Great idea! Thank you for showing us the details. I bought a house with a large yard, thinking that I was going to put in a huge in ground vegetable garden. Then I found out that back in the 1950’s and 1960’s my neighborhood had been surrounded by factories that produced tons carcinogenic chemicals and heavy metals that blanketed everything in the neighborhood. I knew that the original owners had died which was why I had gotten a good price on the house. What I later learned was that every house has at least one person with cancer. The EPA knew about the contamination but said nothing and let hundreds of people die. The city removed all of the fruit and nut trees but never told the people why. So basically everyone has been living in what should have been a superfund site. As I started to hear stories from the old timers in the area, I got suspicious and did some research online. Turns out my area has the worst overall cancer rates in the country. Now that I know about the contamination, I can’t sell the house without disclosing the information. So I am stuck with it. Since I am already old, and in poor health, I will take my chances, but I am definitely not going to grow food on poisoned soil.
So this is just what I need.
Have you considered using a superglue type thing that works on plastic, instead of the staples? Seems like it might be easier for putting on the netting. You had a good idea using tulle for the netting. Much less expensive than the bird netting that the nurseries sell.

That's horrible. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm thankful you found out before starting a ground vegetable garden. Be sure to check for food grade materials for whatever containers you use for your raised garden. I was not sure if a glue would hold up in the hot sun over time. I felt the staples would last longer which they have lasted a very long time. I've had the red totes for at least ten years now with no problems with the staples. The totes are finally beginning to fall apart which is another reason why I probably shouldn't try to move them anymore. The tulle has lasted better than I thought it would as well. I have not needed to replace the tulle until now due holes in a couple of the lids. This will be my first time replacing the tulle since I've had the totes so we'll see how that goes with the staples. Take care my Friend.

Another idea: Sew the tulle into the shape of a pillowcase and slip it over the lid. The double thickness will work even better to keep the bugs out.

    • @cariwaldick4898
      @cariwaldick4898 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@BeautifulHairProducts The heat tool is a soldering iron, and can be found in any hardware store. It's typically used to melt soft metals for wiring. I think you could also use a wood burner--which is very similar. That would be found in hardware stores as well, but also crafting stores. The wood burner comes with nibs, that can be changed. They're used for wood projects, like decorating wood with letters or designs.

Good morning Yolanda ❤ I am so glad you are using food grade safe totes for your garden! I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and we are in a winter weather advisory right now. it is currently 22 degrees and snowing. We are suppose to get 1-3 inches today and 3-5 inches tonight. But I'm all stocked up and cooking a turkey today to snack on so today I am going to do some TH-cam viewing! We just moved here almost 6 months ago and are looking forward to growing a big garden but it will be interesting due to hardy zone 4 and the deer that poop in our yard. I have been seeing a lot of people using totes for there gardens and the house we bought has at least a dozen food grade totes in it! Thank you for sharing!

Good morning! Wow that's cold! I saw the blizzard conditions for your area on the news this morning. I'm glad you're staying warm and well fed. I wonder if the previous dwellers used the totes to keep their plants away from the deer and the cold? Hmmmm Have fun planning your garden. I'm sure it will be amazing despite the cold and deer. Happy Gardening!

@@bestgardeninggoals It is actually not that cold we wonder if it is due to the humidity but aren't sure. It is still snowing but we have only got about an inch maybe so far. We are always well feed lol. I made homemade biscuits this money before I put the turkey in the oven. So we had breakfast biscuits with eggs cheese and sausage patties. Nice hot and fresh out of the oven! The two previous owners left a lot of things here! Including a 30 foot fifth wheel with the title on the counter and everything in it works as far as we can tell! As far as gardening goes it appears the only thing that may have been grown was indoors with some special lights. The property looks a bit neglected and we have to figure out where the most sun we be so making a tote garden makes more sense because it can be moved . Right now there are no leaves blocking the sun when it comes out so we have a while before we will know the best place to plant. We have purchased a greenhouse though. We just bought this house almost 6 months ago site unseen except for a video and pictures online. We paid $23,000 cash so we could remain debt free. It is a livable fixer upper!

They could be older than the ones in the channel they mentioned, but who knows for sure. The pictures of the red totes in my intro video are old photos I had taken when the red totes were new. Also, I did recognize in that introductory TH-cam video that I saw someone growing food in a tote on TH-cam, but I guess they didn't watch that video. LOL! I thought of a similar idea. I am digging the boxes into a compost pile that I made in a tractor tyre and am using it to start tree and vine seeds in Autumn (Australia, so Southern Hemisphere), for transplanting in early Spring. They are being started in damp sand, in forestry tubes, with about an inch of water in the bottom of the tote to maintain humidity.
I don't modify the actual tote at all, so if I want to use it for something else in the future, I can do that.
80 tubes will fit comfortably in a 55-litre tote and 2 totes will fit in an old rear-tractor tyre, with lots of room for compost.
As a bonus, in the Spring I also get some nice, well-aged compost to get them all started!
Also, I use the completely clear totes and leave the lid intact. I take the lid off once a day, check the tubes, then put it back on, and I do this at about Noon, when it's nice and warm.
I hope this idea helps someone out there. God Bless!

The soldering iron is a FABULOUS tool for so many outdoor projects!
Another great tool for removing the insert is a box cutter.
For the tulle, wouldn’t it be better to do it on the outside of the lid and staple over the rim of the lid? That way of something falls on it, it’s less likely to damage the tulle.
And mama, you need a small handsaw to cut those branches and such. It’ll be easier for you and allow you to cut more in shorter time. 💖
I think I might try this method for when I start my seedlings next year with more shallow containers. That way, they’ll be small enough to sit on heating mats and under grow lights but I’ll be able to plant more starters at a time in less space.
When I do my container gardening, I mix my own potting mix. It’s a blend of vermiculite, garden soil, coconut coir, peat moss, oyster shell calcium powder and lobster compost. This makes it nice and loamy and light while still giving it a lot of nutrients.

I guess my totes do look pink. I hadn't paid that any attention until you mentioned it. LOL! They were red when I purchased them years ago. I've been using them for years even though I just started making videos about my garden after retirement. My totes have become old and worn out with time. Several of them also have holes and need to be replaced that's what made me buy the new blue one and make a video of me doing it. I have hummingbirds that visit my backyard as well. They are so beautiful! I also have eight raised beds, about 12 grow bags, and I lost count of the number of 5-gallon buckets. LOL! Oh well, Happy Gardening!

We don't always have an ideal space to garden in so we have to find creative ways to do it. I tried to till my ground in my small space, but the bad, rocky, clay soil just bogged the tiller. I can't put ground level raised beds next to the fence because the fence does not belong to me and my neighbor uses weed killer. My only option was to use containers that I could keep off of the ground. So, I say all this to you to think outside the box, be creative and just try different things until you do something that actually works in your space. You've got this friend!
