Every vampire was once a mortal; every mortal has a past. Jasper and Hester share an introspective encounter when the Nosferatu seeks answers that Blood Magic might answer.

Jasper’s inferiority complex when objectively he’s the most versatile and dangerous main character in the chronicle is …. I mean, I feel for him. His pain is real. But his power is real too.

He proved it before, but I like how this scene emphasises Jasper's less flashy attributes; he's an absolute beast in combat, as he proved during the gargoyle fight, he knows how to do clandestine work, but despite how Nosferatu look and what would mortals expect from them, he's in touch with his humanity. And that's good. A great character played by a great actor ^_^
Poor Lydia, she just wants to be in her favourite magazine and I really hope she somehow achieves that at some point 😅

Me too! I haven't seen S5 yet, but I'd be happy if Jas got in contact with Nelli and got her a deal.
Everyone thinks about Jasper's strength, but it is his softness that does his best work and reveals many secrets. When dealing with one so sympathetic and sympathizing, people naturally open up to him. In this way he winds himself through the stories and among the people... collecting, collecting, collecting.
After hearing of his occasional outbursts of force and heroism -- always to defend, to protect his people -- they meet this self-effacing and curious man, and they find him worthy of their secrets. It's like judo, the inevitable rebalancing of his hand, and by such subtle leanings he draws them into confidence.
Given a little time to work this innate magic, this flowing back and forth, he would become a master among his clan in dealing with all others. It is easier to guide the game when you already know which cards everyone is holding.
I really like your writing style.
The ironic thing is that the moment he learned he had this affect on people and tried to use it, the moment it would no longer work
It’s the sincerity of his requests and the lack of knowledge about what he’s doing that makes people trust him
The thing about Jasper that is so very tragic is that because he doesn't think of Kindred as people, he also doesn't think of himself as one. I thought it was just self-hatred, but it's not, he sees the coterie he's in becoming important people, but he's constantly throwing himself in harms way to save them or attack their enemies, and when he gets his biggest priority here is to be a better weapon.
Question: How the hell does Jason Carl manage to do 24985 NPCs without going mad and giving them all somewhat intresting characters. DAMN HES GOOD.

Late reply, while Jason does do a tremendous amount of work, as all DMs and Storytellers will admit, not all npcs are created equal, for sanity's sake. Sometimes you can make a vague outline of a character from a handful of words, even a simple one word concept.
You could, in theory, have a recurring shallow character that is simply "tired." Tired of what? How do they express their exasperation? Are they grouchy, or just quick to be done with conversation so they can rest?
This becomes apparent when he roleplays as people that the players feed from, often he reaches behind the bar and pulls back "hot and dumb," and it works like a charm. Vampires love eye candy, after all. Especially when they're ready and willing to be given the kiss.

My dad had a charecter that used fortitude to literally facetank a fireball from a mage and everyone including the mage just stood there like wtf how are you fine?

Something like that happened to my character.. Someone surrounded my character by fire and only way out was going through..
Flesh of Marble can do that at Fortitude 5.. From a roleplay perspective it left some nasty wounds, but from actual damage is relatively minimal compared to what should have happened otherwise
Victor could and should teach him
Of everyone in the coterie, Jasper is the most in need of a dad. 😂
He should totally be taking advantage of Victor’s friendship. I get all the reasons why he doesn’t, but, frankly, Victor has been of more use to Jasper, personally, than any other member of the coterie, and he would totally teach him Resilience, and give him a drink once in a while. I mean it would really solve a lot of Jasper’s problems if he would just trust Victor a little more.
I'm not sure if WoD/Jason planned this (or how many of the #Vamily knew this) but I find it absolutely amazing that Hester is helping Jasper with X - a Malkavian, because Juliet played Drusilla in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" who could have been considered a Malkavian herself, since in the series she was driven insane by Angel and then Embraced.

Jasper really misses Eva and you could feel it. Gigantic thumbs up to Alexander Ward for his amazing performance here.
What i take away is this; Jasper described his love and interest in magic in a fantastic way, in life, death and then unlife again. Eva comes along, and Eva is just absolutely everything Jasper loves and cares about. I dare say Eva *is* The 'Magic' Jasper has been looking for all along. Now that Eva is away, and Jasper is in that very dark place of uncertainty. (Especially given the memory X The Malkavian shared with Jasper.)
Jasper is taking up his interest in magic in this second wind not only for his mere interest in it alone, or for a better offensive ability. But, to try and connect with Eva even further in her absence... He really misses her. And, Hopefully, for when she returns, an even stronger ability to protect her.
To that i say, You go Jasper!

There is a cute little parallel between Lydia asking Jasper to get her into photo shoots for "Gorefest" and Jasper asking Hester for magical instruction. And both end with the supplicant saying "Here's my number if you want to call me."

What I love most about these Epilogues is they tend to be more intimate and Introspective, hearing Jasper open up about his fears in being party to the others is fascinating to watch, but sad, he views himself as an 'Object' to the people around him and hopes to learn magic to 'temper' himself to better serve his 'purpose' in the Coterie which makes for an interesting parallel between him and Eva, after she was so heartlessly treated and used, though quiet and subdued, she encourages self-reliance, self-worth, and being staunchly against all kinds of mental and emotional pressures against herself and others even being opposed to taking on her own Ghouls. I'm confused as to when this takes place concerning the previous Epilogue with X.
As for Hester, there's not much to say about her, I love Juliet Landau obviously, but aside from that she's just 'Cool Aunt Witch.' The Character needs more time in the show for me to dig into her personality.
And wowee, is it just me or is Lydia crushing on Jasper oh she's talks of a Boyfriend but she thrusts her sketchbook to Jasper with her number while bringing up the possibility of drinks, some think she's Inquisition which would make her fascination with Jasper unnerving, but I think Hestor and her Sisters did a very, supernaturally, adequate Background check.
As always #Vamily, stay clean, stay Inside, and tell your family and friends you love'em. ;)

@@pepethefrog6809 That's a way to see things, but when you got the capabilities to approach unseen and cleanly remove the head of your opponent in one strike you don't really need to tank more damage...
@@tofton1977Well, last time he was set on fire accidentally. So, you might not fuck up but the people around you could still fuck up, and whether you like it or not, you need to adapt. He also got captured by an even sneakier Lasombra and he got staked and he almost got a sun-kissed tan. So, you know, it's better to have a durable defense and not need it, than having none and then suddenly needing it.
One would think healing potions and other defense magic like warding a jacket would be better....

Jasper is my favorite character. He may be pretty outcast, but he feels like the most honest and sensible character on the show. He seems the most... Human out of all of the cast, as well. He is the underdog we all need. Power, position, prestige, permanence..... Yet, Jasper is always soaking up the damage. Also, his devotion to the character's look during a pandemic in the real world is a 5 star dedication in my books.
He's a good example of a well played lone wolf, one that fills that type without ruining the experiences for other players.

@@grey8288 I know, I know. He does play it great. I was just tryna designate him to a clan based on how good he plays the lonewolf type, if he was not a Nosferatu. LOL I'm considering Banu Haqim as well. Because he likes hiding himself and he's keen to learn sorcery too.
Someone needs to tell Lydia that if she has BackBlaze she could access her backed up data with another device instead of needing to go back to the shop every time she forgets her laptop. I can't believe the actors didn't pick up on the chance to give an in-game shout-out to their main sponsor.
I hope Jasper gets to learn more magic. He may not be a good guy he is really more a anti hero. But the reason I find myself rooting for him is because he is so considerate to the people he cares for. It is tragic that he had to die before he really started to care for others. Human Jasper did not seem like a nice person. But maybe this is who he was under that.
The problem is, this obsession might lead to damnation. He might end up owing favors to beings that are much more malignant than the Camarilla or Sabbat... He might become the thing he wants to protect humans from. Magic can be learned through safe means, but his readiness to "pay the price" before knowing what that price might be is reckless.
@@GuerillaBunny I agree that it is reckless. I don't necessarily agree that magic can be learned by safe means. Especially for a nosferotoo. But part of why he is willing to pay the price is because that is part of his mind set as morale. He may be able to learn some things from a new inexperienced kindred. But he may not want others to find out that happened and don't want them to suffer payback for teaching him. He wanted someone who understand what he plans to do and knows that may have consequences but will do so anyway. He is being reckless but he is still picking who is to be his confidante.
@@vincentfrick6880 A Nosferatu can learn magic from a Tremere, and it's no more inherently dangerous than it is to Nelli, as far as I know.
However... Desperate Kindred sometimes end up bargaining parts of their soul to demons, who are all too willing to teach. That is not just some debt; it is giving a string to a puppet master. I can remember at least 2 such characters in my past games. Maybe 3? They all ended up working against the group, and faced final death for it.
But I don't know if that is what's happening here. An Infernalist wouldn't warn a desperate Kindred. And Hester isn't young. That mirror? It's powered by a very high level Lasombra discipline, or equivalent. Think 6 or higher (the basic rules only go up to 5, for vampires that are at least 500 years old). I guess there are also other ways to create such an artifact, but either way, Hester is that powerful, or knows someone who is.
Another thing that actually worries me is the fact that the gate leads to a labyrinth. Now, it *may* be a Lasombra construct. Or it might be... The Labyrinth. And that would be no bueno. The Labyrinth, in the Vampire setting, is where the evil gods lie. They sleep, but they are so powerful that their *dreams* shape reality.
Or that's how it used to be in old World of Darkness. I have no idea how it is now.
And now that I think of it, a deal with a demon might explain all those changes in Kyoko as well. Damn. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

It's not easy to make *good* deals with demons. Really one-sided ones can be done pretty easily afaik.
We don't see Juliet enough, I hope we see more of her in the next season.

Great episode. Hester brings a kind of “old blood” knowledge and power to the scene. Jasper is as always fantastic. The two together is fantastic. Bravissimo.
Jasper should talk to Victor about getting Lydia a shoot with gorefest might actually find out some stuff bout her if people are going down the she's inquisition route
Jasper's deathwish stemed from his belief that he has little value to his coterie which is why he wanted to learn blood magics but he is more intrinsic than he thinks and I think hester has done her best as his impromptu therapist to show he has made such big changes in kindred society and do more in the future. Also I know everyone suspects Lydia might be inquisition but me thinks she has just got the hots for jasper

Jasper has a shocking amount of game for a Nosferatu. No fewer then three love interests! Four if you count flirty Aurora. Not bad for supposedly the most repulsive kind of kindred!

I love when my favorite actual Vampire Queen joins the cast as Hester. Juliette is so poised and so truely beautiful.
Jasper has been beaten down so many times, but he always survives. That is what makes him powerful. Most people, kindred or otherwise would give up and die by this point. Only someone strong of will and with a great inner strength could carry on.

16:17 the most terrifying sound a roleplayer can hear: the ST mysteriously rolling lots of dice.
Jasper is the Cainiest of Cainites. I love it! He dabbled in the occult and killed his friend out of envy, then he was disfigured by being turned into a Nosferatu so that he is visibly marked as an outsider wherever he goes. Further more he still values innocence, so he ostracizes himself more than his disfigurement does, and can only really make himself useful by being a murder machine-all while feeling guilty and self-hating about it. He could go to Victor and learn Fortitude or Annabelle to learn Celerity, but no; the way he thinks of making himself more defensively viable is to make other people go away. Jasper really is an amazing character for this kind of tale. And there is a bunch of The Phantom of the Opera in him to round it out. . . I mean a disfigured architect/magician who lives in a labyrinth underground. . . Throw in a little insanity and a love of music and you’d have novel-Erik right there
Ending the epilogue with that Bahari mention. Can't even imagine what's to come for Season 5!

No chance he'd just be plain dark though. He's the type of guy I want on my team. Vicious with the enemies and very protective of his friends.

Hey, I've been scouring the Internet looking for answers, and can't find anything. I was hoping someone here can help me out.
LA By Night uses a lot of Blood Sorcery powers that aren't in the V5 Core Rulebook, a lot of which are clearly powers that appeared in the exhaustive Thaumaturgy paths from previous editions of the game. Are these house-ruled into LA By Night, or do they appear in some of the rules supplements (e.g. the Cam or Anarch books)? Also, what are the rules regarding acquiring multiple Paths? Can it be done, as it was in previous editions, or are you limited to five Blood Sorcery Path powers ever?
I create house rules for these powers and rituals as they are needed. That's not to say that these rules might not appear in a future Vampire 5th Edition book one night, if that's what our community wants to see. My house ruling is that, yes, it is possible to acquire multiple paths.

Also, thank you very much for all of your hard work and dedication to Vampire over the years. I remember seeing your name in the author's credits of the third edition books. Vampire was my first-ever roleplaying game (started playing the MET edition back in 2001). It started me on an incredible journey that's led to some of the greatest friendships of my life. I've done things I never would have thought possible through roleplaying. It's given me a creative outlet, a means by which to socialize, and taught some amazing life lessons.
Also, thank you for your work as a Storyteller here on TH-cam. I await each episode with eagerness. The way you set the mood, the way you gently control the pacing of each scene, and the deep characterization you bring to each NPC is truly an inspiration. I'm expanding on a V5 one-shot I've run a couple of times during the pandemic, and I hope I can bring some of that energy to the table in my own way.
And yes, I would love to see more Thaum Paths published, though maybe not as many as there have been in the past. I agree with many fans when they say it got to the point where there were just too many out there. Maybe just a few key ones, like Lure of Flames, Movement of the Mind, and Elemental Mastery might work well. More rituals would definitely be awesome as well!
Idk if you're up to date, but there's already a thaumaturgy/alchemy v5 book in the making (by renegade).

So it's just occurred to me that Jasper potentially could have Awakened at some stage and if he did he likely would have become a lot worse a person than he already was.

I am also thinking that a Banu Haqim instructor might suit Jasper's temperament and intent better.
Banu Haqim are assassin mages after all. Which fits his style. LOL They'd be hard to find, and would be less likely to teach their arts though. Unless, he knew one and is in a good relationship with them for a long time.

The Banu Haqim are also much friendlier to the Camarilla in general and that would probably prove difficult

Now what Jasper really needs is Fortitude for all that damage he keeps taking! Sure, he could do with some other disciplines, but Fortitude seems like the best option once he has some time (and xp) to spend on something other than Thaumaturgy.

For those who don't know B Dave does a VERY Good Vampire game on Queue Times - he really fills in the lore of the Vampire world with all kinds of weird stuff. Dealing with Lasombre, Giovanni and Shadow Lords for a starter.

Big Shout out to Jason Carl for another lovely episode. However, seeing this episode, and thinking back, I would much like to ask a question, since I run a game of 5th edition myself. I noticed you have somehow homebrewed a nice set of rules to bring back the Path of Levinbolt for Thaumaturgy (now called Blood Sorcery). I am a little sad in 5th Ed, that blood magic has been essentially severely eviscerated compared to 3rd Ed, but I am somehow hoping that future books will expand on Blood Sorcery a little more. May I ask how you homebrewed the rules? Or should I try to wait until future suppliments come out? I have a Tremere player in my group who finds most of the current rituals in 5th Ed to be severely underpowered compared to 3rd Ed. Any suggestions from an experienced Storyteller such as yourself?
As far as I know the upcoming book about the blood gods will also have more rituals in them. I am homebrewing what used to be serpents for one of my players, she'll have to still 'buy' blood sorcery as a discipline (and at a higher price as she's Ministry) but she'll get a set of Haitian voudoun Spells from an old book that the Baron had her 'find'... 😈
I don't want to speak for the production crew on a comment that's over a year old, but I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of stuff they're writing for new books/errata gets slipped in to the L.A. By Night episodes as "teasers" for observant players.
How far in advanced do they record? With Corona and everything, has Season 5's release date been effected?
Oh,so Hester follows the Lilith Path.
In V5 its kinda outdated since all they got is Humanity Points, but the Tennants to rule them is still malleable. If she is following the Path of Lilith, makes sense all of her actions. She will help Jasper, but her morality is Sabbat like. Of course, I like it. Sabbat paths of Sin are what true Vampires should follow and not puppets trying to be humans.
She could also just have the Bahari loresheet. Not everything is a Path, and that particular option is right in the main core book
@@randomim42 To be honest I am not very familiar with the most obscure parts of the new system and I have since made that comment not looked again into the rulebooks so I am even worse than then, altought I want the new Sabbat rulebook whenever I can go order it or remmeber to do so in a proper moment...
was not sure where to write this (am at season 04 episode 03 atm), I have since season 2 of LA by night been trying to find character sheets for the players but been quite unsuccessful.... would be fun to see them and also how they evolved over time.
I am also curious in how much influence the players themself have in their character sheets.... I am sorry if this is a question already asked and answered but I don't want to read any comments since I don't want to spoil the story

I think magic would fit well with Jasper's personality :D shame he did not become Tremere :D funny thing is fro a Tremere Obfuscate is the ultimate "expansion" on skill set now for Nosferatu to learn magic sounds awesom too :D

Hester says she receives visions from/of her Dark Mother? I wonder if she refers to her enigmatic Sire as her Dark Mother, or if she's of The Bahari follows The Path of Lilith. Now I gotta look some stuff up and think back to all the other times Hester has been on the show.

This right here is one of the reasons I like the idea of rewatching Actual Plays, folks put a lot of thought and consideration into the PCs they make or the STPCs they take on. And many of those details can easily be overlooked the first time through.
