although he can still get around in a wheel chair, has no recollection of ever having owned this vehicle.

    Fantastic car! Model T's were designed to be maintained at home, many owners lived far from a garage. There are TH-cam videos showing how to replace the three clutch bands yourself. I hope its still rolling in another hundred years!!

    I would normally drive it with the brake lever all the way forward and use my left foot on the clutch pedal, so when I stop I don't have to reach for the lever I just put the pedal half way down with my left foot, at the same time use my right foot on the brake. If I wanted to stay stopped idling for a while just pull the brake lever half way back. But you do need to keep the linkage to the clutch adjusted out a little so neutral is from the middle and when the brake is all the way back. It seems complex and it is but like anything else with practice it's second nature.

    Wow...that is MAJOR 😎 cool!! I knew they were different, but I'd say it takes more than a little practice and patience before you hit the open road. A large 🚜 barnyard is a perfect playground, so if you do something wrong...no harm no foul. Good idea to mark everything for reference.
    Thanx for sharing, I am definitely filing this video for the future. ✌😊

    • @brandonscherff9344
      @brandonscherff9344 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marvin the Maniac , depends, you really need two feet for the pedals sometimes. , although maybe you could get around that by using the handbrake lever to put it in neutral whenever you brake. My dad didn’t have use of his left foot when driving, so he could not have driven one of these, his license was restricted to automatics only.

    • @marvinthemaniac7698
      @marvinthemaniac7698 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @garysauter7997
      @garysauter7997 ปีที่แล้ว

      Model T's don't have a true neutral.
      It's a planetary system.
      Much of the info on this video is solid.
      However, there's a few things I don't agree with.
      However, it's enough info here to get things rolling. Overall, decent video.

    When did cars get the modern throttle, brake and clutch pedal system?
    This T looks like something from 1890s.
    No wonder Ford lost market share to GM.

    • @Th3Sabator45
      @Th3Sabator45 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ford was really the only one sticking to this way. By the 20s there was the regular clutch and pedals. Ford still stuck with the spark advance and the throttle on the steering colum for the model A which was the late 20s

    I thought I could drive one of these once. Only difference is it was a 1927 Model. The clown that let me drive it restored old cars. I didn't get 150 feet down the road when I ran it in the ditch trying to shift gears. I tore the front end all to hell, punctured the radiator, knocked the head lights clean off, and broke the windshield. By the way the windshield broke out in shards I could have got cut to bits. steam and antifreeze was shooting up in the air just like in the movies. The car owner came out yelling at me, said I just cost him about $20,000. I just said you should not have let me drive it then. I called my wife and she gave me a ride home. I never felt obligated in anyway. It was his dumb ass fault for letting me drive it with no training to start with.
