People thought I was crazy when I would tell them there was a cable channel called Spotlight. I had the theme song stuck in my head for 40 years. Takes me back to a preteen age of innocence. When cable was made for adults only. And where kids would sneak into the living rooms to watch a movie that your parents wouldnt allow.
My older brother recorded the first "Friday the 13th" off Spotlight and I remember sneaking in and watching part of it from behind his chair. I would've been 11 at the time. My mom would've killed me!
omg i cant believe im seeing that opening crawl and theme. I remember this as a kid in the 80s and thought id never see or hear it again. God bless the internet!!!
Spotlight officially launched on May 28, 1981. It was initially available primarily on cable systems operated by Times-Mirror's Dimension Cable Television unit. On December 12, 1983, Times-Mirror announced that Spotlight would cease operations after 2½ years, and would sell the channel's subscriber base and rights to its transponder to Showtime-The Movie Channel, Inc. for an undisclosed price. Spotlight's network identifications and feature presentation bumpers throughout its existence utilized a big band-type theme, with a sequence featuring an animation that zoomed into the "O" of the Spotlight logo, accompanied by a whooshing sound.
I just want to know is Ben's mouldy PAL tapes have any recordings from the legendary Lifestyle Satellite Jukebox, though I think the recordings he's used so far are after Lifestyle's time. If he does have any LSJ, then I'll bet dollars to doughnuts he's got at least one recording _Hello_ by Twinkle... and could immedaitely work out why the video was requested so often...
I still remember the first year of Spotlight, hosted by Robert Goulet who explained the flip flop schedule of movies on Spotlight and I remember the first theme song. It was so cheesy. There is only one known footage of this period and always loved the sound as the O in Spotlight formed and then also zoomed into it... th-cam.com/video/1SiA1dF4Ukw/w-d-xo.html
This is seemingly the only copy of Pandora's Box on the internet. Not really sure what point (if any) Mr. Segal was trying to make with it, but it's fascinating none the less.
Spotlight ran on a limited number of Cable TV services from 1981-84. Subscribers were given a choice between Showtime or The Movie Channel after Spotlight shut down.
Had to do with Spotlights’ parent company selling their satellite transponder to Showtime/The Movie Channel Inc, making the channels available to cable systems where it wasn’t available before
I Think Spotlight Was Co-Owned By COX Cable, The Cable Company That Serves My Area, In Santa Barbara. After Spotlight Shut Down Operations In February 1984, We Opted For Showtime, Instead Of The Movie Channel Or Both. We Didn't Get Movie Until It Came To Our Area In 2001.
12:04-12:21/15:15-15:30 these "Spotlight Feature Movie" opens are rare, they're all live-action and realistic (in contrast to the animated opens of HBO, Cinemax, Showtime & The Movie Channel)
I Have Checked When The 1975 Film "Brother Can You Spare A Dime?" Ran On Spotlight At The Time And Seemed That They Only Hit The Dough On It A Couple Of Times Throughout January 1982. Later On I Did Check When The Cheap Unforgettable, Paramount Primary, Walt D****y Secondary, Flipped Up 1980 Film "Popeye"; Popeye Ran On Spotlight Starting On The Week Of Late January, And Continued All The Way To February. So My Best Guess Here Is That This Is Recorded On January 31st, 1982, Exactly 2 Years Before Spotlight Ends Its Cable Life.

the intros to their feature presentations are crazy good and funny
I remember it even coming with a TV guide. That was the day.
I remember that documentary "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?" it got me interested in modern American history.
My mom and dad had spotlight when I was a kid. Amazing in it's day.
That Pandora's Box short is one of the more unsettling things I've seen in a while. Dude was on something.
The Pandora's Box film looked like it would be something you'd find on a Discovision dead side
I remember this was on Cable Channel 12 in Palos Verdes California in the late 1970s and early 1980s.... later it was changed to Showtime 😊
Talk about nostalgia!
This is a last from my past. I was so young when this channel existed that I barely remember it.
I love how these channels played music videos.

I've gotta stop living in the past. But I'm addicted to all this great '80s stuff on YT.
my cousin had spotlight in summer 82, saw happy birthday to me there..

Those three RCA Records slides would look great on the CLG Wiki.
Is it bad of me to look forward to the "off season" for Oddity Archive for these Annex videos?
What was the song called that was used in the Spotlight ID? Does anyone know?
That "Pandora's Box" animation feels like something from a Pink Floyd music video
omg yes. for a while i thought i dreamt this channel lol
15:40 This Paramount logo has 22 stars.
why did Spotlight meet its demise, anyway?
The parent company that ran Spotlight sold its satellite transponders to Showtime & The Movie Channel.
Wow, with scary logos! 😂

1:10 SpongeBob music!
There was no Spongebob in 1982!
