  • In this video I take you through the Spin Hook Kick from start to finish and point out all of the important elements that you want to take into account in order to make the move work effortlessly.
    Remember that this stuff takes practice/repetition and aside from knowing what goes into the move, that's the most important element! So don't be discouraged if you can't do it straight away. Repetition is the mother of skill!

    Dope hooks man, but really curious as to where your perspective came on saying that a hook with no step is just as telegraphed as a step hook? The step literally makes the move take longer to do, no?

    • @grantstevensma
      @grantstevensma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Nah it doesn't man, because it's the start of momentum that makes the rest of it faster afterwards, that wouldn't be the case if it was just done from static. Kind of like a lunging jab, it makes the subsequent exertion faster because they build on each other. Does that make sense?

    • @Shack
      @Shack 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grantstevensma I guess I would have to see it in action to get what you mean. Coming from a wtf tkd sparring background, that little pivot is what gets a lot of people knocked out with a counter attack. Isn't a lunge meant for closing the more distance? Unless you mean a small slide in/skip, then the jab happens at the same time, no? This works well for switch + kicks because your feet move at the same time as the kick. But I still don't see how it's physically possible for taking a step before initiating the kick, can be faster than doing the kick all at once.
      For tricking, coreo and target kicks, it's not a big deal. But if we're talking sparring, as soon as you see someone take a step, pivot or shift their body weight, you know a back kick or hook kick is about to come.
      And im not trying to be an ass by the way. I'm curious to see if I missed something or if there's something I haven't realized before because many people spend a lot of time eliminating that pivot so their kicks are less readable

    Great video!
    Question: Does shifting weight to the heel also help when executing all spinning kicks i.e. spinning side kick?

    • @grantstevensma
      @grantstevensma  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually this is a little different bro! The reason for the heel weight-shift in the spin hook is because the move comes across the target laterally. It's different in the spin back/side kick because it's a rotation into a thrusting kick (like a piston), and that pretty much negates the need/function to spin back to the original stance. Hope that makes sense, it's a little hard to describe, but I'll be doing a video about this kick in the future!
