Omi (Krista Stadler) tells the story of how she came to lose her family to Krampus.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
After losing his faith in Christmas and tearing apart his letter to Santa, a young boy (Emjay Anthony) accidentally summons the malevolent holiday demon Krampus. The following day, his family awaken to find that a massive blizzard has knocked out the power in their house, and they are soon forced to fight for survival as the fearsome folklore creature and his minions proceed to wreak havoc on the dysfunctional clan. Adam Scott, Toni Collette, and David Koechner co-star in this hybrid of black comedy and horror from director Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r Treat).

He wasn’t just punishing the parents, he was punishing Omi as well, because she too lost the christmas spirit. He just up and orphaned a little girl because of a wish made in anger and hurt. The lesson is to be careful what you wish for, and to never lose hope, lest you want to face the consequences.
"Your lucky you're soul hasn't been completely corrupted child. I may be a Demon, but I am no savage. And so, I shall spare you.... "

It really was, like he knew she was the one who held onto her faith the longest, and showed her mercy because she was only a child that was being raised by cruel parents, having only lost her faith because of all the pain she went through.
After all, there must always be fair mercy, or else the person who judges just becomes another executioner.

I love how this film and the story is a testament to the power of hope. It just takes one child giving up for it all to come crashing down. That’s a message we could all do with right now!

He winked at her. HE WINKED AT HER. She wasn't naughty, she was reasonably hopeless. Her parents tore her Santa doll apart, her neighbors stole her bread, and she reasonably felt hateful to her family and neighbors for their cruelty.
So he just winked at her and gave her his bell, as a message to say "Hey, during Christmas, stay happy, mmk?"

Imagine if the whole movie was like this style, yet the monsters were still terrifying clay-figures. Tbh i think that would make a much better horror themed Christmas movie, since it can take what the old holiday clay/animated movies had, but create a much more compelling holiday horror.

I love how this movie has a stop-motion flashback instead of a live-action flashback.
This scene cemented for me that this was not just a funny-scary horror-comedy but a true Christmas classic-in-the-making that I would make a tradition of viewing every Christmas season from then on.

1:30 -1:38 "And that night, in the darkness of a howling blizzard, I got my wish." 😥 that part always makes me sad because usually children wish for happy, positive things but she wished for her parents to go away, not actually expecting it to happen. So sad.
In Soviet Russia families often had to kill and eat their children when the weather deprived the production of crops.
My grandmother witnessed this with the neighboring family, she said they "lost their humanity and became animals", which is what happens when one is confronted with a difficult situation; our primitive instincts kick in and we become apes.
The neighbors ate their youngest child and hid it, so that others will not take their "food". Their dog and cat faced the same fate. They were kind people, but the hard wired desire for self preservation ruled out ethics and morality, under such demonic circumstances.
This was all done under Stalin's rule.
This angers me for two reasons:
1) The young are not taught of the hell that Stalin brought upon the Russians, only the monstrosities that Hitler initiated. Whilst Hitler's intention was far worse, the living hell which the Russians faced deserves to have light shone upon it
2) The young also complain about their life, even with a loving family, good education, a full stomach and electronic devices that make the "boredom" go away. This is just disgusting. They have no idea of the monstrosities their recent or living ancestors had to go through.
Anyway, I just had to clear that out of my system.
Have a good life, for one day you will lose it.

American history books DO rightly lambast Hitler as the world's most evil man to ever exist, and American history books DO tend to overlook the horrors and the mass genocide of Stalin's Russian regime. I might add: Russia has changed MIGHTILY since the end of the Cold War. Now, there is ZERO religious persecution or ethnic cleansing in Russia, and Putin's Russia is far more tolerant than modern day China. Russia nowadays looks more like Russia did under the Czars -- there's still a lot of poverty, and a poor economy, but the pure evil and the repression of the people that existed during the Soviet era is long gone. There is more freedom, and capitalism in Russia now. My best wishes to the Russian people! They've suffered enough.

It's not well known but before Stalin*spitstotheside* died, he was preparing to carry out his own holocaust against the Jews alongside a second Great Purge.
All of this should equate to being the evidence that Stalin was more evil than Hitler.
byron brooks Stalin was a perpetrator of pure evil, and he was a pure defiler of humanity. The American left rails against Hitler, and rightly so. Yet they often forget to speak out about the horrors and vile actions committed by Stalin as he ushered Communism into Russia. Russia today is much more free, thank God. They have no religious persecution. They have much more capitalism. They are, in many ways, becoming the strongest nation in Europe because they are not AFRAID of their European identity unlike Germany or Spain. Russia is doing better. Let us hope for their best!

I love how this shows and not tells that this happened during the Great Depression or World War 2. People losing the spirit of Christmas because they are struggling with trying to provide for their family and survive, as well as losing loved ones from being killed from the war. Pretty thought provoking.
The animation is beautiful and the narration is beautiful! Awesome that Weta Workshop did the effects for the movie. (Weta Workshop is from New Zealand. Being a kiwi myself, this makes me very proud!) And did anyone notice that the Santa dolls smile turns into a frown when he get's ripped apart by the mum? Pretty cool detail!

I mean the family kinda got what they deserved they were jerks and basically made that girl summon the demon
Ella Freydman Christmas is all about compassion, generosity and community in the face of adversity. In the aftermath of a long, bitter war those people needed more than ever to come together and share what little they had in order to brave the winter. But instead they gave in to despair and fear, and allowed it to eat away at their hearts and turn them into cruel, selfish monsters.
Which is why at the end of the movie, when there's that zoom out of the snow globe that Max and his family is in, I interpret it as Krampus simply keeping an eye on them rather than trapping them in the snow globe for further torture. Because Max's family banded together and fought to protect each other's lives, something the people of Omi's village very likely failed to do when the attack came.
Tyler Brake that is true the entire town fought over everything and didn't appreciate the true meaning of Christmas. Even the parents were cruel and mean and comepletely destroyed their daughters spirit.
Also since there are a lot of other snow globes in the last scene Max's family might not be the only ones that Krampus simply decided to keep an eye on.

This movie reminds me of my uncle who a year ago destroyed our last Christmas family gathering with verbal abuse. He totally deserves a visit from Krampus. SMH
They were being jerks yes but you have to understand this was right after the end of the second world war and they were in Soviet occupied Austria they had more than a valid reason for that kind of behavior so honestly the murder at the hands of a Christmas demon in my opinion wasn't all that justified not saying the film is bad it's just kind of a weak reasoning in my opinion these people were starving Hitler only a few years prior had promised them the entire ire world would bow to them now they were hiding in their own homes fearing with their new Soviet overlords might do struggling to feed themselves let alone their children sorry about the grammar English is not my strong suit have a wonderful year

Now this HAS to be the second most awesome animation in a movie. The detail of the town (in the beginning you can see the snowman with the top hat) and how dark and sad it is. Even though we aren't there, when the dark snow storm clouds come in we can feel dread and despair come in. The way they introduce Krampus as a large, dark monstrous shadow with large horns and claws slowly moving to room to room makes it feel like a true threat. How you see his shadow and think "it's Santa clause!" But as you get closer you can see that it's something that's NOT Santa. Not a fat, happy man in a red coat and hat but a large, demonic beast wearing a costume almost as if lock-in Santa.
If you looks closely at the shadows at 2:30 you will see something flying. That must be the angel! That a cool little detail

But I still believed in Santa, in magic and miracles, and the hope that we could find joy again. But our village had given up on miracles, and on each other. They had forgotten the spirit of Christmas, the sacrifice of giving, and my family was no different. I tried to help them to believe again, but we were no longer the loving family I remembered. They too had given up, and eventually, so did I, and for the first time, I didn't wish for a miracle. I wished for them to go away, a wish I would come to regret. And that night, in the darkness of a howling blizzard... I got my wish. I knew Saint Nicholas was not coming this year. Instead, it was a much darker, more _ancient_ spirit. The shadow of Saint Nicholas. It was... *Krampus…* and as he had for thousands of years, Krampus came not to reward, but to *punish,* not to give, but to *take.* He, and his helpers. I could only listen as they dragged my family into the underworld, knowing that I would be next. But Krampus did not take me that night. *He left me, as a reminder of what happens when hope is lost, when belief is forgotten, and the Christmas spirit... **_dies._*
I like this cute backstory animation sure it looks like a tim burton scene but i think it's still cute....Dark but cute.
Also Krampus looks more symbolic as a shadow because he's the "Shadow of Saint Nicholas"

I think the silhouette makes it more Lotte Reiniger in a darker way, with the townspeople and Omi’s family’s being silhouetted as a representation of the darkness within their lost faith
Every time I hear of Humanity's need to exploit Christmas for riches, valuables, an excuse to party like jackasses and a desire to invalidate other holidays, I lose hope in the Spirit.
Every time I watch this movie, I am reminded that the Spirit could still be alive and not all Humanity is incapable of redemption.

This looks like it could be a sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas. Rise of the krampus. Jack Skellington has to help Santa and the other holiday leaders to stop the Krampus from ruining their holidays and taking away people's hope so he can control all of humanity through Despair and fear.

I can stomach a lot of things, but I can never watch this scene without a tear or two. I don’t know when I became a cynical adult, but being a child and having that innocence is sacred. I really hate to see children become cynical and lose their innocence. It doesn’t even make me angry anymore, just very very sad. It’s probably one of the most depressing things about growing up. Even if I was starving and I didn’t get food I couldn’t see myself being that cruel to a child.

Omi villiage was ambushed by the one enemy we fear to this day. Nazis. I also feel sorry for Omi her people attacked her when she was young and what makes it worse is her parents had no hope for God or for Christmas. Krampus came to punish the evil and ungodly mortals. He takes the unfortunate to the underworld as a punishment for losing hope on the most important holiday of the year.
Omi was Austrian and Austria was annexed by Naxi Germany without a gun being fired so i dought they were ambushed😂more or less welcomed
Omi was Austrian dude. Austria was on Germany's side, therefore they were not "Ambushed'' by anyone. Her village was suffering the aftermath of WW2 as you can see from the bombed out ruins of the village. Which was caused by the so called glorious allies. The real enemy was the allies,and in this particular case, themselves.
I have never lost my Christmas spirit because I loved seeing my loved ones on Christmas Eve that’s why I loved celebrating Christmas

God what I freaking treat this sequence was. It came right out of nowhere. I was not expecting a beautiful stop motion sequence in this movie at all!
To be fair Santa makes the naughty and nice lists so he knows full well that those on the naughty list will be taken by Krampus.
He left me as a reminder of what happens when hope is lost, when believe is forgotten, and the Christmas spirit dies
Another reason to not be naughty at Christmas:
I want a prequel about the grandmothers first encounter but I want it to be cartoon style like in the animations for the flashbacks. Think Tim burton nightmare before Christmas, coraline .
