Playa del Carmen is a coastal resort town in Mexico, along the Yucatán Peninsula's Riviera Maya strip of Caribbean shoreline. Tip for foreign visitors. If you have a meal at the Mercado on Tenth Avenue count your change. I was shortchanged last week and got it corrected. And these incidents are not accidents, either.
We suggest checking your change every time you pay in cash. Good practice and keeps things fair.

yes, very safe. i live in DC and felt much safer in Playa

@@aliyahdesouza-watson9857 I understand your concerns. I'm from DC and travel annually to Playa. I hear the news reports and yes have concerns like you. The violence that has occurred is drug related and between them. The same happens in any major city but we still travel or live there. My friends and I spent the week fishing, relaxing on the beach, visiting beach clubs, visiting quinta, riding ATV, and swimming in cenotes. At no time did I feel unsafe. Can you avoid all danger entirely? No, that is not possible but there was less concern for safety in Playa then in DC. Where are you planning to visit?
@@hansfranz9914 the Tulum area and some of the cenotes. Hearing about the violence has made me extremely concerned I’m not sure whether to change my booking to another destination or wait
@@aliyahdesouza-watson9857 I wouldn't wait but you need to make your own decision. Tourism is very important to everyone there from the taxi driver, to the waiter, to the hotel staff, and oh yes also the drug dealer. They don't want violence; they only want to make money. If these things happened regularly, everyone that works in that area would suffer from a decrease in tourism. If I only went by news reports, I would not travel to DC. But yet, I have lived there all my life and have never had an issue.
