A recent survey by the nonprofit Congressional Management Foundation found that a large majority of senior staffers believe the legislative body is no longer functioning. Conservative political commentator Charlie Sykes joins Michel Martin to discuss "The Great Resignation."

Great to see Charlie Sykes. As a Brit and long time fan of the USA, the main problem with the disintegration of the GOP under Trump and this cowardly Congress is what it may well mean which is the slow decline of American influence in the world and that will be a problem with domestic consequences for the US. Ukraine and Europe are already starting to adjust to the reality of an 'unreliable' America, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and the Phillipines too are likely to be weighing their options whilst wishing for better from the US. Obviously I don't have a vote but when I lived and worked in the US I would be a natural Republican and despite not being fond of the Democrats, I would certainly vote Biden this time.

Whilst I grew up with the America of JFK when the US was that Citadel on the Hill, I got rather fed up with Democrats who dipped their toes into the problems of Northern Ireland the main purpose of which was to ensure the Irish/American vote back home rather than help anybody there. He said in 2016, he saw a dramatic change in who would be at debates, who was organizing things - people he had never heard of or had no history in politics…the question he kept asking was ‘who are these people?’ Trump has brought out people who were never in politics before…and it shows..

A salient quote from the Christian Bale Exodus movie is that [sic] "The people best equipped to acquire power are least equipped to wield it (properly)." We as a people in the United States must look at our culture, because our culture impacts so much of our world, and seek a way to fix it. The solution to the radicalization and dysfunction in Congress is rank choice voting. In those states where it occurs, the winners of elections tend more towards the center and moderate positions in policy. Rank choice voting should be the law of the land, because it really works and it's one of those things the founders just didn't think of back when they were establishing our country. But, we know more now. The whole country needs to geek out on statistics and see the strength of rank choice voting. The concept should be taught in schools and it should be the way we do things.
    **********************

A little off topic, but no Congress person should be in office for 30, 40 or 50 years. It is unfortunate but the big problem with our elections is that we are lazy. Most people don't bother to vote and those that do just go for the name they know or look for the "D" or "R" behind the candidate's name. That's why people like Green and Gaetz, who are in solid red districts, won't be voted out any time soon. It's a shame, but until 'we the people' take our voting seriously, we will never have a serious legislative government.

There are millions of proud Americans with the ethical standards to work in Congress and I count myself in that number. If hired, I will gladly work in Congress as a Democrat or as an Independent.
The problem of the Republican Party is that the extreme views of Trump are not acceptable and people in the GOO are quitting out of desperation to deal with him. I have become a more compassionate understanding person but Trump just care about himself. He had all these legal claims and its' companies investigation for ages, way before he became president. He can not say this claims started now because it is not true. Only the election fraud in Fulton county were uncovered more recently, but the NY state investigation on his company has 5-6 years in the making. So he is not saying the truth or lying about the origins of these legal claims against him. The Egene Carroll case also happened many years ago. So these claims are not a witch hunt of the Democratic party.

They're speaking in code like this is a bipartisan issue, but it absolutely is not. It's 100% GOP reps, starting with Newt Gingrich, and now it's Matt Gaetz, MTG, etc. This is what happens when you elect to govt extremists who think government is the problem.
Also, don't forget that individual GOP members can fix this at any time. A single moderate GOP member could join the Democrats and they'd execute a moderate policy, passing bipartisan Senate bills with greater than 300 'yay' votes on each issue

Nice interview! Pertinent, succinct questions, & you allowed your guest to elaborate on the issues- especially with Mike Gallagher. Rep Gallagher *could* have matured into a substantive statesman. Instead, we are left with the Matt Gaetz & MTGs of the psychodrama that has overtaken our Congress! In addition, people as smart as Gallagher may believe that they can accomplish more (& make millions of $$s) in the private sector.

Why is compromise a bad word these days? I was brought up to work with people to come to a result all parties could be ok with. There was an understanding that no one would get everything they wanted but it would be a solution for all involved. Anyone who pouted and whined about it was looked down on or considered childish.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-because I was not a Jew.Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me.

    "It's hopeless."
    In a nutshell.
There are no people with the clout and spine to bring the GOP back to actual conservative principles: fiscal responsibility, pro-Constitution, pro-ally, pro-institutoon, family values... None of these are present in the far right. Just blind anger.
