I saw lots of people already explained the carrying pole thingy those gentlemen used. Also you couldn't possible communicate with them via translation app, simpley because they spoke with such strong chongqing accents that the app couldn't pick it up as proper mandarin. And those five minutes had to be the most interesting most hiarious part throughout the entire trip!

You should really file a complaint to the Alipay's customer service, the issue you encountered is clearly some sort of software bug, I traveled across China and never needed to re-input my information, the app will ask me to change the city though...
the annoying transportation issue you mentioned is not just for foreigners, chinese people also have to live with it. what caused the problem is chines is a big and hugely populated country, it's very hard to implement a single unified transportation policy across the whole country so every province develop their own. good news is, some of the major cities in the east and south part of china, like Guangdong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, even Hong Kong are developing compatible transportation protocols, and more and more cities will join.
Last part of the video showing the underground tunnel is a very typical ChongQing scene. The underground tunnels are your basic underground road crossing with some shopfronts.

If you don't really like this city, then most other cities can be a bit boring tho (very repetitive imo) Not sure what you guys like. Chongqing is surrounded by magnificent landscapes and a dare devil theme park. If you like highlands then visit Tibet. If you like deserts, dune buggies and camels and the Muslims quarters visit Xi'an and the surrounding province and also inner Mongolia. If like Winter wonderland and Russian border, visit Harbin and Heihe, if you like sea food, visit coastal provinces. If you like delicious Cantonese food, visit Guangdong province. If you like beautiful landscape, jungles, ethnic minority villages and very unique food visit Guangxi and Yunnan province. If you like central-asial/middle eastern vibe visit Xinjiang. and ofc visit Beijing (for peking duck, forbidden city great wall) although Beijing normally takes many days.

The white fruit taste like nothing because it's technically not 'fruit', but more like a vegetable🤣we normally use it in soup. It is the stem of a water plant called Biqi or 荸荠 But I do like its unique flavor, very mild but refreshing...
As south east Asian, I got used to eat it raw like that when small. If newborn baby got jaundice, it is recommended to extract the juice and let the baby drink. 😂 While our parent use it in broth and soup

When I was in China by October this year all I need to do for different city subway is just change the city that's it I am using my usa passport along with my credit card it works very well hope you like the city and others
the only bad thing about chongqing is the weather, 100 fog days a year and only around 30 days of sunshine, but this is to do with the geography which is also the reason why chongqing is so cool(the mountainess terain) so i guess its a con for a pro
No disrespect is intended by this, but If you're travelling to Chongqing, please do your research. You can purchase an 'IC' card at most metro stations in the city. You can top the card up with cash at the information centres inside metro stations to whatever balance you wish. The QR code on the back of the card can then be scanned when entering and exiting the station, just like you would on the London underground. I second the suggestion of making a local friend/guide as this city becomes infinitely more beautiful when you can understand the 'why'.
Interestingly, other vloggers don't mention that you have to reset the registration for Alipay from city to city in China. Yes, it makes sense for one 'universal' setting - for convenience.

We ended up using the google translate app to scan things to figure out what they are. The first “fruit” you tried is called 荸荠 or 马蹄 (horse’ hoof). By googling it’s apparently called “Chinese water chestnut”. It’s kind in the middle of fruit and vegetables. It’s quite popular in some southern China areas, some people appreciate its very light and fresh flavor.
The “worm” 😅 in your potato snack I believe is 鱼腥草 or 折耳根. It’s a plant root with very strong flavor. It’s only available and appreciated in southwestern areas. A lot of Chinese cannot stand it, but some like it very much. It’s believed to cool down the heat/flame inside your body and keep you healthy.
The bamboo stick is not for smoking or as a weapon. It’s for carrying heavy package or load on the shoulder. The people with it do it as charged service. It was very popular and actually important for Chongqing’s unique mountain slopes. I thought it had died down with modern transportation, but guess I was wrong.

Those white things are water chestnuts. They might be a bit bland to people who generally consumes a lot of sugar (taste is a threshold, and like alcohol and drug tolerance if you taste too strong a flavour over time eventually your sense of taste gets dull), but they are great cooking ingredients. Very faint aroma that gets amplified in things such as soup and sugary beverages.
This is a popular fruit in our city because it has a lot of water, it is crunchy and not very sweet and you will not be afraid of gaining weight if you eat too much.

Low level clouds perhaps? we have similar from time to time in Hobart (Tasmania) around the mountain tops and in valleys in some country regions of the state of Victoria (Australia) - very misty and "fairy-like".

CQ doesn't cost much! Flights excluded, with a budget as low as 2000 yuan you can manage a week without difficulties. Actually in my last 2 visits I spent a daily average below 100 yuan each day(food, transport, residence all included) while living in an pretty hostel around Foreign consulates.

I saw lots of people already explained the carrying pole thingy those gentlemen used. Also you couldn't possible communicate with them via translation app, simpley because they spoke with such strong chongqing accents that the app couldn't pick it up as proper mandarin. And those five minutes had to be the most interesting most hiarious part throughout the entire trip!
As a traveler to more than 80 countries, I applaud you guys for just heading headlong into adventure. So cool. Definitely don’t be afraid to find local guides. Not scammers but people who are keen to show you around and translate a bit. Other TH-camrs. Or IG folks. Street touts aren’t the deal. Rock on you two!

I may be wrong but what you guys had been eating - the white crunchy, sweet stuff that taste like apple, it looks to me like water chestnut. Nornally, it had a black, slightly hard skin but the interior is white.
The shuttered shops at the end may be art galleries. They'll come alive in the weekends and festivals, etc. That's my guess. And the old man you talked to was a porter. The bamboo pole was for carrying stuffs, not a weapon.

You should really file a complaint to the Alipay's customer service, the issue you encountered is clearly some sort of software bug, I traveled across China and never needed to re-input my information, the app will ask me to change the city though...

the annoying transportation issue you mentioned is not just for foreigners, chinese people also have to live with it. what caused the problem is chines is a big and hugely populated country, it's very hard to implement a single unified transportation policy across the whole country so every province develop their own. good news is, some of the major cities in the east and south part of china, like Guangdong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, even Hong Kong are developing compatible transportation protocols, and more and more cities will join.
Last part of the video showing the underground tunnel is a very typical ChongQing scene. The underground tunnels are your basic underground road crossing with some shopfronts.
Hangzhou (not far from Shanghai) is a very beautiful tourist destination in China
Chongqing is much older than Alan, by a few thousand years. The "birthday" of Chongqing that Alan quoted was actually the day Chongqing became a city directly under the administration of the central government in Beijing, instead of under Sichuan province where the city is actually located. Think of Washington DC. Although it's in Virginia, it's not part of the state of Virginia; instead DC is its own special district.
I was puzzled by what Allan said because I know that Chinese government moved to Chogqing during WWII because Japan invaded Nanking, which was the capital. Now, what you said totally makes sense.

I always believe Chongqing is a very unique place to visit. There is no city like this one. If you don't really like this city, then most other cities can be a bit boring tho (very repetitive imo)
Not sure what you guys like. Chongqing is surrounded by magnificent landscapes and a dare devil theme park.
If you like highlands then visit Tibet. If you like deserts, dune buggies and camels and the Muslims quarters visit Xi'an and the surrounding province and also inner Mongolia. If like Winter wonderland and Russian border, visit Harbin and Heihe, if you like sea food, visit coastal provinces. If you like delicious Cantonese food, visit Guangdong province. If you like beautiful landscape, jungles, ethnic minority villages and very unique food visit Guangxi and Yunnan province. If you like central-asial/middle eastern vibe visit Xinjiang. and ofc visit Beijing (for peking duck, forbidden city great wall) although Beijing normally takes many days.
OMG it was so fun to see you guys communicate with the guy who does carrying work. That’s a special work in Chongqing since it has lots of difficult mountain works and ports. They do the heavy work for the passengers.

Highly recommend you to go to Guangxi province, specifically Guilin/Yangshuo. Very different from all the big chinese cities you’ve been to so far

The white fruit taste like nothing because it's technically not 'fruit', but more like a vegetable🤣we normally use it in soup. It is the stem of a water plant called Biqi or 荸荠 But I do like its unique flavor, very mild but refreshing...
As south east Asian, I got used to eat it raw like that when small. If newborn baby got jaundice, it is recommended to extract the juice and let the baby drink. 😂 While our parent use it in broth and soup

the only bad thing about chongqing is the weather, 100 fog days a year and only around 30 days of sunshine, but this is to do with the geography which is also the reason why chongqing is so cool(the mountainess terain) so i guess its a con for a pro

No disrespect is intended by this, but If you're travelling to Chongqing, please do your research. You can purchase an 'IC' card at most metro stations in the city. You can top the card up with cash at the information centres inside metro stations to whatever balance you wish. The QR code on the back of the card can then be scanned when entering and exiting the station, just like you would on the London underground. I second the suggestion of making a local friend/guide as this city becomes infinitely more beautiful when you can understand the 'why'.
Chong Qing is basically built on top of the mountains, a lot of climbing ups and downs.

Chongqing is a very exciting and adventurous city. It is famous for being a city built on mountains. Whether it is urban construction, scenery and food, it is absolutely unforgettable. It is completely different from other places. It is worth visiting many times. Chengdu near it is also a charming city, which is another kind of experience
I love water chestnuts, and I like eating them raw, just like you guys did. I think they have a subtle but delicious flavour. Much better than apples, in my opinion.

Go to Shibati (18 steps) which is a restored traditional area of shopping and eating. Also cross the bridge at the end, you get a spectacular view from the more quiet side. PS For the people living inside the train building, they had to soundproof all the apartments
You guys remind me of my recent trip to the Netherlands. Sure they speak English there but hardly anything is labeled in English when you walk into a store/supermarket. We ended up using the google translate app to scan things to figure out what they are. Perhaps you should use some similar app too because you literally walked into a building with a sign saying that non-residents are not allowed in.

We have got a typical problem caused by the language barrier here at 20:42. The “weapon” is actually a working tool used for carrying things around. I got so uneasy and helpless when I watched this scene. That feeling of knowing the truth but unable to help and helplessly watching the problem unfolds is both intense and hilarious.
Also, how can the government allow somebody to sit by the street and blatantly carry a weapon and everyone just walked by as if nothing had happened?
