I have a K1600 GT that came with this style box and I love it. When traveling, it is so nice just to turn the key to pop the handle, lift it off, and carry it into the room. This one also seems to be a lot more steady than the K1600 GTL factory case.
I bought a new 2018 and took the OEM plunge with the custom Blue Planet paint (option 719) 1600$. It stung! But look how dam purty. And thanks Chris, for all your vids. God loves yu and so do I
Brilliant, Chris. I'm box shopping this morning for my new to me 2018 RT and of course, it's boxless at this point. I don't necessarily need one but my GF demands one due to the backrest feature and her wide assortment of traveling hair dryers, curling irons, and makeup mirror. You just made my ebay search a hell of a lot easier. Thanks much.
Great video, have just taken delivery of a new R1250RT I have bought the old style 49L top case and used your guide to fit the lock. Very well explained and one very happy customer!
Hello Guy, could you please confirm to me that it fits perfect on the new R 1250 RT and your experience with it.. I'm scared about purchasing before being completely sure. Thank you very much.
@@juanantoniorosadobenitez9508 I checked with my local dealer before I ordered the top box and confirm that it fits perfectly. The top box is great and I'm very pleased with it.
@@guypurdy654 Thank you very much, my local dealer told he was not sure about the fitting of the old model in the new bikes, so once purchased I would have to pay for it assumming the risk. Now I can be sure it will not be a waste of money. Thank you again from Spain.
I have an ‘18 RT and bought this box and key cylinder. I figured, for the $700 savings I could lock it myself and I very definitely prefer to have the ability to easily remove the top box.
Thank you for the upload, great Vid! Regarding inner bags though, ever since I tried them back in 2009 & realized how tidier things can be, specially with larger boxes that can accommodate more stuff, they've become for me a standard accessory with any motorcycle purchase.
I have used both boxes and I think the old one is a bit bigger inside. Case in point; with the "classic" case, I could place the helmet upright on one side of the case. With the new one, the helmet would need to be placed on its side for the lid to close properly. Thus, taking up a little more room.
interesting that you're back to an RT. I love my 2014 after 5 years on a GoldWing. I loved the wing, but the RT isn't as bulky, handles better and is a joy to ride. A great touring bike with some pizzaz.
+Michael Kallelis You are correct. Having ridden an RT hard through the mountains i really developed an appreciation for a well balanced tourer. I think if i did less back road riding i would stick with the K16, but since my riding is more varied, and i typically flip bikes every 3 years, i wanted to try the new design RT. The K16 handles curves just fine, its just a little more work. The Wing riders i meet who flip to BMW's are varied, but , like you, are very clear on what they want.
Well, the RT has been good so far. My only complaint has been the odd tire wear on the Metzler's. After 7,000 miles I'm changing to the Michelin's. I'm riding the RT from Seattle to Boston this year (4,000 miles) and I'll get a good feeling if this is my forever bike or not. Keep up the videos!
Hello Chris, only today seeing your video on the top box... Do you by any chance know if a 2020 RS top Box would also fit on a 2016 R1200RT? I have a left-over top box from my previous RS and would like to mount it on an RT I plan on getting...Thanks much!!
Thanks Chris. I'm wanting to change the barrel in my oem 49l top box and have seen the videos using a little tool to remove it but had no luck. If i remove the black interior of the box does this give me access to the barrel? how do i get this thing out???
good question. BMW recommends NOT taking it apart -- its glued and riveted (from what I can see) , and you may have difficulty putting it back together and keeping it that way. That being said-- I have never taken one apart so I really don't know. The recommended course of action is to remove the little coin cover inside the lip , and use a long bent pointer to release the spring retainer
Chris... Can you explain how to get the lock cylinder out of the topcase? I have seen discussions online, but haven't been able to get the lock cylinder out. I have the same topcase as your video. I purchased it new/used and I don't have the key. BTW... love your videos.
You can access the release pin but it is very difficult. You remove the "coin screw" plastic cover beside the latch cut-out inside the bottom half . At the end of the plastic housing for the lock cylinder down in that hole is a spring loaded tab that faces down -- however, if i recall, you will need the key to align the tumblers in order for the cylinder to come out. so you may be out of luck regardless. If that's the case, carefully drilling out the cylinder may be your only choice.
I followed this video and it was perfect. Pay close attention to the added screen shot wording where he writes the message about the 7th tumbler. I messed this up because I wasn’t clear in which end to count from. If you mess this part up your key will be stuck in the lock and you’ll be sad. His directions are clear but a better warning about this one critical step would have helped. I ended up having to remove the guts of my box 5 times to remove the key barrel and line all the closing and locking racks. Very frustrating
My desire is to purchase a sport tourer, but right now, money is tough, and unemployment is looming. However, I did find a very nice, low mileage 2006 K1200GT. I can only hope that after getting back to work, I'll be able to afford it. Anyway, I was thinking that I'd like a top case to go along with that bike, and looking around, I went to Shad's site. Apparently, Shad makes the top boxes for BMW! So, while it won't have the BMW logo on it, you could get a very nice case, up to 50L in size, that should mount directly to that rack on both the older bikes, and the new RTs. Plus, for the 50L Shad box, AdMore also has a very nice lighting kit for running lights, turn signals and braking lights, all for less than the cost of a new BMW top box! I just hope I can find the money to get the bike. :p
+Gary C you will be very happy with the K12. My main riding partner runs a K13GT and he adores it. The SHAD is the number one alternative choice for these bikes. I have tried GIVI and SWM as well, and although they were perfectly functional, neither had the insulated inner liner that comes with the BMW box. Good luck with your employment situation-- hope to see you on the road.
Can someone help? I have an 04 BMW K1200GT with a JDEHA top case I am not the original owner and the key I received for the top case is plastic, as you might have guessed I managed to break the key. I'm looking for a new lock cylinder for the top case. I see Chris has located a new one in his video, does anyone have an idea where I might be able to locate one? I've tried several locksmiths and they can't help. Thanks
Unfortunately that might be a challenge as the shapes are different. However, with some ingenuity and the 2 parts side by side, I am sure there is a way.
Hi Chris, I got a brand new top case for my K1600GT and I think I made a mistake setting up the new lock and now the key is stuck into the cylinder and is not coming out. Do you know how to remove the cylinder ?
Hi. I have a R1200R 2012 and am trying to re-code the lock of my side bag. Take off the cylinder was easy. How to take off the tumblers from the cylinder?
Paulo Medeiros if it was the original cylinder from the factory you cannot remove the tumblers without a Dremel tool or grinder. However, I recommend buying a new cylinder kit
my key got bent when it was inserted into my left glove box and I moved the handlebars (2016 RT)....not real bad, but does anyone have an idea on how to straighten it without breaking it?
Chris, have you had any passengers that could comment on the comfort of the rear case as well as the efficency of the windscreen for the rear. thank you and great videos. Jason
Unfortunately the individual who rides in the back of this bike does so infrequently I don't think her opinion would be helpful. She simply says it's comfortable.
My dealer wanted a couple hours labor plus I had to agree if they damaged my top box removing old lock set they would not compensate for the damage. I have not re- keyed my old box. Do you know of any videos that show removable of old lock. Great video I want to try to do my old box I'm using on my 2015.
+Arnold Terkel yes-- as a matter of fact this is a common problem when people attempt to re-key or remove an old cylinder. There is a short-cut that many owners have used and it apparently works very well th-cam.com/video/CCJ677blYzM/w-d-xo.html I have never tried this method, but those who have swear by it. I believe the person who made the video built the tool out of a piece of hacksaw blade. But clearly it works well. Once the old cylinder is out, the rest is a piece of cake.
+William Barroso According to their website, that box will only fit up to a 2013. You can click on the link above and peruse the site to see if they have a newer model available. Good luck.

+keilwerth29 I wouldn't worry too much. Both bikes are excellent. You really can't go wrong either way and in the grand scheme of things they are very much alike.
Great video! I recently purchased the deluxe, powered topcase from KFM in Germany, only to realize the power socket wouldn't fit my wiring harness (since I didn't have central locking). Oh well, the entire box, plus the extra brake light only cost me $1050, as compared to $1600 at dealer. One problem, is the dealer added a lock cylinder for me, but it won't turn. They claim it has something to do with it being designed for central locking, but I think they just keyed it wrong. After watching, I'm guessing they put something in slot 7. Any idea how I can get that lock cylinder out of the deluxe case so I can verify that?

Now the key is stuck in the lock in the box and won't come out. :-( I'm hoping they can fix it without destroy the key or the box.
+Mark Metz it is a challenge, but you can get that out. The locksmith most likely used all the slots and didnt leave the empty slot. Normally you can get the key out, and then use the pick tool th-cam.com/video/CCJ677blYzM/w-d-xo.html Since the key is stuck, you will need to have a long drink of cool water, and attach a piece of wire to a long thin screwdriver and go into the case through the little twist cover in the video. Its challenging, but you can release the retainer this way by inserting this wire in through the hole on the side of the cylinder (the hole closest to the back of the bike).
+kiki231000 Thanks for the info. After several hours they managed to get it out and fixed. The key looks a little worse for the wear but still works on all the locks on the bike.
