      I find it a lot more helpful to look at the theory as descriptive rather than normative, meaning there aren't rules so much as there are descriptions of what generally works; this prevents me from getting trapped in rigid forms of thinking, while still finding the "rules" useful as guides.

      I truly wish I could get that through a friend's head.
      A really good guitarist once told him decades ago that he "just kind of lets it flow..".
      My friend took that to mean "I don't have to learn anything"
      Once in a while he's in key, but more often that not he just makes noise.
      Thinks it's all good.
      Wonders why nobody wants to play with him.

Over time you are becoming a boon to music / song writing by equipping me and others with more and more practical music tools and song analysis with both what is being played, and how it is played with your holistic understanding of production.
    You are a master of your craft, and I learned so much about chords, I actually learn so much about your videos. It infers you learn a lot too in the process of making these, I hope you continue to progress.

  • @PaulTheSkeptic
    @PaulTheSkeptic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    You can change keys for the chorus too. Or the bridge. That works sometimes. The Beatles do that a lot. Then there's learning how to solo over unusual chord progressions and that's fun. Shifting your mode to fit the key changes makes for some really interesting stuff.

    Although I study chords, I select final chords by the sound and how they highlight the melody, and the feel of the melody. And sometimes instead of just repeating the same chords for a repeated phrase, one simple tweak will give the melody a more emotional feel, especially for love songs. So in the end, it is the sound, the feel, the compliment to the melody and the lyrics. It take a lot of work.

    I think that the hardest part of songwriting is making a song that is able to be dynamic but just enough to keep casual listeners as well as musicians interested in your music. For example most of us listen to Dream theater for their brilliant songwriting and how dynamic the music is but a lot of people that are not music enthusiasts get overwhelmed by music that has many changes.
    I personally love when a song has many dimensions and doesn't stick to one riff or rythm.

    • @SignalsMusicStudio
      @SignalsMusicStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I agree 100%. Variety and contrast is what makes things interesting. I think the best music is the stuff that might seem simple on the outside, but is ridiculously complicated on the inside (stuff like my beatles / beach boys video). I did literally spend years thinking I couldn't make music though, just because I didn't know how to string diatonic chords together. A lot of musicians just wanna write 4 chord music, and thats fine- I just want to make it easier for them to do it!

    • @chromaticswing9199
      @chromaticswing9199 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I personally love it when a song sticks to one riff or rhythm! There are so many subtle differences that add dimension while preserving the central motif. It's also a great exercise in songwriting to limit yourself in that way, forcing other creative muscles to work.

    This was great! I took years of university music theory to get my bachelor's degree in performance, but it left me paralyzed, because I was a perfectionist. Knowing all the rules made me feel like I couldn't write more songs without doing it wrong. It made the idea of writing music NO FUN. Thank you for the encouragement and simple approach.

    Can I "Thumbs Up" this more than once... Jake, this was/is absolute GOLD to me!!! Understanding the fact of completing a progression on the 4 or 5 helps turn the progression back around...? Is that all??? That was literally one of the missing pieces I could never find or understand. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us! And when you added that G Progression to keys, it sounded excellent! And your delivery on this whole thing is just excellent!

    Thx Jake (Signals Music Studio.) For years I was stuck and going nowhere with my music development. With my limited talent, I've been fiddling on the guitar, synth piano and writing songs (that no one hears) for ever. There are many on youtube that provide help, but I could never wholy get it. I found your chanell and the heavens suddenly aligned. Soul destroying disappointment no more. Thx thx thx 😊😁

    I really like this video because it explains very simple, macro-level concepts about chord progressions. I've watched so much music theory videos on youtube and so many of them are too complex for me to use or just recap basic vocabulary (as opposed to teaching how to *use* that vocabulary). This video said nothing I haven't heard before but still opened my eyes. I had never thought of starting at the I and ending on the IV or V as being like, an essential blueprint so to speak for writing a chord progression, even though I knew the I was the most consonant chord and the IV and V resolved to the I. It put it together in a practically applicable way that I just haven't encountered in all my years casually flipping through this genre of video on the site.

    I've played guitar forn17 years and never proper theory or scales. I learned pentatonic and major scale and figured it out from there..I am going back now from the beginning to learn chord structure and try to have a better understanding of music. I wish I would've done it before now but thank you for your helpful videos. 🙏

    Hey man, I love the way you explain things and I have learned quite a bit from your channel. Do you think at some point in the future you could make a video outlining chord theory be it how all chords are constructed, how they relate to parent scales, and why they are called what they are? I've been looking for good videos to clear this up for me but I haven't been having much luck.
    You don't have to, It's just an idea that I'm sure would help out a lot of people :)

      Thanks for the nice words! I do outline part of that process in the 2nd half of my video on the Lydian scale... I do intend on making a video where I talk about figuring out the chords of ANY scale/mode, but I have so many video ideas, it's a battle for which one gets made first!
