    Thank you for that lovely walk on the beach. I spent 20+ years on N FL beaches, I have never seen that many sand dollars at the same time. One of the things I find interesting the sand dollars in Australia are tiny, they have so many shells that are bigger than here in Florida but not the sand dollars. I am glad you are starting to appreciate tinys more because they are my favorites.

    @SWF Beach Life , I've been on Sanibel since Nov.11th but heading out tomorrow, the 19th. I've had a ball and found so many amazing shells. My friend found 2 huge conch shells. We traveled to Fort Myers Sunday and was saddened by the devastation. I have been down a few times since Ian but seeing the debris and homes gone,its just so empty and vacant. Ill be back in March and will be staying on Fort Myers beach. Until then ill deal with my shelling withdrawls by watching you. Thank you for teaching me so much about shells/ shelling.

    I know what you mean about the brightness. I was down on Honeymoon island in late February and the sun is so bright that your pupils are closed so tightly that it is hard to see certain details. But I also noticed that colors were amazingly vibrant. And yes I picked up as many shiva shells as I could find and I actually went swimming in the freezing gulf. 😀

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      YES!!!! Ok, that makes sense that it was so bright it's hard to see. Thank you for confirming I'm not completely bananas! The shiva shells were so fun! I picked up so many! I know that beach is still closed right now due to hurricane Milton. I hope it opens up again so we can all enjoy it again! You are way more warm blooded than me - there is no way I'd be swimming in February! 🥶

    I have a slightly irrelevant question. I have spent countless hours shelling on Sanibel and I'm dreaming on finding a crown conch but never have. Is there a beach you could recommend that I would have a better chance of finding this magnificent shell?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Bunche Beach. I know Sanibel has them near a bay....but I don't know exactly where that is. Bunche Beach always has the live ones, and I mange to normally find an empty shell. BUT....I went looking for crown conchs at Lovers Key and didn't find any. I am curious if the critters are back at Bunche yet.

    Not only that, but we had to wake hours before dawn to get to the beach to find our own teeny little sand dollars! In WINTER!
    Ah, the good old, bad old days! So glad you have it easier now, my Beach Angel! Do wish you'd stop wandering around in the dark, though!

    Dear Sharmon,
    Oh my goodness, I've never seen so many sand dollars at one beach!
    This is insane!
    It makes you wonder if the hurricane slammed them all on the beach. And there are so many deceased ones.
    I really hope the other shell collectors only took them, and not the live ones. Hopefully, they know the difference.
    It has been months since you've found sea urchins. They must have had a really hard time after hurricane Ian. Hopefully, you will see more alive little ones.
    That first hermit crab was hilarious. His shell was way too big for him. 😂 And the other one was quite feisty.
    They are cute!😍

    Great shell finds.🐚🦀
    Do you have a recommendation (aside from acid) to take off the green/brown alge (?) that is on some of my fighting conchs I recently found after the hurricanes? I used water & bleach and that did not get the build up off. thx

      Bleach and acid are the only 2 chemicals I've found that are effective at cleaning shells. If you have used bleach water and the build up didn't come off, it's likely not coming off. You can try 100% straight bleach and see if that helps but that's all I got.

    Wondering why the release timing changed…
    We were used to the 6p central release and now it’s in the middle of the nfl game schedule.
    Do what you need to continue doing what you do, but curious about why it changed.

      I might be able to grab a few more viewers at the new time. I figure as long as I'm not putting it out any later, people can still watch at the time they were watching it, and if anyone wants it sooner it's there!

    Happy shelling, everybody! I need your help with this one. While snorkeling on Bowman’s Beach a few days ago (November 14th, Sanibel Island, extremely poor visibility), I found a Brown Tibia (Tibia insulaechorab) shell. Yep, the one that is native to the western Indian Ocean. Perfect condition, shiny and glossy, just perfect. The problem? It doesn’t belong here. Is this a prank? Did someone purchase it from a shell shop (She Sells Sea Shells is my favorite) and threw it in the ocean? (that’s my theory, anyway). Any thoughts?

      That is what we call a "wedding shell." It happens to the best of us! People throw parties, weddings, celebrations of some sort on the beach and use seashells as decorations. Those decorations can get left behind and the next thing you know, a sheller finds it! It's happened to me with a really cool turrid. Enjoy that cool shell that you didn't have to buy in a gift shop 😂

    Where you picked up the sea urchin, the black thing right by it before you picked it up, looked like a fossil horse tooth. I was hoping you would have picked it up. Sure looked like one, but I could be wrong, could have been a piece of dark wood. I've found lots of fossils on the beaches.

      I see exactly what you mean! I've seen a few Paleo Chris episodes and at a quick glance it does look like a horse tooth but it was just a piece of wood. I have only found a few fossil shells so far!

    I think the name of the shell is intended to be “rose petal” tellin, describing the shape and not the color.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      There is a family of shells called tellins which they belong to - hard to say how they got the name "rose petal" but maybe!

    During the Red Tide in 2018 there were so many dead Sand Dollars on Sanibel it was terrible! I actually cried! I made videos of them, fish, turtles, etc. Broke my heart! ❤❤

      @@jojoa0808I know! It sounded like barking walruses 😂 on the beach every day for 2 weeks while there. A lot of elderly tourists couldn't come out on the beach because of respiratory diseases. I didn't get in the water much because of all the dead fish and shells. We even saw a huge sea turtle being hauled off the beach. So sad😢

      @ Luckily we didn’t see a bunch of dead fish or hubby wouldn’t have wanted to ever come back. We’ve been there every year since except this last year when we took our youngest daughter and her two teens to Navarre Beach which was in driving distance from where we live in Texas.

    Why are they such small ones that are dead,what makes them die so early? Also you never see any dead sea stars but you always find them in the stores?? Do you happen to know?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  6 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I'm not sure what killed them. They could have been pushed too far up the beach in a storm and couldn't get back in the water. And strangely our sea stars don't dry up like the ones you find in the gift shops. I never see any dead ones either!
