Making super light, resolvable 25 TON forging press: full guide

- This is a whole process of making homemade, super light, resolvable 25 (up to 37) ton forging press.
each heavy part can be disassemble and moved by one person. The heaviest component is frame and it weight 100kg (220 lb.). Total weight of the press is less than 300kg (660 lb).

Yes its working!! Super cool press. Building it with just angle grinder and stick welder, thats some next level determination.

Really nice job! I need to get my crap together and finalize my design and start building. I have a huge I-beam I’m thinking of using, but the angle iron designs seem easier to get the guide right.
Thanks a lot! I beams give a little more rigidity, but if you're plan is to make something similar to Coal Iron works, the angle iron should be fine. I wanted to make something very (very) solid and powerful. The press is set to 25 ton of pressure (2300 PSI), but it can manage 37 ton (3600 PSI). In fact, for making damacus steel I don't need full power, but for the tool steel dedicated for hot cut or drift tools, 25 might be not enough. At the end overkill gives me flexibility :P. (I'm Aussie, so all the steel and fittings in cubits and ounces don't work here. That's all Yankee stuff. So I have to "convert" everything to Aussie equivalent, and then make adjustments for the size differences. Yay...)

Great job on this video! I appreciate the thought process of material choices mostly based on affordability. Also thank you for explaining your mistakes with visual aids! I know the temptation would be to skip over this making the video way shorter. But we learn from are mistakes, better if we learn from others mistakes! Thanks!
Thanks Matt! Yes, I've upload short version of the build but people still prefer this one. Press is dangerous machine with huge force, so I deeply believe hiding mistakes or not explaining some details is not ok if you make a tutorial video. People looking for the inspiration on TH-cam- if you want to get them one, make it good :).

Thank you Ozzy! There was a lot of problems and things that I had to change during the build (2 burned motors, the ram had to be changed, I spend much more time on parts that was 15mm thick (not 12), the pump at the beginning was too big- I didn't put this part to the video). Over all, I've spent much more time on this project I assumed, but I'm thrilled how the press works. Next build gonna be a HON San Mai :)!
I stay in touch with Karl and I'm trying to convinced him to back on YT. He is better tool designer than me and much more experienced blacksmith.

Thanks Adam! It took me a lot of time to collect all necessary parts, design the press and calculate the frame toughness and still it's got a few things I have to fix/change. But it's exactly what I need and more important is: I can disassemble it, pack to the Van (or small trailer) and move wherever I want! This is something none of forge press can! Hey Mark! Thanks Brother! I've been inspired by Karl (but I guess you already know that :) ), but I modify his construction quite a bit. Plan was to make each part light enough, to be moved by 2 man. At the end of the video you can see I can lift the frame which is the heaviest part.. and btw I'm small guy (130 lb). I think this is the most unusual feature in my press (as well as the possibility to load it on small track (or VAN) and move whenever you want:)! Thanks a lot for the support!

@@DBCraftWorld I noticed the same thing that Ed did. The hardware supporting the upper and lower dies is flexing under load and possibly some concern the press will fatigue to the point of failure. I hope not, it looks very well designed and built, yet there is the flex (or play) occurring with the upper/lower die fixtures that maybe could be improved upon. Not sure. Keep up the good work.
@@steve_____K307 Thanks Steve! Now I understand what Ed said- thanks a lot for explanation. Yes, I've noticed this flex on the video too, but there is nothing to worry about. It's normal cause steel is flexible. If the frame was cast iron, there would be no flex at all (this is why old heavy duty machines were cast iron). If you check KarlMetalworks video you will notice same thing (his press is almost double in force than mine). Thanks for the support Steve!
Hi how did you synchronise the cylinders? Did you have any issues with more power going to one or the other ?
I didn't have to. The hoses that goes from the control valve are same length. If you keep the symmetry (hoses, pipes and all hydraulic connectors have to be the same on each side), cylinders stay synchronize.

Those are not "I" beams. That is wide flange

Are you refer to the press speed? Yes, at first I bought much bigger pump but I wasn't happy how the press works- I didn't have control. I can always change it to the bigger one so the press could work faster. Thanks a lot for kind words! Cheers David

2 rams looks like problems
2 silders/guides protect from torsion. It works fine, but I agree- one cylinder require less attention to construction details
That is not super light. You should see mine. I used it to split logs vertically. Then converted it to a press for blacksmithing.
The logs spliters are not design for the forging. Maybe they are light and easy to convert but they don't have enough strength to be effective. My press is set to 25ton, but it can go to 40Ton. It's 2-3 times lighter compared to industrial machines with the same pressure.

I know the difference, but yes- you are right: they are H beam not I beam. However not many people know H beam even exist. "I beam" is much more clear for most people.
