- Día de Muertos is right around the corner, so I'm paying homage to this beautiful Mexican tradition by creating a La Catrina / sugar skull made out of Swarovski crystals and gems! I have to apologize - the Michael's website is TERRIBLE, so many of these I need to just describe for you. Overall, I spent less than $50 total.
1. The flowers for the crown were a seasonal Halloween item. Black lace flowers with silver trim. $2.99 each (5 flowers total). I just wired them to a black head band.
2. 2 packages of Silver/Dark Gray Swarovski Hot Fix crystals (18/package, 36 total). The size is 5mm and they are about $4 a pack.
3. 1 Package assorted clear Swarovski crystals. go.magik.ly/r/j...
4. The large gems were so inexpensive! Bead Landing assorted acrylic rhodium jewels $3.29 in store. go.magik.ly/r/j...
5. For the teeth, I used stick-on teardrop gems that were much thinner than the larger gems. They aren't listed on the site, but you can easily find them in store. Similar item: go.magik.ly/r/j...
6. The skeleton hand bracelet was a purchase from Spirit Halloween and it wasn't expensive at all.

This is the prettiest sugar skull I've seen.

I must say I am pretty impressed. Sugar Skull has been done so much that it doesn't really excite me. But this is such an imaginative take on it. And very avenge garde and very glamorous. White face paint is so harsh and feels so heavy on the skin. This is so much more beautiful. And so accessible. I wouldn't imagine the gems were from Michaels it looks far more expensive. Amazing work.!
+Mark Vela I was actually amazed I could find all that at Michael's as well! The large gems are really gorgeous and came in a mixed box for like $3 something. So glad you like the look - I feel the same about sugar skulls...it's so overdone! I wanted to share my enthusiasm for this amazing tradition and I'm glad it's received such a positive response!

Sooo beautiful! I really wanna try this, it's total gorgeous! Plus simple enough that even my shaky klutz hands might be able to pull it off. I always loved the sugar skull make-up but couldn't see myself able to do all the black and white painting it would take. Plus that much face paint would have just begged me to scratch at it and then ruin it. This looks WAY more comfy but still unique and glam! Thank you for sharing! You rock as always!

Originally called Calavera Garbancera, and baptized with the name "Catrina" is one of the most representative icons of Mexican culture.
Famous internationally for the Day of the Dead in Mexico, its origin dates back to the Porfiriato era, where the journalist Jose Guadalupe Posada, created it with the name of Calavera Garbancera, representing the catrines who were people of the upper social class who lived an utopia, imitating a way of life that resembled the European, which basically rejected everything that meant indigenous origin, these were represented as catrines in the newspapers of the time as criticizing the high society of the Porfirist Mexico, prior to the Revolution Mexican
Today, "La Catrina", adorned with beautiful hats and flowers, is a source of inspiration at many costume parties, both inside and outside of Mexico.
