    So, what do you think? Why weren't the House Elves used in the Harry Potter films? Was it because they lacked importance to the overall story or was it just simply because they were too hard to animate? Let me know down in the comment!
    Can you find it in your heart to forgive Warner Brothers for not including Kreacher's Tale in the films? Because I sure can't!!!

    Actually, I think them cutting out the house elves RUINED the romance!!! In books, I loved that Hermione kissed Ron for the first time because he showed that he cared about the house elves, which was incredibly important to her and which, up to that point, Ron had scoffed at her for caring for it. In the films they kissed.... just because??? I don't understand what cued them to kiss. Honestly, it's completely rubbish in the films, it didn't make me want to dance with glee that they were finally together, no, it made me stare at the screen in confusion and feel very thrown off.

      @nbriggs133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      And scenes like that didn't even require house elves, just talking about them. Same thing with SPEW technically, though that would be harder to pull off without at least the first winky scene to give clear reason's for hermione's sudden crusade.

      Thats a terrible argument against anything when they are creating scenes like the dancing scene in deathly hallows or the burrow being attacked and burned in half-blood prince. Those scenes not only didn't even exist but also have nothing to do with the overall plot of defeating voldemort. If the filmmakers were actually being disciplined and not creating/changing scenes and events then I would totally agree that obviously non-essential stuff will end up being cut out, but its much harder to justify cutting things when they can apparently find the time to squeeze in entirely new scenes just as superfluous.

    • @Inkyminkyzizwoz
      @Inkyminkyzizwoz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well, those were probably the only bits they put in that weren't in the books, and yes if they had left them out then that could've left enough time to include more of Dumbledore's theory as to what the Horcruxes might have been (which was about the only thing I did have a problem with them cutting out, as that was pretty crucial), but most of the rest of it I could live with

    • @Casutama
      @Casutama 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Did burning the Burrow down affect the overall plot of defeating Voldemort? Did Harry and Hermione slow dancing affect the overall plot of defeating Voldemort? Did the extremely strange scene between Harry and Ginny in the Room of Requirement affect the overall plot of defeating Voldemort? (And I don't even dislike that pairing!)
      However, should Voldemort's backstory have been vital in defeating Voldemort? Hell yes! And the S.P.E.W. story arch develops Hermione's character critically, because it provides us with the source of her bravery and her reason for wanting to fight and defeat Voldemort: not in order to slow-dance, but to stand up for the downtrodden.

    I really hoped they'd include the scene in Deathly Hallows when Lupin bursts in all happy to tell them all that the baby has been born...and also the scene in DH when Lupin and Harry have an argument. I loved those two scenes and because of them being left out Lupin didn't really have that much impact since people who haven't read the books don't understand how scared he was of going into a relationship with Tonks and having a child and then how elated he was when Teddy was born. #Lupinthelegend

    This is something that has always annoyed me! The movies leave out so much important information... Kreacher, Dobby, and Winky's storylines were either cut completely, or hardly had any screentime. Then of course there's the classic Peeves issue. I love the movies so much, but there's nothing like cracking open a Harry Potter book and taking in all the details of the wizarding world

      Honestly I think the movies do a fine job up until half-blood prince. Sure they have to cut some things out as the books got longer but through the 5th movie they seem to do a good job of a least keeping the core story in and mostly just cutting out things which, while sad to not see, aren't super important to the main plot. Once you hit the 6th movie though the whole thing suddenly gets bogged down by romance to the extent that you really get pulled out of the main story. There's also an annoying trend in the final 3 movies of starting to drastically change how events actually play out instead of just cutting parts but otherwise copying the books.

    • @Inkyminkyzizwoz
      @Inkyminkyzizwoz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      About the only thing I had a problem with them cutting out was Dumbledore's theory as to what the Horcruxes might have been, as it left Harry and the others with virtually no leads! Pretty much everything else I could live with, because as you rightly say it didn't really affect the plot. I suppose it may have been an improvement to see more of Dumbledore's backstory with Grindelwald and Ariana, but I suspect the Fantastic Beasts films will cover a lot of that, especially since Grindelwald has already been established as the main antagonist of that series whereas the Harry Potter films don't explain his significance at all, other than that he stole the Elder Wand

    I'm pretty sure the goblins weren't CGI, they were little people with facial prosthesis; still difficult, but once they filmed the scenes it's pretty much done, whereas with house elves they have to do normal editing, and on top of that CGI the house elves into it.

    • @frogoat
      @frogoat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's correct. Granted the cost of all those prosthetics and what not must have cost a fair bit for so many actors. I think the only CG Goblin was Ron Pearlman in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Technically even Ron Pearlman was suprisingly minimal cgi. The major facial structure, most notably the jawline, is pretty much just his own face with some details added on. Obviously they had to change the body quite a bit, but it's interesting just how much of the more detailed parts of that character were all natural.

      how would it have been difficult to put house elves into the films? They completely exploded every single bit of action that was in the books to turn it into a fully fledged action scene and then some (and don't even talk to me about burning the Burrow down in part six) but including house elves (along with Hermione's plot, which in the book was critical to her character development) was too "difficult to render"?!

    • @splash._
      @splash._ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Casutama The burrrow burning scene was added in the movie to create tension. S.P.E.W contributes nothing to the plot, theme or the movie at all other than development for Hermionie when there are far more important stuff. The movies have 2 hours to tell the story, while the books have 500+ pages. The movie has to please it's audience in the limited time while also successfully conveying the main plot.
      Anyway, CGI costs tons of money and is inconvenient.

      The burrow burning scene is weird, though in my opinion the entire 6th movie is just very oddly structured. On the romance side though I think a lot of people underestimate just how much book 6 is basically just a pausing of the main plot and refocusing on teenage/school issues which naturally involved a fair amount of dating angst. The 6th movie maybe overdoes the romance slightly, but its at least the one piece of the series that should have any real focus on the issue.

      Mind you, one thing that the sixth film changed that I think was actually an improvement was the way Dumbledore told Harry about how Slughorn would want to 'collect' him. In the book he told him that as a sort of warning, whereas in the film he wanted Harry to let him, which given that he would eventually want him to get the memory from Slughorn makes a lot more sense!

Like seriously so many people have watched the movies but can’t tell me who the Marauders were and considering they’re my favourite part of the series, it’s kind of upsetting. So yeah marauders series all the way!! But if we can’t have that, at least include the Marauders scenes from Harry Potter:
      - explanation of who the marauders actually were
      - including the Snape calls Lily a ‘m*******’ scene where James stands up for her so people don’t think he’s an arsehole
      - sirius coming to check on Harry in the 3rd task and the trio meeting up with Sirius in hogsmead
      - lupin and Sirius talking to Harry about his dad

    But you bring up what IMO, is an even more important question: How is it that elves are essentially enslaved by wizards, even though they're more powerful than wizards in many ways - and without any training?
    The only answer I can think of - and it's pretty contrived - is that there's something inherent to the nature of elves that makes them have to obey wizard masters (until given clothing).

    • @Sentariana
      @Sentariana 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I read a story where the house elves feed on the magic of the wizards for survival, without it they die. So, the elves and wizards have a magically binding contract that the elves work for them in exchange for some of their family or organisation's magic, unless the elves are given clothes to be 'freed' from this contract - which would actually slowly kill the elf unless they found a new owner like Dobby started working for Hogwarts. Interesting theory.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That seems to be the standard fanfiction explanation for it. Where its really intended to be a symbiotic type of bond that just gets perverted by bad wizards. Though to be fair that's basically what we see in canon anyways where the only truly abused elves we see are kreacher and dobby, and given their owners are wizards like the malfoys and blacks who think murdering and torturing "mudbloods" is acceptable it seems likely they would treat any servant like that enslaved or no.

    Yeah the cutting out of the house elves bugs me too, but the gilyweed being given by Neville instead of Dobby does not actually bother me. First off, Crouch Jr. intended Neville to be the one who gave Harry the gillyweed because he gave Neville a book on aquatic plants. It just never worked out and he ended up having to stage an argument with Dobby in earshot in order to have him get the gilyweed, which I always found a bit of a stretch anyway since how would Dobby know where to get it? And after the events of the 2nd book, why would Harry have trusted anything Dobby gave him? Neville really likes Herbology and he gets on well with Professor Sprout, so obtaining gilyweed would have been a lot easier for him. Plus, the moment where he thinks he killed Harry is great. This is one of the few movie changes I actually approve of.

    Why didn’t Voldemort just have an army of suicide-bomber house elves attack Hogwarts, killing everyone inside, winning the Battle if Hogwarts before it starts.
    Also, an underused and overpowered spell in the books and films is OBLIVIATE! Like, who needs to find horcruxes when you can just erase Voldemort’s memory and make him forget about everything?

      All the harry/hermione shippers loved it of course. Personally I found it an entirely unnecessary bit of bloated run time from splitting the movie in two. It even could have played just fine if they had just made more obviously a dance between 2 close friends (or even pseudo brother/sister) comforting each other rather than pointlessly teasing a romantic connection which simply doesn't exist in the books.

      Yes. Like a BBC miniseries! They did those for so many of the Austen novels (or other works of the period), and they are always really, really faithful to the source material. Often down to the specific lines.
      I propose a BBC miniseries with 7 seasons and at least 5 episodes per season (could change depending on the season). The only regrettable thing is that they can't cast Alan Rickman again.

    See this was one of my pet peeves when I watched the films, I totally understood the reasoning behind it in earlier movies, but when it came to Order of the Phoenix onwards there was not really any excuses for it. I mean at the very least just use the main elves, Dobby, Kreacher, and Winky. Plus the lack of Dobby throughout the movies kind of cheapens his death in Deathly Hallows, I've had people who only watched the films tell me they weren't too bothered by his death because he wasn't in it that much and it honestly makes me sad that people who haven't read the books probably don't know how much Dobby did for Harry.
    However one change I will defend is Neville finding the Room of Requirement simply because I remember watching something where one of the creative team or something said something along the lines of wanting to give Neville something significant to do given his connection to the prophecy, so that one i'm okay with. But then again i'm also still quite p***ed that Order of the Phoenix was so short, because of how much they cut from this book there was allot of stuff that appeared in later films that had no context or explanation E.g. The Mirror...And i will stop here because I am ranting. XD
    Overall I agree, they should've included Kreacher and Regulus backstory.

    • @Sentariana
      @Sentariana 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think you actually become them inherently, because Harry still needed glasses - otherwise he would have immediately noticed that things look strange and removed them before Malfoy ever said anything - remember you can't realy change a person's eyes because the eyes are the window to the soul. You just look like them physically on the outside.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually your not recalling that scene correctly or rather are remembering the movie scene not the book. Harry does immediately take his glasses off since he doesn't need them in the book. There actually are a number of scenes where people polyjuice into muggles that I can think of. The important one for this question is harry and hermione going to godric's hollow polyjuiced as muggles in book 7, where they both use magic while still transformed when fighting off nagini and escaping voledmort.

      I'm not against slash in general, but I have to say the huge number of fanfictions pairing harry with draco, snape, or even voldemort are just obnoxious. I mean the first two are constant antagonists throughout the series (even if snape is technically a good guy he clearly does not like harry) and the fact that the third is literally trying to kill him is basically the core point of the entire series.

    I agree that house elves should have been involved and that the movies greatly suffered from their exclusion, but honestly removing the romance would have also damaged the movies, the romances are humanizing to the characters and part of their development and remind us that really these are children and teens going through this extremely trying time and rising to the occasion. Also romances and relationships are important to show suffering when characters die and the cost of fighting this war against evil even though it must be done. They should have made the films longer or split more of them in 2 parts to be honest.

  • @blkhartdragon64
    @blkhartdragon64 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    They didn't put them in because they were more interested in the path that Harry was going in, and it would take away time and money for more of the boring parts like the dancing scenes. They cut way to much of a lot of things like mad eye moody and were Tom goes back and kills his father and puts a spell on his uncle. Plus house elves and other creatures make cuter scenes and again takes away from the human characters. Will I forgive them for leaving out the house elves h*'ll NO or the gnomes h*'ll NO. I had been looking forward to all those things. It was stupid how they left them out especially dobby. We last see him in the second movie and then never again until the last movie. They needed him and the others for the story lines in all the other movies. It's stupid to think ok we see him in last of the second movie when harry frees him and never again until the last movie that all of a sudden he just happens to be around aberforth and he knows this strange elf is a friends with harry and he can send him there to help. No way. We needed all the back storyline in the movies like they were in the books to make it believable that he could be around where someone could send him to harry. I hope the house elves get shown properly when they are remade. It's been 20 years since the 1st movie I am surprised they haven't started remakes already, especially since they are still so popular, could you imagine the money they could rake in

      And this video I think gives a pretty good explanation as to why the house elves didn't play more of a role in the films. If they were so difficult to animate and weren't really that crucial to the plot then you can't really blame the film makers for cutting them out!

    • @vickylovera88
      @vickylovera88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it is doable even with work laws that affect children in the UK... and no, I can do an SF makeup like that with my team in around 3h per person and the labour laws say its 7 most if I can remember correctly.
      Also, I never said a full makeup. It's hard working with children with makeup. they fidget too much. It's half a makeup and then the rest done through computer. It's like half the cost and time than CGI and it looks even more realistic because you have an actor there and animating stuff like the light moving or the wrinkles is just a walk in the park because you have something to base it upon.
      They just wanted to do whatever they wanted and work less in my opinion, bcause like this there are tons of other possibilities and if I can do them in a third-world country like Venezuela and while just being in school so meaning basically NO BUDGET, I think WB UK can do something for the HP franchise.

    • @nbriggs133
      @nbriggs133 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's an issue however that even with a blend of methods it is still a long and complex (read expensive) task to do that sort of work. Especially given at that point in time there was very little precedent for that way of doing things. They get away with the small actor with makeup approach with the goblins largely because they have extremely limited screen time and are mostly static objects not interacting with their environment or even displaying full motion. Compare that to house elves which are much more "animated" in their actions constantly moving around and interacting with things and characters around them and the level of detail, and therefore work required, is far higher.
      So all that isn't to say they couldn't have done it, merely that there are legitimate reasons it is a difficult process no matter how you really approach it. Unfortunately, the house elf appearances outside of book 2 and 7 just aren't really critical to the major plot so its an easy spot for them cut content, saving both valuable time for other bits of the story and saving resources.
