@@cun7us there is no way cloud gaming costs Microsoft next to nothing. They have to optimize the software to run on custom Series S consoles specifically for the cloud and have servers everywhere to handle the load. xCloud performance is not solely dependent on WiFi speeds; it also heavily relies on the client's device capabilities. Contrary to popular belief, cloud gaming is not just streaming a video like TH-cam or Netflix. It requires robust h264 decoding performance. Testing on various devices using Edge, Kiwi, and Safari browsers showed that PCs and Macs (both AMD and Intel) had the best decode times (1-4ms), followed by iPhones and Samsung Galaxy devices with Exynos chips (4ms). Android phones with Snapdragon and MediaTek chips had slower times (26-30ms), with the worst performance observed on Android TV (112ms). xCloud performance and quality could be enhanced if Xbox will increase the bitrate limit and adding support for h265.

I've never been successful at doing streaming gaming on any console, so far. While my internet speed has gotten better. It is around 200mb, and the best available for the city I live in. The issue is that game streaming does not equal video streaming. I can stream 4K content but it ONLY works because the buffer allows for various drops in internet speed. Game Streaming requires none of those drops or pauses to happen ever. Thing is, drops that kill the game connection where it totally messes up for whole seconds or even to the point it just disconnects with an error, happen all the time. I can't even play a short game session without that happening. It's been guaranteed that I have a bad experience each time I attempt to use it.

I think the point being missed in all of the messaging is that Microsoft/Xbox want to cater to each market. Hardcore gamers will always buy physical systems so long as they’re available. No casualties gamer is going to boot up Game Pass on their Fire Stick and complain that the fidelity doesn’t match the Series X that they don’t even own.
Of course for us, it’s a big deal. But my gf didn’t start playing games until we started dating. She had a 27” TV. She plays games like Stardew Valley and Grounded, and doesn’t care about streaming issues at all. The only time she gets frustrated is when the game lags to the point that she gets hit by an enemy because of it. That has happened rare enough to the point that she doesn’t care.
She hasn’t touched the Xbox I bought her since I introduced XCloud to her. The point is that there is a solution for every type of gamer. Streaming, PC, Series X, Series S, and soon, probably handheld. I appreciate having so many options.

I think that part of the point of this is to get people into Xbox and then offer them 'superior' options. Many may be Casual and that is enough for them for the 'cost' of the Subscription fee but for others, it could be their 'entry' point in. If they want a 'better' experience with Games they can download and play natively on Hardware, they have a 'cheap' ish option (Series S) and a PS5 equivalent with their Series X - various models of Both to suit budget.
They also have Handheld PC's for the 'mobile' market and don't need a 'High' end Pro/Elite Console to 'compete' with PC's on Visual Quality/Performance options as PC already offers that. It's not as if Microsoft Windows isn't the 'common' factor between Xbox/PC and as both are Microsoft, they BOTH have all the Microsoft owned Games Day/Date - have since 2017 Sea of Thieves. That's been nearly a decade now and you 'didn't' need a XB1 S/X to play MS games after that.
Even without 'Streaming', you don't need an Xbox because MS release everything on 'PC's' so can play on a handheld PC at 'Console Prices. Most can connect an eGPU to boost performance and dock to a 4k TV - with DLSS as well to get the Visual quality at a Frame Rate you want. MS could release a Surface Handheld PC with thunderbolt port for 3rd Party eGPU's to 'dock' to Monitors/TV's for better performance on higher res displays...

In a controlled ecosystem they don't need to innovate. They can drip feed garbage day one as long as you pay for their subscription service. Their key franchises are dying. The only way (outside of DRM free on PC) for Gears and Halo to live on at a console level is for those games to get ported to Playstation where you can buy physical and digital as there are methods to preserve what you bought. I really don’t understand why there is such an issue with Sony’s game streaming. When I’ve tried many streaming services in the past, they all had lag and poor compression artifacts. However, whenever I play a PlayStation 5 game via streaming on the PlayStation 5, I absolutely cannot tell that I’m streaming it. It looks exactly like it’s local, pixel for pixel, and there is absolutely zero lag. It is probably the most perfect streaming I’ve ever tried, so I just don’t understand why Alex is making faces about PlayStation 5 game streaming.
I’ve also tried Nvidia’s offering, and while it is very good, I get regular hitches. The PlayStation 5 is on par with it, although it lacks some features like 120 Hz. On the other hand, Xbox game streaming is absolutely the worst streaming experience I’ve ever had. It is extremely blocky and only 720p.
I have fiber optic 2 gigabit Internet, so that obviously plays a factor.

Consoles are a mean to an end: selling software. While a console is a one-time sale, people may spend more than what they spend on the hardware.
Saying that "you don't need an Xbox to play Xbox games" it doesn't mean that they are the dropping the console market. It means that people can skip what was holding them off from experiencing those games: affording the hardware. I know that not everyone in US or Europe can afford $500 for a console, but it's way more affordable than lots of other places, like every single country in South America, for example.

I can't even play a short gaming session without it grossly artifacting, pausing completely for seconds, and often with disconnects complaining about connections. Yeah, I can stream 4K movies easily, but it's because buffers save the day. Game streaming doesn't have that luxury, so I end up getting people making this discussion about a kind of gaming service I can't utilize. I'd literally have to completely move to whatever *lucky* place I could perhaps take advantage of.
Of course, there's no way THAT cost would be worth it. *Hey, I decided to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and uprooted my life, so I can do video game streaming. I guess I really "SAVED" so much money not buying that console or PC.*

Add to this all the reasons corporations have to favour streaming game services -- elimination of piracy, total control over mods, stable monthly revenues, low consumer buy-in, etc. -- and it becomes clear that all console manufacturers and the majority of publishers will eventually release games exclusively on streaming game services.

I’d actually like to see Xbox become more of a console next gen, and break away from being more PC. Specifically I’d like to see silicon focused around ML powered graphics which PCs don’t yet have (more exotic than what you’d find in an RTX GPU).

    It definitely is not.
People all over North America still complain about internet quality. What about other countries? Countries with worse internet then NA?
    This isn't smart

North America has some of the worst internet in the developed world. If you have worse than the US, you probably shouldn't be buying into cloud. Common sense isn't so common anymore though.

@@zxZethxz that's my point. If their biggest demographic doesn't have the required internet needed for this to work properly...well why is this even being discussed?
We are no where near a point where playing a mp match on cod as an example, over a streaming service, will ever be acceptable, let alone the preferred way to play

Cloud streaming in its current state is a supplemental feature, not the main focus. If you have an Xbox, you can now play it in another room. Until internet speeds and Wi-Fi latency improves for more people, this is how it will be. No one will only play via streaming when there are so many reasonably priced alternatives.

They seem to be moving away from the console market making buying an Xbox less appealing. Meanwhile they are increasing the price of Game Pass with worse tiers and a subpar streaming service making that service less appealing.
What in the world is going on over there at Microsoft? For people that identify as “gamers” they seem clueless, even for corporate suits they seem clueless.

The quality on the fire stick is not bad, but for a cheaper display and stereo sound. If you want higher resolution, HDR. 5.1 sound VRR you want the console.

Microsoft itself steadily grew in the background behind Apple and Amazon to overtake them in valuation almost entirely from its SAAS and services library. There's zero doubt Xbox will be a service platform within 5-8 years. They will essentially hold their studios ransom.
