i have gone to two different Corvette Restoration shops (In PA) to estimate have my 69 repainted with very little body work needed and both came back at 30 to $35,000 minimum. The work they had done looked fantastic. The body work on the 64 looks perfect. Great work! I am assuming the 16K included to strip it. if it did, the 16K sounds great to me!
Ha, I painted my car with 7 spray cans at $6.99 per can. It looks great.... At 40 feet away......After dark...Said my friend with 20/70 vision. When he saw it up close he said it should be color sanded.... with 36 grit on a high speed grinder. He's not a friend anymore! :P
So many key points in this video. Explanation is on point. What do you expect? What is work is expected from painter? What level of finish, orange peel or not? The fact that you are still doing some finish work after that cost of paint. Showing that it still needs to be cut and buffed, underhood still needs finishing. All these things that some would think was paid for at that cost. Pointing out all this and what has to be done to achieve the desired finish. Communication is key and everybody being on the same page. Each car is different. From the looks of pics that is a very good job. Especially if the materials were included in that price.
Hello I talked to Junior two weeks ago he spent some time talking to me he seems very down to earth for a Corvette restorer seems very humble and not trying to sell you a “ 100k dream” I like him to look at my 63 vette and have him tell me what he thinks.
I just got done painting my 1975 Corvette. Took me forever stripped the car down to the fiberglass the entire car sanding repairing fiberglass Apoxsee primer high build primer basecoat clearcoat, this was my first car paint job! I am happy with the way it turned out, some small issues, but it will never cross the block at Barrett Jackson!
16k for a paint job from stripped to finish is a really good deal! It would be easily 20k to a non dealer. That paint looks incredible. I thought it was cut and polished already. Your painter is a true master.
I use Perfect it on my guitar finishes after the Menzerna hard compound on the buffing wheel. It's fricken magic! I use it on my repairs when I have to bring back a dull finish or on touch ups. I guess I should charge more for my finishes, lol.
Very few people have their work nitpicked and scrutinized as much as painters, It's very stressful. It's Hard to find a painter who isn't looking for a different career, plus there's way more money in insurance work so very few people who have talent want to paint old cars, The paint was probably about 3000.00, 150 hours at 80.00 , pretty damn reasonable!
Easily $16k. I would think at high-end paint shop rate, you could go through this much in labor for 1-2 man-weeks of work. Beautiful job. This really stands out. Thanks Junior!
I honestly wouldn't know where to begin. I did the bodywork with my father and my uncle (who's a professional) paint my C3. I spent about $3.5k on my paint products. It took my father and I about 5 years to do all of the body work needed to get it right with no filler and all glass repairs. It turned out nice, but it's not perfect. It wasn't ever meant to be a perfect car though. It's for fun and driving.
Back in 1990 I paid Brads Auto Body in Phoenix AZ $9,000 + my really nice 1977 280Z to paint my 69 Fathom Green Vette Roadster and it looks Beautiful! They not only painted it but redid the Bonding Seams! They no longer had Lacquer so it was a Base Coat Clear Coat Polyurethane but I could not tell the difference, the car was, Stunning With the White Rag Top. P.S. Brads only does ins. jobs now but there are a TON of Custom Body Shops out there, find one with a good reputation!
Nice description of the stress crack areas and the resin used to do it correctly. Love the correct edge on those fenders and doors. What a good price, well paint today cost a lot more then the old days. I think the low end should be around 12k to 18 max without bodywork. Just my opinion is all.
most people know how much these cars, and most quality classics cost. and i have no qualms with them being worth it. but why, you see the auctions, you see the shows, these cars are not driven because they cost too much, most are investments. i know you are tired of hearing about the good old days, but we drove our cars, i could put a lacquer paint job on a car that would put some of todays paint jobs to shame, it took lots of time and plenty of very hard labor, but it looked good and good be spotted if you got a scratch, lots of painters in shops with booths in the 60s thru early 90s, could do an extremely good looking enamel baked on paint job, and i was around during the imron era, dangerous and time consuming but beautiful. my point is i would rather see thousands of good looking cars on the street than less in car shows or locked up for investments. just my opinion
Frankly a bit too expensive however the results and quality is clearly demonstrated. I would probably end up paying it. Thank Jr. for bringing this up.
Unfortunately not, any abrasive that is aggressive enough to remove paint and primer will also get into the fiberglass and resin. Also, it is difficult to control cutting depth when using blasting as a substrate removal method. While our old school method of stripping is labor intensive, it ensures we don't damage what lies beneath. Thanks for the excellent question and for checking out my content!
Do you use Baking Soda as a media to strip the paint? I was told chemical stripper was not to be used because it will absorb into the glass and ruin the paint job.
You mentioned that you used PPG paint and that this was done in the original color. Was it done in lacquer or was it done with modern paint? I have a 66 coupe restoring to factory condition, using PPG (prophet code) laguna blue in an original lacquer application, and thermoflux. Lotsa work doing it this way but is worthy for the deepness lacquer delivers, imho. Everything else makes the fiberglass look like plastic.
Tremendous paint job. I assume this was a no hit body or did it required body work. 12-15,000 for a no hit body. Thanks for taking the time. I would like you to paint my 67 marina blue convertible. How can I contact you? Thanks Gene
only a handful of shop do the super Hight quality work that you do . But you can only properly estimate a price on a proper paint job when the car has been stripped down to bare metal /Glass and you go over the whole car .
Yeah you spend $16 k on a paint job ( which to me is insane ) then you’ll be afraid to drive it more than 5 miles a month ! To me this sounds like some people have more money than brains ...
I had a Norton motorcycle fuel tank painted once, it was metal flake blue where it could be oviously seen and white in less obvious areas.Slack workmanship is very annoying because the colour of your money is always perfect when we pay for the work.
With fiberglass all bets are off, first complete fiberglass restoration and wetting. Old fiberglass is brittle and constantly drying and outgassing, the only continous is the unbroken glass fibers themselves. All else must be restrored from the that substrate.
I think it's kinda high. But I don't know the man hour cost that you pay your workers and that's were it's cost alot. Plus your take to make money is also a factor.
Not surprising We paid $41K for paint and body on a 59 Corvette that included installation of a new nose😯...and they paint wasn't that great, lots of reshoots and eventually pulled the car to be finish painted elsewhere. My 64 coupe has driver quality paint, and will probably stay that way as long as I own it.
I got my new 2020 corvette for 67k all new new paint ;) this car 125-175k for parts work and paint and purchase of old car or more? Not sure it makes Sense
We do have a dedicated painter and machine shop we work with for our corvettes. While we could bring those steps in house, it would not increase quality or reduce cost over our current process so we see no need. Also, my painter and machine guy are the best in the game and prefer having their own facilities. I realize the cost sounds crazy to some but there are just as many others willing to write checks. Fortunately for me, top notch work seems to self perpetuate and I stay busy as a result. Thanks for checking out my channel!
A lot of those stress cracks are not going to reappear if!, the frame is replaced with an aftermarket one!, and your not putting to powerful of an engine back into it!?😮😊, the original frame is not the best, structurally speaking,😢, but 16 thou for a paint job doesn't sound too high compared to some I have heard about!👍, I definitely want these guys to build my Corvette!😎❤❤
I think thats about a fair price, but paint jobs can go up to 25 grand easy. You also pointed out the most important parts of a corvette that alot of painter screw up on paint jobs
They never looked anything like blown glass sculptures any time in their normal life.. so this is not restoration.. it is strictly custom.. bring on the 28" wheels w/no tires.
paint IMO is the hardest thing to get right. the funny thing is every guy that shoots paint, thinks they are so awesome. but actually they have tons of flaws.

You're bang on. Cars owners need to educate themselves to know what goes into quality work.
Agree with your quality of paint and process. Good luck and do not waver on your high standards.

We definitely appreciate the kind words!
I'd say at least $600K for paint job

Time and materials, that makes a fair job. To each his own craft.

What paint shop on earth get $400/hr in Labor… or even if 2 man-weeks, $200/hr?
Settle down, Texas
Nice job😉 learned alot
I have a black 69 conv Vette that needs paint, and I would be thrilled to get your quality of paint for that price!
C2 corvettes are in my all-time top 3 cars ever made.

What is the labor rate for your painter. I know what materials cost. !!
Here in California Corvette Corvette paint jobs start about 15-25 grand depending on body work also

That's why I'm looking for the right '65. There's very little in-between: cars that need lots f work or cars that cost too much to ever use.
Curious as to the cost of supplies for that paint job. Thanks in advance ... love this channel 👍
At least 2k to 2.5 k , from body filler to clear coat
Junior, quality takes time, skill and money which you know. Your finished projects exemplify the perfection of all. 16k seems reasonable to me.
Yeah cause you're not paying
@@wileecoyote5749 actually, I am going to pay for a premium paint job on my 69 Camaro. It very well may cost 16k

Sadly many places will charge that kind of money but don’t do that kind of quality work.
Greetings Jr! Would you consider plastic media blasting suitable for stripping those cars to fiberglass? Any thoughts ?
Thanks in advance !

Cheap work ain't good
Also, it might be good to note that the cost of red paint is one of the highest colors.
Black is the most expensive color to paint because of the body work involved.
Such a sexy car and you do an awesome job with all of them!
Super Wildman Perfection!
Should use a pressure pot ( old school ), but still the best way to paint any auto. Been doing it for 40+ years.
How do you strip the paint ….. chemical sanding blasting?
$16K is a really reasonable price to paint a classic. I’ve had quotes as high as $50K for my BelAir
😳
For a paint job? Wow
@@Blk63Vette I had quotes for my BelAir of $20/40K
