How to Play Hangman in an ESL Class - Easy ESL Games - Videos For Teachers

  • I always thought that hangman was a bad game for ESL classes, one of those games that just wastes time. However, when I finished online classes I had to think of some socially distanced games to play in class.
So I changed hangman and made it useful. It's faster, more fun, and there's more learning. I also took out the hangman bit to avoid problems in class and, honestly, just to make it more fun.

    Some great ideas! Thanks!
Btw my students have to ask me: "Does it have an "A" , Does it have a "B" etc...
Easy way to show them how to use "does" and how to use "a" and "an" (does it have an "N"?)
Never use the "hangman" picture, plenty of other ways as you mentioned.
Drawing 2 pictures (one for each team) is the easiest. (2 faces, cars or whatever) The picture that's finished first is the winner.
You can actually have the students draw the face parts ( and perhaps pre-teach in needed) This is a nose/I want to draw a nose/ I can draw a nose etc.

Changed my view completely on hangman. I teach high school and have used the game if a lesson ends too quickly. It's never a teaching exercise, just to kill time (no pun intended). Sadly we had a student kill themselves this year (I believe by hanging) and it never even crossed my mind that this game could be potentially traumatic for some students. Luckily I haven't used it after that unfortunate event and will change it up to one of your suggested games next time.

Yeah for me it was realizing that the only reason the kid ran out was because it was still fresh enough to get that reaction. A few months later and he would have just sat there, knowing that the whole class was thinking of how he’d react.
The game still isn’t that great, but it works in socially distanced classrooms

Thanks! Especially for your opinion about the image of a hangman. I totally agree

Great ideas! That's a very sad story at the end, and I hadn't considered that angle before. I think one way to play the game that is not related to death, is to draw 10 balloons per team and if they get it wrong, you "pop"/erase a balloon.

You could have students ask, "Is there a 'b'?" and answer with, "Yes, there is / No, there's not," so they get to practice "there is" grammar. You could also have them ask, "Are there any 'b's?"

I use this game strictly for students who are studying the alphabet. They all really like the hangman model. Just saying. It definitely could be a problem in Japan though.

No offense taken, I saw it on a 4k last night and it was brutal.
The day before I went to University for the first time I broke my nose in a rugby game - a flat Jason Stratham nose and 2 huge black eyes. The girls loved me! Then I had my nose fixed and they didn’t like me anymore.
      Damn
