- In this video, Jay breaks down the groove from "Becoming" by Pantera. This tune featured extensive double bass dumming by Vinnie Paul and it can be heard on Pantera's seventh studio album "Far Beyond Driven" released in 1994.
Throughout this new lesson series, Vic Firth Artist Jay Fenichel will discuss a variety of popular subjects -- from fills and drum solos to techniques on how to practice smarter, not harder. Each lesson will expose you to concepts that will help develop your drumming skills, whether you're a beginner, intermediate or advanced level player.
Watch for new lessons each week with Jay!

Thank you Jay and Vic Firth for this lesson. I like how you broke it down using 16ths and 32nds without worrying about the triplet feel at the beginning. Until this breakdown, I never realized that I was so focused on the feel of the pattern that it kept me from actually figuring out the pattern.
The comment with the comparison between John Bonham and Vinnie Paul earned you my sub instantly. I have been making that comparison since Cowboys From Hell, and John Bonham is the reason I fell in love with the drums to begin with. Its nice to find someone that truly gets it! 🤘😝
You got that bass drum bit slightly wrong dude
You only need to remove the second bassdrum note as far as I think.
Yup... upon examining it. It does seem like Vinnie plays a single 8th note with his left foot on beat one... as apposed to what I wrote which was two 16th notes playing R L. Good ears everyone.
That’s what sets it up for a natural triplet feel with little effort
Vinnie leads with the left foot and de rght foot plays two notes triplet between in the sxteen notes
what an excellent drum lesson, well done vic firth! do many more of these! tool could be next
What song is he playing? I came here for Becoming by Pantera.
I don't think you have the sequence right. I believe Vinnie leads off with the left foot going:
| left | - | left | double right | left | right | left | double right | left | right | left | double right | left | - | pause | - |. Then the same sequence again. The left stays on the same tempo mixing in the right foot mith every other double and single stroke, starting with two singles with the left.
It seems you have excessive left before double right and lack of right in the end, but I am not drummer...
I don't believe so. Shot a brief (and shity) video to explain..

this is the first time that "becoming" got demystified for me. thx
When I listen to the song I don't hear the second sixteenth note. That's to say that the first three notes should be done on the right foot (a single and a double). Am I wrong? I absolutely can't hear that second sixteenth note on the original.
bryan macneil When I slowed the audio down from the album, I hear:
1... trip-a-let, 1, 2, trip-a-let, 1, 2, trip-a-let, 1
As opposed to what's shown here:
1, 2, trip-a-let, 1, 2, trip-a-let, 1, 2, trip-a-let, 1
The only difference is the first second single note (beat?) that shouldn't be there.
No man. You're absolutely right.
The first kick is an 8th note for sure
I remember reading an interview many years ago where Vinnie said he usually starts double bass with his left foot, which is atypical of most drummers. Maybe that is adding the note you are hearing? I've noticed in a couple of their songs, I start double bass either one note before or one after and I've wondered if that is because I start with my right foot.
@@levelheadsteve I can't start with my left foot. I hate it.
Look at Vinny P on the overhead cam session when he recorded for ddrum. He plays: [RLRRLRRLRRLRRLRRL] Repeating.
And end is the same beggining and just continuing. [RLRRLRRLRRLRRLRRL- CONTINUE
❤❤❤❤amazing!!
Loved the tutorial video. So well broken down :)
Excellent video, thanks!!
Great Great video!! Congrats
Not how Vinnie plays it! He rests on the “e”s and single stroke every note on pedals. I know, I’m that guy 🤷♂️
He also starts with his left foot.
L LRR LR LRR LR LRR L
Im no drummer, but im pretty sure the bass line is off
Bpm original?
RIP VINNIE PAUL THE BRICK WALL.
Hey Jay, I'm curious to know what software component you're running?
yes what is the software program you are using to write the music notation on the screen.
Hell, when I play it I just let it rip and hope it sounds ok 🤠
Oh my god! 🤦♂By slowering down the track I can clearly ear that the real bass drum pattern is:
8th note, 16th note triplet, 2 straight 16th notes, 16th note triplet, 2 straight 16th notes, 16th note triplet. With sometimes a triplet replaced by 2 straight 16th notes.
good lesson, Id like to see a behemoth song lesson, its the only band i can´t play on drums
The only band huh?
Ahm yeah the only band i cant play from the list of bands that i know, which is not short.
Maybe even some songs from cerebral bore are also hard???
ulcerate? really?
necrophagist´s drummer live is not that awesome.
nile-george kollias thats one i forgot...now he is one impressive drummer....
you should check out cerebral bore.....that drummer is also good
***** ulcerates drummer is so unique. Love it
***** its definitely some of the most creative drumming in death metal. Lucass10 (TH-cam name) of Gnida has some pretty creative licks as well
It s not like that, it s 16th triple notes
Couldn't hear your bass drums properly on the opening demo.
MASTER!!!!!!!! EXCELENT VIDEO!!!
Друг, в большинстве партитур на эту композицию идут триоли, шестнадцатые триоли, а не 32.
16 triplets, not 32 . 1 2 3= RR L
Yes man, this lesson is not correct, because the second sixteenth note should not be there. That is an eighth note, and that is really change the balance of the whole grove! Before you work on lessons should listen the song!
This is it : th-cam.com/video/xhFIG6VtWgQ/w-d-xo.html played by the creator
the slower version is more okay haha
This is not the correct pattern but nice try
Correct pattern, just not executed with the same swing accents. Just needed to rest on the 2 of the first bar.
this is wrong very wrong dont
im sorry, but the footwork is completely incorrect here
под такие прописанные тупые как пробка бэктреки опасно играть - грув Винса будет недостижим никогда.
Dude, this notation is VERY confusing - even with the legend on top left, still hard to try to follow
But great video!!! Congrats!!!
Correct my self. It is [R-RRLRRLRRLRRLRRL]
i dont like toe-heel, as it has no power compared to heel toe
Its off. Start with the left, L LRLRRLRLRRL L LRLRRLRLRRL. That'll make it sound correct.
this is wrong very wrong dont listen to this guy
the way you are playing it is missing the vinnie swagger. this is something you would have to play until it felt right. breaking it down with theory isn't a bad thing, but it is the wrong approach.
Not really. Nobody is going to play the groove with "that vinnie swagger" without first actually knowing the groove. This is literally breaking it down as simply as possible. The idea that actually learning where all the hits fall is "the wrong approach" honestly doesn't even make sense.
