It would've also been awesome seeing older drummers using them too, i mean they didn't have the technology like gopro's in the 70's and 80's, but imagine Bonham or Mitchell using something like this, that would've been awesome!
PhoenixTV He kinda reminds me of the kids banging out rudiments and Independence exercises behind PIT in Hollywood before class. Trying to get that Weckle and Caliuta vibe going...
I think the most interesting thing about this is the GoPro 'aspect'. If you're a drummer watching from the perspective of the GoPro on his chest (in his mouth lol) it just tells you so much more about HOW he's doing what he's doing. Very interesting new tech(relatively new). This definitely could be used as a valuable teaching tool. It's twice as illuminating as a camera from behind the drummer even. It just puts you right there on the throne. I want more GoPro drummin vids!
Yamaha Recording Customs, baby. In the 80's everyone used them. They aren't really popular these days, but this is a good example of why I and many others still use them. No other drums have the punch that these do.
LanceCampeau They sound shite! But to Carter's defense, its mostly a combination of MP3 and audio not suited for anything like public ears. Why even allow this up, the camera's perspective from his mouth? WTF?
Jojo Mayer I love you man if you are who you claim but geez, heavy compression artifacts and overall unacceptable sound, here. Not a good representation of what RCs were about. Listen to Gadd from then or Robinson. You're not really Jojo are you?
Jojo Mayer i have a 70s vintage Ludwig kit that sound identical to this. I have them set up and hardly play them. I don’t want to beat on them haha. I play/gig my OCDP kit. They are ridiculously expensive and sound great too.
TheBrizz71 I'm not too sure if it's the case now, but he used to extra thin resonant heads on bottom side of his toms. This would enhance the punch, attack and tone up front, but with a faster decay.
GoPro I think it's time for another Carter Beauford video or, at least, another drumming video. They always get SO much attention from everyone, not just the drumming community.
He's a right handed drummer playing open handed. ALOT of his kit is uninterrupted and that's why he can make things sound that way so effortlessly. He's definitely my favorite drummer of all time and one could argue the best.
I always skip TH-cam ads as fast as possible. But when this one came up on an unrelated video, I stopped to watch the whole damn thing, then visited their site. THIS is how you do an ad.
Nah, just requires more wires and a computer and a recording software. I think GP just wants to show off their kinda decent audio quality for what kind of camera it is.
d3tach3d It's unlistenable even on a phone speaker. I can't believe this garbage and misrepresentative production passed GoPro's PR. They only demonstrated how appalling their microphone on this camera is when you strap it to a drummer's mouth guard. But by all means, change the camera angles to different recording devices and don't use the already setup music studio to represent a professional musician that you paid for a promotional video...
Lando Cartel not really. Pretty much any drummer can pull off all the single strokes and flams, hertas he does up-and-down the toms and the rolls with all the symbol accents but it takes a really talented drummer to pull off a Groove that people can get down with and really feel
I don't disagree bro...skills and talent are super important, yet STYLE and groove is really where it's at! I think the best drummers are the one's who are technically proficient AND have groove. Balance :)
If you tune a drum correctly it sounds like this, but if you put your toms back on your drums they cant swing as much as if you hold them. You could use like pearl optimount wich are connected to the rim, so it can swing and doesn't kill the resonance. Sorry for my bad English.
After reading a few comments, I will say this...this drummer is phenomenal! Is he the best drummer ever? You can't say there's one ultimate drummer because each one is unique in their style of play, as with every musician. So, all in all, Carter is sensational in his own way. Don't compare him to Travis Barker or Joey Jordison or whomever. Remember, each musician is unique in their style of play.
Everyone in this band is incredibly under rated. Carter Beauford is rightfully the 10th greatest drummer of all time (Rolling Stone). He's grown on me a lot.
This is so beautiful!! This view really needs to catch on with drummers, it shows the world our art from our own perspective. Now it just needs video of the feet
Except Danny is cerebrally and by proxy, creatively coming from a different plane of expression. How fortunate of him to hit the combination of bandmates to contribute to such expression. Carter just to me seems plugged into the ramblings of a hippy band. Not even a tremendous asset to each other, seems like after all these years they should have evolved imo.
Scotty Doesn't Know Volto started out as Danny's NAMM pick up band but really carry the torch for Return To Forever and Mahavishnu Orc. They were like the house band at The Baked Potato for awhile there and you could here them lay it down every week!
TH-cam: 2012: NAAAA 2013: Im good 2014:maybeeeeee 2015: Dis video still ain't gonna do it 2016:lose but no cigar 2017: this is modern day stuff her c'mon 2018: WASGOOD 2019: Let's reccomend this 8 year old video to some random person. Me: REALLY.
390+ People came to see / hear an awesome drummer, and instead got dizzy. It would be a nice effect , for about 5 seconds, then back to "real video". This isn't friggin "District 9", ..or Cops.. its an awesome drummer, the video should reflect that, not make people feel like vomiting. JMO?
Carter is amazing! Some of the timing things along with some other, more subtle, sounds just make this incredible. I wish the sound quality was better so you could really hear exactly what he was doing! If you really watch, it's obvious how much was lost due to poor recording. But, that has nothing to do with Carter. He killed it! I've been a musician for 16 years and I can tell ya this..... any drummer who disagrees, is just jealous. ;-)
I really liked this "solo". However, it wasnt that great. He was playing singles, doubles and flams all arround the drums, there wasnt any insteresting groove :/. I think this was a warm up rather than a solo. Just my opinion, not hating!
P-tom Richi ...well if you think its just as simple as you say....by all means post some of your singles and doubles and flams so we can comment your playing ability
Carter is my fav drummer this just shows off his skills. But he keeps the house rocking when dave comes in town. You can say hes got the the dope beats to cause this just shows off his speed.
+jijst5 Not... really. He was using insane technique, and just... shit, you play that. I know the drums. I could never hope to replicate it-- He killed it
The main thing that bothers me, is the fact that there doesn't seem to be any structure. I even doubt he was thinking in measures, it's probably just a bunch of licks, fills, techniques... played after eachother.
Maybe, but this solo is just really bad. Of course I don't expect him to have one orchestrated to his highest ability. Still, anyone as famous as him should be able to make music even on the fly, not just go apeshit with the most basic stickings conceivable.
"Sorry, but..." You ain't sorry, lol. This ain't a competition. Look at how much each drummer adds to the knowledge of drumming and overall happiness of those who enjoy and appreciate their music. And imagine how many drummers we will never know about who were much better than both... Just enjoy. Just enjoy.
I think because on top of the head would have missed the snare and lower drums. You only just see them as it is. I like this. We see so many stationary drum shots of Carter... this is something new.
to say someone is the greatest only stirs emotion, passion for YOUR favorite drummer and therefore stirs controversy. some say Buddy Rich for jazz and speed, others Neil Peart for technicaity on 30+drum set for 40 years!!.., others Dany Carey, others have Bonham cause they love Zeppelin, others Keith Moon close to their heart for their crushing power and originality, like animal from sesame street, Carl Palmer in his 70's is UNBELIEVABLE etc etc. We could argue for centuries who's the GOAT but it comes down to simply what band/person you personally, emotionally are attached to because of their songs that stuck with you and touch your heart for decades until now. That's who you'll fight for. there are plenty of phenomenal drummers that we don't even know of in jazz bands etc that are incredible but we fight for the ones that touch our heart/nostalgia.
Pretty cool technology dude. I have been wondering for years how to get a better perspective on the kit. Perfect venue. At least it puts the lens closer to the the actual line of axis between the focal point of the camera and the line of sight in the lens of the eye.
It's not about comparing the basic skills of each professional drummer. You're right in that they all are close in basic skills with a few physiological standouts (royster jr.). Carter was doing something no one else was doing in pop music when he surfaced with poly rhythms and paved the way for more exploration. All the greats contributed something new to drumming that no one else was doing at the time to create a unique voice. Compare drummers on what they contribute to albums, not solos.
I'm glad Carter's got a sense of humor. If I'd have been asked to hold a camera in my mouth while throwing my arms all over the place, I'd have said F-off. My 17yo kid looks silly enough riding with a Hero latched onto the top of his helmet on the motocross track. If he turned it sideways, he'd look like a shark. On the other hand, he gets some great on-track video. Having said that, I'm glad to see Carter still has it going on. Props to him. And, full screen DOES make you feel like the boss!
Danny Carey needs to use one of these
Interesting seeing a comment from you here, haha!
It would've also been awesome seeing older drummers using them too, i mean they didn't have the technology like gopro's in the 70's and 80's, but imagine Bonham or Mitchell using something like this, that would've been awesome!
I never thought I would see jacksepticeye here lmaoo
There's the drum cam now. Not a go pro, but it's still pretty cool!
Woah Jack!
He’s such a well rounded drummer in every way possible. But the thing that blows me away the most is how fast his hands are. It’s insane.
POWER
This dude has some of the cleanest single stroke rolls of anyone, legend is right
carte beauford, in my opinion is one of the greatest drummers of all time.
PhoenixTV
He kinda reminds me of the kids banging out rudiments and Independence exercises behind PIT in Hollywood before class. Trying to get that Weckle and Caliuta vibe going...
I definitely don’t think so
So THAT'S how he made 40 million dollars ! Thanks peter, I'm signing up at PIT first thing in the morning !
He is one the best drummers of our time
Absolutely is
Drum solos are fun and all but Carter's genius is the way he fits his virtuosity into the song and makes it fit perfectly
This is exactly why in my opinion, he is the greatest drummer of all time
Agreed.
Check out Papa Jo Jones..
Papa…
Carter
Danny
Brian Mantia
Travis Barker. 90’s 🫡🔥
Chris Dave
Those toms sounds badass even recorded through the crappy gopro audio. Punchy!
Yamaha Recording Customs, baby. In the 80's everyone used them. They aren't really popular these days, but this is a good example of why I and many others still use them. No other drums have the punch that these do.
LanceCampeau
They sound shite! But to Carter's defense, its mostly a combination of MP3 and audio not suited for anything like public ears. Why even allow this up, the camera's perspective from his mouth? WTF?
Jojo Mayer

Jojo Mayer i have a 70s vintage Ludwig kit that sound identical to this. I have them set up and hardly play them. I don’t want to beat on them haha. I play/gig my OCDP kit. They are ridiculously expensive and sound great too.
First thing I noticed. The toms were singing!!!
I love the sound of his toms. So much punch.
Cool configuration too.
Yeah man those things have some crazy attack.
Steven Turner nice profile picture man
TheBrizz71 I'm not too sure if it's the case now, but he used to extra thin resonant heads on bottom side of his toms. This would enhance the punch, attack and tone up front, but with a faster decay.
i'm the opposite, to me they sound cheesey
Can I please see Carter Beauford perform with a metal band!?!??! How amazing would that be?!?!? ALL HAIL CARTER! THis is so amazing.
Best drummer ever. His timing perfect and effortless.
One of the best. This guy is one of the influences that got me to play drums 15 years ago.
Pete Mazza is that rite
GoPro I think it's time for another Carter Beauford video or, at least, another drumming video. They always get SO much attention from everyone, not just the drumming community.
Listening to Carter on drums makes me very happy.
When the Stig is not driving, he is drumming
words of wisdom!xD
hahaha Indeed
And that’s how you do it! Never fails to blow my mind! Carter is the GOAT in my humble opinion.
you start to appreciate his drumming when you listen to band's live performance..
He's a right handed drummer playing open handed. ALOT of his kit is uninterrupted and that's why he can make things sound that way so effortlessly. He's definitely my favorite drummer of all time and one could argue the best.
Now he can't blow his bubbles!!
The ONLY ad on TH-cam I watched ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Great drummer, man!
I
I always skip TH-cam ads as fast as possible. But when this one came up on an unrelated video, I stopped to watch the whole damn thing, then visited their site.
THIS is how you do an ad.
would it have been to hard to actually get the mix from the mics?
Nah, just requires more wires and a computer and a recording software. I think GP just wants to show off their kinda decent audio quality for what kind of camera it is.
d3tach3d It's unlistenable even on a phone speaker. I can't believe this garbage and misrepresentative production passed GoPro's PR. They only demonstrated how appalling their microphone on this camera is when you strap it to a drummer's mouth guard. But by all means, change the camera angles to different recording devices and don't use the already setup music studio to represent a professional musician that you paid for a promotional video...
50 year old just started playing for fun! SO ENJOYABLE!
This should effectively dissolve a typical drummer's ego
Lando Cartel not really. Pretty much any drummer can pull off all the single strokes and flams, hertas he does up-and-down the toms and the rolls with all the symbol accents but it takes a really talented drummer to pull off a Groove that people can get down with and really feel
I don't disagree bro...skills and talent are super important, yet STYLE and groove is really where it's at! I think the best drummers are the one's who are technically proficient AND have groove. Balance :)
The kit is tuned soooo freakin nice . Toms are very resonate and the go pro is slamming.
If you tune a drum correctly it sounds like this, but if you put your toms back on your drums they cant swing as much as if you hold them. You could use like pearl optimount wich are connected to the rim, so it can swing and doesn't kill the resonance. Sorry for my bad English.
I love k custom ride sound, is amazing and shine plus that I like drum set with 6 or 7 toms to play
VERY UNDERRATED DRUMMER!
He's one of the greatest drummers in the world period. I don't think "underrated" applies here dude
Neil pert is better
you keep telling yourself that :)
Lol this guy wouldn't even be worthy to polish Neil's cymbals (:
Ya bro Neil Peart is the god of drumming. Hands down.
Everyone in this band is incredibly under rated. Carter Beauford is rightfully the 10th greatest drummer of all time (Rolling Stone). He's grown on me a lot.
I don't really feel like soloing is Carter's strongpoint, but the dude has a feel for the pocket in a song unlike any other.
He seems like a great drummer but that solo was pretty borring. It was basically just a snare roll with a few toms thrown in.
This was never meant to be a solo beat, it’s a warm up that they rolled into the front of a song.
This is so beautiful!!
This view really needs to catch on with drummers, it shows the world our art from our own perspective. Now it just needs video of the feet
hands down...Carter & Danny Carey from Tool are my favs
Have you heard VOLTO! ? Awesome heavy fusion band. Danny's in it. They are amazing live.
Scotty Doesn't Know
Volto started out as Danny's NAMM pick up band but really carry the torch for Return To Forever and Mahavishnu Orc. They were like the house band at The Baked Potato for awhile there and you could here them lay it down every week!
Danny Carey Is mediocre. Carter would eat his dinner.
John vincent you clearly haven't listened closely enough. he's just as good as this guy
this is an ad i didnt mine watching the whole thing, havnt skipped it once yet to amazing!!!
Can you reupload this in 60 Frames Per Second now that youtube supports the feature? 30fps doesn't really show off the camera....
coolest drum vid ive seen ina Looooong time. Carter is the reason why I even play drums today.
Carter has enough chops for an entire one-man DCI drum off.
Best application of GoPro Everrrrrr! :)
Killer ...
I want to watch an entire Meshuggah show like this!!! Ohhhh! .... and Tool!
Dang watching Danny do his thing POV would be sick
Man those drums sound killer...nice deep full round tone! Great drummer! Great Band!:) Thanks for sharing!:)
Each song of Carter in Dave Matthews Band it's like a solo so he doesn't need to do good solos.
EXACTLY!!! Drumming is not a sport. It's a musical experience!
TH-cam:
2012: NAAAA
2013: Im good
2014:maybeeeeee
2015: Dis video still ain't gonna do it
2016:lose but no cigar
2017: this is modern day stuff her c'mon
2018: WASGOOD
2019: Let's reccomend this 8 year old video to some random person.
Me: REALLY.
absolutely unreal how good he is.
Sounds compressed and too lo-fi in my opinion. Like it's an 96 KByte/s .mp3
+Admiralex91 That's the onboard GoPro camera audio. It's gotten better on the more recent models.
+boobsmakemehappy1 the hero4 black has an awesome microphone
Definatly sound better if the case is taken off
Those drums sound beautiful.
Blair Witch drumming...got motion sickness. But Carter is da man!
Watched this several times, just awesome! I'm inspired by his mastery of the single stroke roll.
Damn that is impressive, I really wish I had a drum set to do this at home
Great Idea ! I never saw someone show a drum solo like that! Excelent!
When you see his hi-hat work and realize you should just quit drumming
when you see his hi-hat work and realize you should continue drumming
I love his tom setup so much, I might actually try that
390 dislikes were because of an emotion called "envy"
666 Horsepower Nah I'm pretty sure it's because of the awful audio quality from the gopro
JMO?
I disliked because this “solo” actually isn’t very good.
@@VictorCardena3 Pfft. I bet your ass couldn't even hold drumsticks properly let alone use a practice pad.
The guy is always moving! What a busy drummer... I like it!
seems more like joey jordison than dmb
What a cool way to show off the drums! Great Solo!
It so great that you found a way to make Carter Beauford's drumming even more nauseating.
One of my fav drummers, great video
Lol anyone could do that NOT! Amazing 😀
lets see you do that jackass
U really should put a comma in there
*****
OK. Then show us how it's done. If it' "wasn't that complex of a drum solo". Let's see your CHOPS? Put up or STFU!
Yeah, let's see it pal, post it and send us a link and see how you do!
Nathan McNally Dallas Breault guys im pretty sure he ment, anyonone coulddo that (comma) NOT. Just lack of comma makes the misunderstanding
He makes the band great..what a force to be reckoned with...more bass drum please
Potato sound quality.
The Rusty Slav It's a gopro.
I know. That doesnt mean the sound quality isnt aids.
The Rusty Slav Alright. Whatever.
even with better sound quality the drums would still sound like this
Carter is amazing! Some of the timing things along with some other, more subtle, sounds just make this incredible. I wish the sound quality was better so you could really hear exactly what he was doing! If you really watch, it's obvious how much was lost due to poor recording. But, that has nothing to do with Carter. He killed it! I've been a musician for 16 years and I can tell ya this..... any drummer who disagrees, is just jealous. ;-)
Soulless solo
DanLobboDrummer STFU
DanLobboDrummer youre right on cash..Tasteless..
damn 7 years ago and i still remember watching this when it first came out for gopro hahaha
I really liked this "solo". However, it wasnt that great. He was playing singles, doubles and flams all arround the drums, there wasnt any insteresting groove :/. I think this was a warm up rather than a solo. Just my opinion, not hating!
It's not necessarily a solo. This is the drum intro to "Say Goodbye".
It's an intro to one of their songs not a solo.
It's an intro and a way to warm up. No hate!
P-tom Richi what solo u play smartass?
P-tom Richi ...well if you think its just as simple as you say....by all means post some of your singles and doubles and flams so we can comment your playing ability
Unbelievable!!!! This man is 55 years old. Keep playin strong Carter, see ya in December!
The sound of the snare is disgusting..... so many armonics
I'm sorry your hearing is bad, sir.
i,m all rigth my friend
That's weird. 2 of your 5 senses are acting wonky! Need some help?
oh nonon, when you borned ... i was playing drums..... you have to learn so much before talk to a master like me.
Sir, if I may say, you totally redeemed yourself. I award you infinite points. Forever.
Go pro... the best!!! Congratulations Dave Matthews Band's Carter Beauford Drum Solo......... crazy....
Great drummer, absolutely atrocious sound...maybe too high spl for Gopros? Sounds like a compressed early mp3...Anyhow, who really cares?!
It's an old gopro
Just enjoy it
Carter is my fav drummer this just shows off his skills. But he keeps the house rocking when dave comes in town. You can say hes got the the dope beats to cause this just shows off his speed.
We all know he's a very good drummer, but can we agree that this "solo" had almost no musicality, and the sound sucked too?
+jijst5 Not... really. He was using insane technique, and just... shit, you play that. I know the drums. I could never hope to replicate it-- He killed it
Yeah it's awesome. But no musicality. Unlike gospel drummers, awesome players.
i agree with you.
The main thing that bothers me, is the fact that there doesn't seem to be any structure. I even doubt he was thinking in measures, it's probably just a bunch of licks, fills, techniques... played after eachother.
+jijst5 Yeah, it out of context funk/fusion mastrubation. Unfortunately he tends to graft the same vocabulary over simple hippie rock songs. Yuk.
those toms sound so good! i want that set so bad!
Bad solo, no musicality and not even that impressive
^^There's always this guy in the comments of a drum solo vid^^
Maybe, but this solo is just really bad. Of course I don't expect him to have one orchestrated to his highest ability. Still, anyone as famous as him should be able to make music even on the fly, not just go apeshit with the most basic stickings conceivable.
The Pepster idiot
Blake Sexton no this is actually really bad, if you were a drummer also you’d know.
The Pepster This was more like tasteless stuff really..yawn
omg these drums sound absolutely brilliant!!!
Sorry but....Neil Peart is BETTER.
Fanboy
Why do you say that. I'm not disagreeing with you
I just want to know what you based your opinion on.
"Sorry, but..." You ain't sorry, lol. This ain't a competition. Look at how much each drummer adds to the knowledge of drumming and overall happiness of those who enjoy and appreciate their music. And imagine how many drummers we will never know about who were much better than both... Just enjoy. Just enjoy.
I love how his floor toms are set up, I need to try that!
Carter Beauford is a master of triplet and syncopated notes. It makes his beats sound more human.
Someone give this man a medal.
you can never go wrong with this Carter!
What a cool point of View! Interresanter Ausblick! Great!!!
Love that snare/hi hat interplay around 2:20. Carter is the MAN!
Awesome drummer. Dave should be honored.
I am a drummer myself, and I like this video very much!
I think because on top of the head would have missed the snare and lower drums. You only just see them as it is. I like this. We see so many stationary drum shots of Carter... this is something new.
Just enjoy the man for the superb drummer that he is what's with the comparisons each has his own unique style.
the only youtube ad i never skipped.
to say someone is the greatest only stirs emotion, passion for YOUR favorite drummer and therefore stirs controversy. some say Buddy Rich for jazz and speed, others Neil Peart for technicaity on 30+drum set for 40 years!!.., others Dany Carey, others have Bonham cause they love Zeppelin, others Keith Moon close to their heart for their crushing power and originality, like animal from sesame street, Carl Palmer in his 70's is UNBELIEVABLE etc etc.
I live 45 minutes from where the Dave Matthews Band grew up, and currently live.
Pretty cool technology dude. I have been wondering for years how to get a better perspective on the kit. Perfect venue. At least it puts the lens closer to the the actual line of axis between the focal point of the camera and the line of sight in the lens of the eye.
He has always had the best singles out there!
Those cymbal crossovers had me rolling, Carter’s fuckin hilarious dude what a chill guy
This guy is the greatest drummer of all time. One BAD MAMA-JAMMA!
Understatement:
Man's got talent.
His kit sounds amazing!
Got my GoPro because of this video.
WOW. I don't know how he does it. Carter blows my mind every time he plays.
Carter Forever !!!
My favourite drummer, he's awesome ! DMB rules !!
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
That´s wonderful. I love my Hero 2!
Good stuff, very good!
